View Full Version : Who should get the number 3 jumper?
Just to get some discussion going here...i wonder what everyones favourite Port Adelaide moment is? Both Power and Magpies.
I have a few memorable moments...Port v Carlton last year when PB kicked the goal after the siren...that was great. All the magpies premierships were bloody great...especially 94 coming from behind like that.
My favourite Power moment tho has to be the 1st Showdown!!! Noone at all really tipped us to win that game, but we stuck it up those crows. There werent many Port supporters there that day, but i tell you we made a lot of noise. I remember being spat on and knocked around by big crows wanka supporters, thinking they were top shit.
I remember giving Jamo shit for about 20 minutes non stop for trying to deck Cummings. This 20 minute abuse caused the crows fans in front of us to turn around and say "thats enough" yet they went on equally as much about Wanganeen getting injured. I remember when the final siren went i was so bloody happy...and they didnt play the Power song!!! What a great day!!
My favourite Magpie memory must be the 1996 Prelim final against Norwood. Thats when Scott Hodges went from 'bloody legend' status with me to 'God' status with me!!
Scores were pretty level all day, and it bucketed down in the first quarter...so much so you couldnt see what was going on!
The biggest margin of the game was 16 points in the last quarter norwoods way...and i remember thinking shit...we wont win this!
Then Rohan Smith came off the bench and kicked a great goal, and browny sapped another and suddnely we are under a goal down. Scotty had missed three shots at goal before hand.
With 6 seconds left (we didnt know this at that time) scotty got given a blatant free kick 35m out on the boundary...it would be the toughest kick ever in the history of football as there was a 40km wind going across the face of goal. He had to be as accurate as hitting a pin.he kicked the most perfect kick ive ever seen. I was nearly sick while he was linging up...and at the ground i didnt watch the kick until hlafway thru the balls flight when dad grabbed my arm. I jumped up cos i knew there wasnt much time left..i was in tears already. Then 5 seconds later the siren went and i burst into tears, best game ive ever seen, and scotty....my hero!!!
that is my favourite magpie memory

Macca!
Some great moments there both for the Magpies and the Power and described beatifully as well.
Just some other favourite moments of mine as well:
Port Adelaides first game, although we were beaten by 79 points it was great to finally be a part of the AFL. I was also able to get across to the MCG with many other Port supporters as well so it was realy great to cheer on the side and mix with the supporters after the game at the Olympic stadium across from the MCG.
Ports first ever win in an AFL game in round 3 of 1997. It came against Geelong and we won by 39 points.
The week after the Geelong win we beat Adelaide, luckily enough I was at that Crows home game and we stuck it up them. I remember the crows supporters crying, it felt so good.
Beating the Western Bulldogs at Optus Oval in 1997, our first ever game in Melbourne. I remember we were so far behind and we were good enough to get up and win by 12 points. I remember Roger James and Josh Francou kicking a couple of freaky goals it was just so great.
Round 17 of 1997 saw Port play Essendon at the MCG in a home game. Port won by 50 points with Wanganeen and Cummings having a huge influence.
Round 7 1998 we played Carlton and won by 89 points and from my memory I believe Tredrea kicked 8 before going down with a dislocated knee. Wasn't it great to kill the navy blues.
Round 1 1999, beating Sydney at the SCG by 29 points with Tony Lockett playing for the Swans. I can still remember Poults kicking that goal in the last quarter.
Beating Collingwood in round 14 1999 at the MCG by a point. The Collingwood fans were going ape as Nick Stevens and Wangas cleaned the Collingwood boys up.
Taking the next step in 1999 by making the finals. Although we lost to the Kangaroos by 44 points it has probably been a good learning curve. I don't think we were put to shame that day though, the Kangaroos did end up being the Premiers that year.
Round 14 in 2000, beating West Coast on their home turf. After an extremely poor season it was good to see our younger players put it up to the Eagles. Previously we had beaten Fremantle in WA so it was good to see we can be the West Coast as well.
Last of all but not least, beating Adelaide in our last game of 2000. The crows supporters were so cocky against us, although they were having a poor season they really thought they could give it to us, seeing that we were second to bottom at that time. Well we soon showed them how to play football and they couldn't even beat the second to bottom side, bunch of losers they are. By winning that game we ended up higher than Collingwood once again, not that that seems a great feat these days.
Im sure I have probably missed a few great moments but I should probably leave some others for some other people. Im sure 2001 will produce a lot more special moments.

