Hi all,
Thought I'd start a thread on who you would like to see leading our club onfield next year....
Our current leadership group (not sure if the list is 100% accurate):
Watson (c)
Andrew Welsh (vc)
David hille
Fletcher
Brent Stanton
Nathan lovett Murray
Mark McVeigh
Im certain our leadership group will somewhat change given our performances this year.
What are peoples thoughts on this? Who would you like to see in our leadership group going forward and who would you demote from that group? My picks would be...
Watson (c) - obvious choice
Winderlich (vc) - His importance has grown exponentially this year. Our best outside player who breaks lines.
Howlett - Im taking a chance on this youngster as the next best mid we'll have next year behind Jobe.
Fletcher - General in defence
Hille - Bleeds for our club, gives 100% each and everytime he wears the jumper
Hurley - Its time we give this rising superstar some responsibility to burden on those mighty shoulders of his

This thread will be funny.
Stanton, Welsh, NLM and McVeigh will all be left out, and a large variety of kids, many of whom won't be in the 22, will appear.

Spot on, Welsh, NLM, McVeigh are obvious outs. Stants I was 50/50 on but I feel has gone backwards this year. Uninspiring display for the most part....

Jobe Watson (C)
David Hille (VC)
Don't care about the rest.
Gee, we don't have much talent here.
I would want Watson, Hille then some of the kids. None of the other mid-tier players deserve it.
Zaka, Hurley, Myers, Winders etc.

Captain : Watson
Vice Captain : Hille
Leadership Group (from) : Stanton, Davey, Monfries, Hocking, Pears/Hooker.
Stanton and Monfries are in our top 10 players, reasonably consistent and have been around long enough now. Davey for the indigineous group.
Not sold on either Pears or Hooker as leaders (they're both good time boys off the field) but if we need to develop a leader from our defensive group then these two are the best qualified.
Think leadership groups are a load of shite personally. Would be happy just to have Watson and Hille there.

We have leaders at the club?
I'd leave the leadership group as is (which is Watson, Welsh, Stanton, Fletcher, McVeigh and Hille. NLM isn't in it)
But as RIG said Hille should be our VC, he essentially is anyway, may as well make it official. If one of the players above left the group for whatever reason I'd put Winderlich in as it's a leadership group, not a rising star group.

I would like to see:
Captain: Watson
Vice Captain: Hille
Leadership Group: Fletcher, McVeigh, Hocking, Winderlich
If Monfries didn't frequently dive to get free kicks I would like to see him in there, but just don't think it's an example I would want to reward.
Not sure how Gumbleton is leadership wise but if he is any good I'd like him in there.
Hurley needs to show he is 100% over off field discretions for longer before I would consider him.

I like Winders but if he won't take the responsibility to have a shot for goal from 40m out then he should not be in the leadership group.

It's for that reason that I want him in the leadership group. A gamble, but I think it might force him to take more responsibility and make that next step.

is fletcher in it this year?
i didnt think he was, although maybe he had a few years off but they convinced him to come back in this year?
Obviously Jobe can be captain as long as he wants it,
Welsh shouldnt be best 22 let alone VC so that can goto Hille,
i really hope they put Paddy in it, even though many may not think he is leadership material, making him a leader might really bring some toughness and grunt to his game..

Whatever the case is, McVeigh can't be in the leadership group.
In fact, the timing of his contract was baffling, any new coach that came along would have no doubt shown him the door. You can cry til the cows come home that he did a great job as a lock down small defender but he's not going to be in the plans of the next coach - simple as that.
Watson- C
Hille- VC
Fletcher
Ryder
Hurley
Monfries
Gumbleton
Winderlich
Big list I know but Hurley and Gumbleton are young players who should be in our leadership group although normally their inclusions would be premature. They are going to lead us into the future so why not start them now?

However I would like to see an extension to our leadership group to include a young leader and my choice would be:
Young leader - Zaharakis.

Hmm my ideal would look like this:
The two obvious:
Watson - Captain
Hille - Vice Captain
Fletcher - He's the backline general and it just makes sense really, he also makes up about 1/5th of the teams total experience (im too lazy to check exact figures so im guessing)!
Monfries - Ok well he's about 24ish now and is the most experienced person in our forward line, i think the onus is on him to stand up now and provide leadership in that area of the ground.
Ryder - He's probably not a natural leader, but i think Essendon should be doing everything possible to give him a bit of a 'push' when it comes to his career. A naturally shy person who tends to stay in the background a bit, i reckon a role in the leadership would be good for him and the team. He seems to be doing more media work as it is and was the face of our campaign in 2010.
Zaharakis - My first true youngster, he will now be in his 3rd year and i think he's met all expectations so far and just seems to be really flourishing. At this very early stage he would be my pick of the youngsters for next captain after Watson (admittedly its a very premature call as Watson will be captain for years yet).
I consciously chose not to include NLM, Mcveigh and Welsh as honestly i believe that NLM and Welsh will only be around for next year and Mcveigh the year after and i suspect all 3 of them will be playing at Bendigo by the end of their respective contracts and i think it would be of more benefit to encourage the next generation to step up.
Stanton is an interesting case, i think i was a bit subconsciously turned away from him knowing that he hasn't signed as of yet and perhaps expecting him to leave. Also his performance was ordinary this year. That said i don't really have a problem if he is included in the leadership group.

All this leadership talk reminded me about an article Grant Thomas wrote when the Mitchell vs Hodge debate came up.
http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/blog.aspx?blogentryid=651527&showcomments=true
He was known to throw around the responsibility to player he thought would benefit from having it. Dal Santo, Montagna, Goddard, Hayes, Reiwoldt have all captained the Saints at one point in time under Thomas and have grown for it. I reckon guys like Prismall, Monfries, Ryder and Licka would benefit from having this responsibility.
Not saying Watson ain't fit for the job just looking at it from a different angle as the club needs a bit of a shake up in the leadership department.

No worries. I always enjoy a good laugh. Keep it up!!
I like Winders but if he won't take the responsibility to have a shot for goal from 40m out then he should not be in the leadership group.
Again - agree 100%. The number of times I saw him pass it off and not take any responsibility.....well leadership sure aint one of his strengths.
Leaders want the ball and want to kick the goal.
