HERE is a fair enough question. What is eating Geelong coach Mark Thompson?

To several leading football officials, Thompson's change in demeanour means one thing. He has been sought out for the Essendon job and he is keen to return to the former club of which he was a well-respected player and captain.

It could be any reason, it could be the GC/Ablett rumours, or any number of things. Just another Pat Smith slow news day story IMO

The team he's coaching lost last week in finals... why wouldn't he be grumpy?

He's used to success, feels entitled to success and is shocked that his team didn't get the job done against St Kilda. That's the reason he is grumpy.

He's been bristly/grumpy since the whole Kingsley/review thing over the 06/07 off-season. Patrick's never let the facts get in the wya of a good story tho, has he?

"senior observers" pfft.

He's just making shit up as he pleases.

I'm also yet to see any evidence that Bomber was willing to talk to Essendon in 2007. I'll retract that comment if someone can find a link to a direct quote from Bomber or his manager.

"Bomber, you've just won the flag by 20 goals, your best players are mid-20s & brownlow favourites, come to Essendon, our best midfielder's 29, most of our good draft picks can't get on the park, we finished 12th... how's about it? We is Essadon??"

In the immortal words of every single footballer in every interview, ever:
Yeah, nah.

What an absolute joke of an article. I'm sure the Essendon coaching job would be the furthest from Bombers mind right now.

Maybe he's grumpy because his team played like shit for a half, got 33 points down then had to claw and fight their way back, finally crossing the line only to have the goal disallowed and their easy path to the GF blocked.

We've rarely seen him angry because he's rarely had any reason to be. The only other time Geelong has dropped a more important game in the last 4 years was the '08 grand final.

Fatprick is really an idiot. Yes, Bomber is only upset because he's thinking about coaching Essendon, not the fact that they lost an important game on the back of an iffy free kick.

Sorry to wander into another teams board but Garry Lion was pretty adamant (with Billy backing him up) that Bomber basically won't consider returning to Essendon after the way they treated him during the 2007 offer. It's "fact" that he told Essendon to wait and he'll speak to them after the Grand Final because he was keen to return (I'd guess still annoyed about the review that took place at Geelong?), but was upset when he found out Grand Final week through the media that Knighta had been appointed.

Everyone in the Triple M box seemed to believe this was true.

No need to apologize.

The only thing i can say to that is time and money heals everything. Especially money.

Probably 'Just Dreaming' but one thing that gives me optimism about Thompson coming on board is Essendon's change of tact about hiring a coach. At first the said they would like to someone in charge before the draft, now they are stating that they are willing to wait. Also, there appears no hurry in the process with a list of people that are currently available that have no September commitments. Why wait unless they are going to start the process after the finals, which begs the question, who are they waiting for?

Answer = THOMPSON!

It's a new board so if he does hold a grudge hopefully it was a personal grudge to previous board members rather than a club grudge.

As a Geelong supporter, I don't think Bomber will coach Essendon!!

And, the Essendon Football Club should focus on plugging the board room leaks before making a move on an experienced AFL coach. A new AFL coach does not want to experience board room leaks to the media. The leaks come from former Essendon President Ray Horsbourgh.

I highly doubt Ray will be around after next elections, he's not the most popular man around the club these days

As much as Patrick Smith is a dik and whether or not this article has any truth to it... I LIKE THE SOUNDS OF THAT.

It would also give Hirdy a bunch of breathing space and an easy hand over in 10 years.

That is not exactly how it played out.

Damian Barret added to Lyons story that Thompson would never return while Peter Jackson was there to which Gary Lyon agreed with.

Jason Dunstall made it very clear he thougth Bomber Thompson ears were very much open to an offer from Essendon.

I didnt hear the context but given his situation he would have to say no if he was asked in public. he couldnt afford to be ambiguous or anything and would have to completely refute the idea

He didn't refute the idea last time...

Bomber rules out Essendon
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,22169604-23211,00.html
We don't want any distractions in this footy club. We just want to remain focused and our focus is on this week's game against the Tigers. I am not thinking about next year.

Didn't rule it out, just refused to discuss it...

I can't tell you what Essendon should do. I can just tell you what I am doing and that is coaching Geelong this week.

Would love to hear the context of what was said on AW.

If true that Bomber was keen to talk to us after the 2007 GF what a complete hash the way the board handled things, i.e. making the Knights appointment only a few days earlier. Then the 2yr contract extension, they really to be looked at.

If Bomber says "stuff you Essendon" because of what happened in 2007 then clearly he has ego issues.

He was asked the question directly twice by Gerard Healy and he said unequivocally that he won't be coaching Essendon next year.

The thing that surprises me is that, in my opinion, the coach that gets the best out of the cattle at his disposal is Paul Roos. Yet his name never seems to come up in connection with your coaching job. He's out of contract and if I were in your shoes I'd throw the kitchen sink at him. It would be a long shot but you guys aren't short of a dollar.

Paul Roos is the best coach in the AFL but I doubt he will come. Offer him $5m over 3 years + a house + a job with a corporate partner.
