View Full Version : Movie The scariest movies

I reckon I've seen pretty much all there is as far as 'scary' movies go and none of them give me a scare these days. Some of the older ones like the Exorcist and Aliens gave me a bit of a scare when I was younger but there's nothing in the past decade or two that has given me a good scare. Is there any out there that I perhaps haven't seen that might give me that heart pounding scare?
Terminator 2 scared the hell out of me as a kid.
I think its purely because you become desensitized over time-and its just so hard to be "scared" anymore.
The only recent movie I can recall really did scare me was Wolf Creek maybe. And to a lesser extent Blair Witch Project maybe??
Ones that scared me as a kid:
- Gremlins (:o)
- The Birds
- Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
- The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
- Cape Fear (Robert Di Niro version)
- Silence of the Lambs.
Movies that did NOT scare me- Exorsist (was quite disappointed with that tbh).... Poltergeist..... sure theres more...

Silence of the Lambs, Blair Witch and The Ring would be my top 3. I found Wolf Creek fairly tame and whilst the new age horror movies & remakes like Texas Chainsaw, Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later are reasonable movies, they arent overly scary. I agree that you do become a bit desensitized to it all.

Try 'Paranormal Activity'. Probably wasn't hugely scary while watching it, but it's fair to say i lost a fair bit of sleep for the next week. (Most of the movie is set in a bedroom)

Surely you're not serious.
For me? Hands down, without a doubt, Spoorloos (the original Dutch version of The Vanishing).
I saw it for the first time during a film festival, without knowing anything about it. My girlfriend and I both came out shaking (as did many of the audience)... we had to go and get coffee and compose ourselves before we could drive home.

Sounds like a couple of the foregin made ones might be the go like Ju-on and Suspiria and Spoorloos. Caesar, is the Spoorloos one the original?
Yes, it was released in the '80s. The other one was the early '90s Hollywood remake with Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland.

FWIW, I don't find any of the many Japanese movies of the last decade or so scary at all. But if you must try them make sure to get the originals and not the US remakes.
Susperia and Tenebrae are great but might be showing their age nowdays. Like the orginal Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Psycho and Evil Dead they are timeless classics - mandatory viewing.
The Descent, yes thats certainly worth a shot! Maybe even Dog Soldiers.
If blood and gore scare you, try some of the French horror films - Martyrs, Irreversible, Inside, High Tension, etc.
Maybe track down the August Underground trilogy or Salo or something like that. Those little underground treats are so realistic that they just might give you a bit of a shock. Another Japanese film called Grotesque (2009) is pretty confronting.
Dunno, there's not much left to scare you these days. Perhaps just watch the news at 6 o'clock.

But with kindergarten just around the corner, there was concern that the little boy - who had three years worth of hair stretching down his back - would be teased.
I've got news for her - with a name like Hunter, that ship has already sailed.

The Nightmare on Elm St movies scared me silly when I was a teenager. These days they seem more like comedies. I saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake at the cinemas and thought it was scary but when I saw it again on DVD it seemed a lot tamer. Other than that I haven't seen a movie that has really scared me. Hostel was scary to start with but was too gory. Too much gore spoils the scare factor for me as it makes it unrealistic. I prefer psychological thrillers, something like Se7en or The Game.
Movies that mess with your head like Se7en are the scariest ones for me.
I also remember being freaked out by The Omen years ago.
Ring (the original Japanese film) is another seriously scary one.
The Japanese really know how to screw with you.

I've noticed that I don't find the scary movies so scary anymore, particularly over the last decade. The is only one that I found that I can say scared me and that was the Grudge and to some degree The Ring. For some reason many directors think excessive gore and things jumping out suddenly = scary. Those are the only two tools they seem to use these days. The only movie that used those tools and would say was a very good movie is the "House on Haunted Hill".
While the "things suddenly jumping out" tactic does have an effect it is a simple tool and if used too many time during the movie people become accustomed to it quickly.
With the gore these days they seem to go so far over the top that it is now more comical than scary. Gore mainly works if it somewhat realistic. Going over the top just make the character look like Kenny from south park. But on the flip side going over the top with gore can make a movie so bad that it make it good, not because it's scary but because it's entertaining. Piranha 3D is an example of that.
What made the Grudge and the Ring scary is that it built suspense and eerieness to the movie. Also in those movies the characters were more than just some 2 dimensional teenages who are queuing to be picked off one by one. The Grudge and the Ring made it so that you start to identify with the characters and care if they make it or not.

