View Full Version : Mark 'Bomber' Thompson to be James Hird's boss at Essendon (Fatprick Smith article)

ESSENDON appears poised to leave Geelong in turmoil, after pulling off a massive coup by poaching dual Cats premiership coach Mark Thompson back to Windy Hill.

Thompson, a past Essendon captain, dual best-and-fairest winner and multiple premiership player, has agreed to work as James Hird's boss in what is an extraordinary boost for the flagging Bombers, which have lost their way since Kevin Sheedy was axed three years ago.

So if the fat fool is right which i have severe doubts. We will have Bomber, Hirdy, possibly Williams or Laidley as senior assistants, Goodwin, Wellman, O'Donnell, Wallis and Richardson...we are going to need a bigger coaches box and wheres Adrian Hickmott going to sit???

Why would Hird bring him up if he wasn't part of his team? I'm pretty sure Jimi has his team assembled already so if Bomber isn't part of the plan he would have simply dismissed it.

So instead of spending the bigs bucks on a star midfielder, where spending it in the coaches box. Interesting move. We'll have to wait and see if it pays off.

Sheeds was partly to blame for our demise which finds us in the state we are in currently. He really should've have walked away after the 2004 season.

There is a saying

' Dont shoot the messenger '.

This is fantastic news if it all comes too fruition.

What is means is that EFC is a powerful club again - Recruiting high profile people to join the Coaching Panel.

Poaching a coach of Thompson's calibre, whilst contracted is a boon for EFC.

At least we have a building block to ensure success on the field.

It will require HUGE dollars if this is to happen. We desperately need to poach an elite mid-fielder which would also require some serious coin. And paying out most of or even half of Knights contract is another financial burden the club could do without. Great if all of the above happens but do we have enough $$$?

Forget about the money issues. His recruitment would add a lot of value to the club anyway, similar to soccer signings bringing in the cash through shirt sales.

Yes it's different, but the signings of Hird and Thompson would definitely increase memberships next year and will go a long way to securing some more lucrative sponsorships if the club wants to go down that route.

I think even financially they would have done a lot of work in making sure it was a viable and stable option - not just through random speculation either.

I'd say it's a massive, massive gain for the EFC if they were to get Bomber.

Bomber has run his course at Geelong. He struggles with the burden of being in the pressure cooker of match day coach so much so that he wants out at the end of 2011 anyway. With Geelong having to go back to the drawing board to come up with a new game plan to match it with the Pies and Aints, and Bomber wanting an extended break this preseason, the time is right to move on and give the new blood a chance to seize their opportunities at geelong. I'm all for Bomber getting out 1 year early to do what suits him as it will probably suit Geelong as well. Besides, Essendon have something that Bomber doesn't have at Geelong . A link to his past glories as a player and all the commaraderie that goes with it. Good Luck to him and to Essendon if he goes your way.

The dream coaching team if true.

Patrick Smith should resign if this is bullshite.

The one comment that made some sense was Bomber Thompson doing the 'honourable thing' in leaving to allow the Cats to rebuild with a new coach now that this era is over.

trouble is I dont think Geelong's hierachy see the need for him to fall on his sword.

In any case, Geelong have been smashing us for 4 years - they always come to play against Essendon, now is the time for payback with or without Bomber - albeit much sweeter with him.

I cannot believe both Williams and Thompson wanting to work as assistants (which is what they are, in a glorified way) under Hird.

EXCLUSIVE: DUAL Geelong premiership coach Mark Thompson will rock the Cats today with his resignation.

Thompson, 46, called a meeting at Skilled Stadium in Geelong with Cats chief executive Brian Cook and football manager Neil Balme for early Tuesday morning to deliver the shock news.

You're confused, what you mean is "too many chefs not enough indians" which is referring to catering staff in Victoria.

The proof of the broth will be in the eating.
