Guys, just wondering what sports documentaries you guys would rate as `must see's'?

I saw part of this doco on ESPN last year. The story that got me in was The Secret Game. It was about a game between a black college and Duke University in 1944 that was played in front of nobody. This game was never supposed to be played, blacks and whites couldn't play in the same leagues and they were supposedly inferior anyway.

Well the black college caned Duke. Then straight away the white Duke players had respect for them as players and people. They had a scrimmage after the game where they mixed the teams. No-one ever knew about the games for years.

If you're a basketball fan, "More Than A Game" is awesome.

Just finished watching "pumping iron" (available in full on youtube). Pretty good I thought, bodybuilding was much better in the old days. Arnie really was a charasmatic person and had a heck of a body (no homo).

Some of the Jordan ones aren't bad.
I can't remember which ones are the good ones though. 'Come Fly With Me' is one of the better ones I think...

Oh yes, +1 for "One Day in September" (funny tho how that means something compeltely different here ;)). Remember seeing it at the Kino Cinemas here in Melbourne when it came out. Absoultely fascinating.... and dam frustrating as well seeing what could have been done better in response to the situation. So tragic...

I thought 'Year of the Dogs' was okay too when it came out in 1996(?). Was a very good insight into the Footscray FC.

ESPN's Triumph and Tragedy: The Ray Mancini Story is a good one, very sad in a number of ways, but definitely worth a watch.

Through the Fire isn't bad either.

Höllentour/Hell On Wheels is a must-see if you like professional cycling. It follows Team Telekom (Erik Zabel, Rolf Aldag, etc) behind the scenes during the 2003 TDF.

Gives you a massive appreciation for what those guys go through during a Tour.

good call - great documentaries :thumbsu:

those two, plus these - coincidentally by the same two directors as the above two - would be my favourites. All four are must sees IMO...

FWIW, I'm not interested in Surfing, Skating, or Mountain Climbing at all, but all of those docos have fascinating and at times amazing stories IMO. The Touching The Void book is well worth reading too.

"Condition Black"

A doco about big wave surfing in Hawaii when a storm swell came through about 10 years ago, featuring maniacs like Ross Clarke-Jones, Cheyne Horan and Ken Bradshaw.

It just so happened that there was an Imax camera in the vicinity at the time.

Breathtaking.
