Anybody read this?
All of the quotes are paraphrased, I can type it up properly when I get home if you guys want.
Great reading, not all the way through it, but the chapter on his 100th test, where Ntini knocked him out, makes for fantastic reading.
After he got knocked out, all and sundry told him he couldn't play, and that he was risking severe damage to his health if he did.
So Alfie made the decision not to play, and told the lads on the second last day of the Test...
Apparently everybody accepted it, except Roy and Haydos, who both looked at him along the lines of; "What're you doing mate? You wont be able to live with yourself if we lose by a couple and you don't come out..."
Next day, Langer made up his mind, if they needed him, he'd bat.
Told Brute, who blew up at him, told him he was ****ing crazy, and that there was no way in hell he'd allow him to play - would put security on the doors to restrain Langer if need be.
JL told him to get stuffed, then quietly wandered off... to get padded up downstairs...
Ponting comes down and sees him putting his pads on, "JL, what the **** are you doing?"
"Punter, I'm playing - if we can't win this Test without me, then I'm going out there."
"No way, I can't let you do that, you aren't in any state to play right now, and if you get hit again,..."
"It'll be fine, we're looking ok, I'll just go out there and block a couple, let the other boys finish it off... But I'm going out there.."
"**** off, I can't allow that to happen - your health is more important than this Test; if you try and go out there and bat, I'll declare!"
"You do that, our friendship is over and you can get ****ed!!"
(Keep in mind, JL seems to love Punter almost as much as he loves Haydos, calls him 'as close as a little brother,')
From memory, Ponting shuts up, but doesn't leave the change rooms - so he wasn't up on the balcony when we won the Test... Brute was still refusing to let him bat, and told Punter that they'd restrain him if need be; Langer was padded up, and ready to go.
Langer also said he went out on the field to shake hands, deliberately wearing his pads, to let the Saffers, and everybody else, know that if he could stand upright and hold a bat, they'd have to go through him to win the game.
Luckily, we won the Test with one wicket in hand, and Langer didn't need to bat; but it's a pretty inspiring story.