The Exorcist still packs a punch, despite how it's dated.
The Omen still rates as one of the most intense films I've ever seen, even minus the gory death scenes. The whole mood of the film is unrelenting tension.
The original Nightmare on Elm St ****ed me up, I refused to go to sleep for weeks (I was 8 when I first saw it). In the end I had to take meds to go to sleep. Now I watch the film and laugh.
Event Horizon is another, mainly because of the way you're sucker-punched about halfway in and the entire complexion of the film changes. It's hard to imagine that Paul WS Anderson actually made a decent film, once.
Carpenter's The Thing is the perfect mix of gore, tension, suspense and shock. Probably moreso than Alien, which is more atmospheric.

Really struggled to fall asleep.. I even had Freddy appear in my dreams every now and then but after watching it for the first time did my head in :thumbsd:
Other scary movies that scared me back when i was a kid was chucky.. Hated dolls ever since

Check out Kairo (aka Pulse) too - easily the best of those Japanese horrors made around 2000, IMO. Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a very talented director.
I'd rate Audition second, followed by Ringu and then Ju-on, of some of the others.
Avoid the pile of crap that is the Pulse remake though - they pretty much ripped out the soul of the movie, and with the shell that was left, made something else.
Also agree with Dee - check out Martyrs, Inside, Haute Tension and Irreversible too if you don't mind fairly brutal, but intense movies.
Can't go wrong with Suspiria - classic movie.

+1. Just when you think you're watching a normal Sci-Fi movie, it goes all freaky on you.

Superb film. I haven't seen The Grudge yet, but I've heard that's the scariest Jap film.

Maybe it's lame of me to admit this, but Room 1408 freaked me out a bit.
That wasn't a bad film. There seems to be different types of scary. There is the suspense/impact scary and the "plays with your mind" scary. Room 1408 is the later of those two. While it wasn't scary I found how those pictures started coming alive and the guy who attacked the main character appearing in one freakish for some reason. To be honest I rather the "plays with your head" films over the suspense/impact ones.
Other scary movies that scared me back when i was a kid was chucky.. Hated dolls ever since
That one was scary.
Another older one that creeped me out years ago was Pet Cemetary.
Saw a film called Spellbinder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spellbinder_(1988_film)) when I was a kid, which finished with a guy being sacraficed (dagger to the chest, IIRC) by a demonic cult.

ITMOM is a great film and if you liked it you will LOVE this movie which is in a similar vain but a bit more morbid. It is a French/Canadian film called Evil Words.

For sure! That was pretty bad when I was younger. I wonder how it'd hold up today?
One that really got me was the Japanese version of the Ring. Would have seen it when I was 18 or so. Made the decision to really test myself out by watching it past midnight while I was home alone. I don't think there were too many 'jump out' moments, but it was creepy as shit. The other 2 in the series were scary as well, but I was used to them after watching the first.
I can't say that I've even seen any scary movies in the 10 years since watching Ring? Maybe as someone else mentioned, Stir of Echoes? Wasn't too bad, but there was a bit at the end that made me look away (can't remember what it was, but I know that I was too chicken to look at it haha).

I saw it kind of recently, it's held up well and is one of the better Stephen King adaptations for sure
Speaking of Stephen King movies I saw The Mist kinda recently too directed by Frank Darabont who also directed The Green Mile & The Shawshank Redmeption both Stephen King adaptations he seems to be able to translate his stuff to the screen better than most and would be a highly recommended film it's sort of a sci-fi/thriller/horror

Talk about Stephen King movies. Creepshow had a few scary scenes, not sure which chapter but the beach burial with the tide coming in was pretty scary as a teen.
The possessed car/truck movies - Christine and Duel (not sure who- Spielberg?)were ok.
Creepshow 2 was just as good as well, although i was pretty young when i saw it. Remembering the stories though i reckon they are more of a laugh now than a genuine scare.
Texas chainsaw massacre was the scariest thing ever, when he's swinging that chainsaw around all the white sheets outside...