That is EXACTLY as it was...and all Port supporters did what you did, I remember throwing my son in the air when Scotty kicked that Goal.
The wind was incredible it was swirling, all the flags were going every which way...and he could not see between the sticks from his angle on the boundary the ball was waterlogged, the ground drenched,it was cold, wet and windy...and the only person that could have kicked that goal got the ball....
Another great moment was when Scotty ran down Spier from the eagles in that 93 GF and grabbed him in that finger tip lunge " GOT HIM" pulled him down and got the free kick, that cemented Ports revival and they got up and won !!!
Those Eagles Supporters were laughing and Patronizing, and Paternal and humiliating us at the end of that first quarter when they were over 7 goals up.
My young son was crying ( He was 7 ) He kept saying "Daddy, Port arent going to win, the people are laughing at us, Daddy Port are losing" I just reassured him as I had from birth...."Son, Port are in a Grand Final ,Port will catch up and Win, that is what Port do, Grand Finals belong to Port"...We got up and won, Gee those Eagles supporters shut up quick ? My son had learnt his lesson that day..just like Generation after Generation after Generation before..
The Port Adelaide Football club were to have only 3 more seasons in the SANFL
before being lost to it forever..Its traditions and history going to a greater league
the AFL....soon they will also begin to feel the might of our club, those that believe we will be second runners to ex VFL clubs will soon learn we ARE in the SAME league .
The Magpies Guernseys, logo and New club are in the SANFL now for us to continue our relationship to an image that has been a part of our lives for as far back as living memory allows. The Magpies are there for us now so we can still have a SANFL club to follow..It is upholding the Tradition set by Port Adelaide, exceptionally !
Port now must forge more tradition in the Highest league the AFL...it will

I'm gonna go back in time, my first memory of Port was in the early 1960's, my brother in law made me a member as a present for my 5th birthday, and he took me to the club rooms, the front bar, being a typical kid I was into everything, I was surrounded by giants, they were all drinking, I was thirsty, so I pinched someones drink.
Bad move kid, I had pinched Ron Elleway's beer, he saw me, and picked me up to eye level, which was at least 10 feet tall, and said "don't do it again kid", and he got me a cool drink.
I stayed next to him all day, I met lots of players, but to me that giant frankenstein monster was my favourite.
I was lucky as a kid, Keith Spencer's mum was my neighbour, she used to take me to the footy, I remember one incident when Bob Shearman kicked John Cahill in the head, John's wife went real nutso in the stand, so I figured I better be good around her.
My worst moment in footy was the 1976 G/F, I was squeezed into Footy Park just like everone else, and Rick Davies proceeded to take us apart, it just was heartbreaking, we lost in 1966 - 67 - 68 to Sturt, 1971 - 72 to North, and in 1976 we were damn near certainties, we lost, we were horrible that day, I was horrible for the rest of that year.
Guess what happened next, 1977 happened, and I was there again, watching that mongrel Cornes try to kill Kym Kinnear, I missed the Evans/Phillis thingy, but I saw big Jack Spry try to strangle Cornes, I was hoping he would succeed. Ivan Eckermann had to hobble around our forward line, and he was a hero, kicking goals, like Randall Gerlach was for even taking the field that year. We won, I was exhausted, my head was pounding, and i discovered cloud 9 was really a very nice place
I went to the 1979 G/F with 2 mates, who were both South supporters, my day was made when Darrell Cahill was in the right forward pocket, looking the wrong way, kicked the ball over his left shoulder to the front of the goal square, and buggar me if the gale that was blowing didn't turn the ball at right angles to go right through the middle for a goal. I just knew that day was going to be ours.
Anyway, I have rambled on enough, you Port supporters know what I'm on about

Well Carlton last season. The only thing is the Carlton fans (at least the ones near us) were pretty level headed and sporting. This made it very hard to gloat. The Essendon supporters however were a different story. What a bunch of arrogant little shits they were. Now the perfect win would be to have that win against that type of supporter. But you can't have everything.
With the maggies the most emotional I've got was in the GF 1990 when Hodges went down in the second quarter, then came back on in and it looked as though he could barely stand let alone play, and then he got the record, and we won, stuff the courts.
MH
I agree with you Macca, they were all my favourite Power and Magpie games as well, especially Scott Hodges in the 94 GF and 96 PF.
My other favourite Power games were our first win in Melbourne when we beat the Bulldogs after being like 8 goals down. Also when we thrashed Carlton at Optus Oval and Tredrea kicked 8 goals and took 17 marks, I wasn't happy about Tredrea hurting his knee though.
Some of my favourite Magpie games where, in 1988 after the tragic death of Anthony Williams, Port played Norwood at Norwood a ground that we didn't have any success at for a number of years and we came back from 4 goals behind to win the game. Also in 86 at Glenelg Oval when Glenelg where at their prime, Port were trailing by 39 points at quarter time and we got up to win by 2 goals and finally my proudest moment as a Port supporter was the 90 GF when the whole state was against us because of our AFL bid we got up to beat the club who took us to court to stop us entering the AFL. Bad luck they could only beat us in the court room not the football field.

My favourite Port Adelaide moment is also from the 1977 grand final. After sitting through the 'jumbo princess' destroying us in 1976, the 77 grand final will always stay with me.
The effort of Tim Evans to be able to kick goals after being clobbered by Phillis was inspiring.
Watching Jack Spry strangling Cornes actually scared me ( I was only a youngster)but now I wish he had finished the job. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/eek.gif
Tony Hannan and Greg Phillips running all the way down the outer wing, with Kutchie knocking Syd Jackson out the way was brilliant.
The best moment, however, was Ivan Eckerman kicking that goal on the 3/4 time siren with a bandage that looked like a matress tied to his leg. It was amazing he could even walk let alone kick one from 50 metres out.
All the Magpie grand final wins have been great!! Remember holding the much vaunted Rooster forward line to 1-8? We still have fun with their supporters over that one. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
