if essendon were able to strike a deal 4 ryan griffen, would he be essendons best player?? he could flourish in our system i could see him being such a standout player in our team and a real brownlow threat.

I'd say Watson would still be our best player considering how much more important he is to us than what Griffin would be.

Apples and oranges.
Watson would probably get him for consistency over the season but the Griffen dynamic would do more for us than any other player at many stages.
Would be an ideal addition.

Surprised Griffen wasn't AA, Watson was though. But like it was said above, different players.

Nope. Watson has him covered.

He would be in our best 3.
It's a pipe dream if we think were going to get him.
Stupid thread.
Jobe is easily our most important player - it's not just skills that make the man it's leadership and respect as well.

I hear you Ben!
Watson would still be our best player by the way and if Stanton stayed, you'd lock him in to your DT side because he would carve up without any attention (think Kade Simpson).

Pretty sure the OP asked if Griffen would be our best player not most important.
Still I get what you're saying.

Flourish in our system?
Watson and Fletcher have him covered, possibly Stanton for consistency.
Sadly, he'd be in our top 5.

let's not kid ourselves, next year there is a chance he'd be our best.....not a guarantee, but he'd certainly be in the mix.
2012 if he stays fit, i would be very surprised if gumby wasn't our best player.
Just can't see it happening, sadly.
There may be a bit of jizzinpants.gif-ing going around if it somehow happened.

Stanton wouldn't get a tag ;)

This
I will say it for Kelvin.
Griffen would nearly win the B and F in our team.
how much room does essendon truly have in their salary cap?

I like him as a player, but let's not get carried away with how good he actually is: He looks great when Cross & Boyd are serving it to him & Cooney gets the tag. Absolutely demolished by Slattery last week, before injury.
He's a bigger, quicker, Dal Santo. Which is no bad thing, but he can't lead a midfield either.
I held high hopes for him a year or two ago, I keep waiting for him to have a season where he really lives up to potential & demolishes everyone, but I get less & less hopeful every year.

He'd get tagged if he played for us. Many would therefore be saying about Griffen what they are saying about Stanton now.
Hopefully Grif would get some more protection if he came to us as our midfield grew a year older and wiser.
Grif is a great player, IMO he is good enough to win a brownlow but every year he promises so much more then what he deliveries.
He could be our best player but he prob wouldn't.

I think he would be behind Watson, Hille and Fletcher.
Happy for him to come to us and prove me wrong though. :thumbsu:
no.. hes a dud hiding behind quality players to boost his profile... never lifts in big games and isn't a match winner.
i'd have lovett back before i had little griffen

yup....all this talk about him being our best player but where would he be in the bulldogs line-up, would he even make top 10?

I must admit this is the first of heard of us possibly trading for Griffen..
But my question is, if does he want to come to Windy Hill, who would we trade to get this sort of deal done?..
No doubt he would be our best player. Most important? No, Jobe will still be our most important player.

Our first pick + a reasonable talent.
Possibly pick + Dempsey for example with Harbrow likely to go to GC.

Really? Watch much footy? He is a big game player and saves some of his best football for big matches and finals. Or do you just read the stats?
He is no Atkinson, Jetta or Dempsey is he? lol

I think we both know the answer to that...

Lets not fool ourselves guys. If he isn't the best, he would certainly be in the top 3. And with our list of players, there is probably not really a standout performer. Jobe Watson certainly was this year, but, if we had a few better midfielders that actually played more than 15 games, and went well in more than 5 of them, Jobe wouldn't be as much of a standout either. Take off the Essendon blinkers, if he wants to come to us, and we have the means to pay him, and also trade for him, we need to do this.

If we want to get him we need to pay >550k. Not worth that IMHO.

Don't worry about the money mate. You don't know what he is on now, what he is asking for, or what everyone else at Essendon is on, so, where he would sit comparatively, none of us do, so why bother discussing it. Just because it is reported on a website/in a newspaper, doesn't make it right.

The question is not "is he worth it?", the questions are "(a) will he improve us significantly; and (b) can we afford it?"
If the answer to both is yes, then we should go after him within reason. 550k for a player of his ilk is worth it. 800k wouldn't be.
What would bulldogs want for him? Would they just be happy with a first round pick??? Hopefully. My guess is they would want more then that.
To answer the OP, no, he wouldn't.
Watson is, and that wouldn't change.
He is however the exact kind of player we really need to assist Watson.

Surely Pick 8 is gold to a side likely to finish top four or five in a compromised draft, who ALSO have a need to inject youth into its side.
Pick 8 seems plenty to the Dogs.
550K is about right for a player of Griffen's ilk.
Stanton is asking for 425K ?

Griffen has signed on for another 2 years at the dogs.