I watched The Descent for the first time last night.
Was fantastic, one of those films where the atmosphere really contributes to the frights.
Loved the scene where (spoiler, highlight to reveal -->) They are using the infrared camera for the first time and it pans across to one of the chicks, and there's a Crawler right behind her. Scared the shit out of me:D
Last time I have seen RAVENOUS movie. It is very scary movie. The story, which takes some inspiration from the real life case of the Donner Party, bristles with tension and springs a couple of great twists that feel like they ‘reset’ the movie.

The Supernatural episode of Bloody Mary.
After watching it, I decided to give it a go. Couldn't go near a bathroom for a month. To make it worse, I had to stand in the bathroom in the dark to prove to my brother there's nothing to be scared of.
IT - I HATE CLOWNS mainly because the movie scared me when I was youngThe first half of IT was ****en fantastic. 2nd half was deplorable. So disappointing.
The Descent is a great and scary flick, the sequel ('Part 2') does it a fair amount of justice IMO. Although it plays heavily on the same lines of the first but with the progression that you would expect from a sequel with some very nice callbacks. The last few minutes nearly ruin it though unfortunately.
The Collector (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844479/) IMO is a little gem that I found a while back and it's actually set to hit Aus next month (apparently anyway). It's got a real Saw vibe to it (so VERY gory), but is an amazingly tense watch.

Lol, I remember- if you can believe this- I had a nightmare about that movie BEFORE I saw it. If that makes sense, probably not.. but yes I remember the hype before it came out. THOSE scenes werent that bad, not that graphic anyway. More of what he did or was going to do to the girls was alluded to, not really carried out on camera. (except one or two things)

Heres the top 10

They have some wtf selections in their top 100 - willy wonka, a clockwork orange, 1984, return to oz, the dark crystal, the wizard of oz ...Not a bad list, some really scary movies there. The Exorcist you definitely had to be there at the time I reckon, as I saw it when I was too old for it to really affect me like it would've when first released. Completely disagree with Texas Chansaw Massacre, honestly was bored shitless of that movie (maybe another that when first released was far more powerful).
And no some of those others aren't wtf. Return to Oz I am not shitting you I had ****en nightmares about that movie for months after watching it, some freaky shit in that thing!:( Watching it now though I can't believe the nightmares weren't about how completely shit that movie was!
Was The Witches in there? Because as a kid that thing scared the shit out of me too.:(
Might have to buy that Empire. The last one I got was a Horror one, had some top notch stuff in there, as well as some great recommendations.
IGN have a Top 25 Horror's List (must be list time?) - **spoilers throughout the descriptions, so be advised** Also names The Exorcist as the best horror movie.

Agree. When its a believably good story.
Saw & such are just gore for cringe or "How disgusting can we make it" sake, not really that scary.
Suspiria after all these years still shit's on most newcomer's for genuine fright's.
Argento's Inferno and Tenebrae are very good also. Leave Saw and Wolf Creek for dead.

IIRC all of those movies listed by IGN were contained in the Empire listing bar Bride of Frankenstein and The Haunting.
I bought the Empire mag at the airport the other week.
Bride of Chucky? Seriously.:thumbsd:
Glad they picked up on Candyman & An American Warewolf in London though:thumbsu:
Wizard of Oz - that was freaky. Those damn flying monkeys...
IMO The Excorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Psycho and Halloween are head and shoulders above the rest. Special mention to Jaws & The Shining.

Very different movies.
Agree though on the two Argento movies - top class horror. Don't think I ever jumped so high in my life as I did when that axe came through the window in Tenebrae.

I just saw the first three nightmares on Elm street. Not scary at all, entertaining, but not scary.
And no some of those others aren't wtf. Return to Oz I am not shitting you I had ****en nightmares about that movie for months after watching it, some freaky shit in that thing!:( Watching it now though I can't believe the nightmares weren't about how completely shit that movie was!

Lol, agree. I remember that scaring the wits out of me when I was a kid too. Remember the room of heads!!!!!!
Also, The Birds and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (omg serving the bird up for dinner!!!!).... both scared me when I was young.
