Movie Extra on Foxtel is holding Shocktober(showing horror movies all month) so I thought I would run a poll on everybody's favourite horror franchise.
I have loved the Elm St movies ever since Freddy scared me shitless as a teenager. These days they seem like comedies but they're still my favourite.
N.B. Should be Hell Raiser, not Hell Raider.

Halloween (1978-H20) minus season of the witch which never had Michael.
The original is a classic, the sequel wasn't bad either. Part 4 is also good with Jamie Lloyd character, part 5 is good but alot hate it and the same with part 6 (producers cut).
F13th 1-4 are excellant, I like parts 6 & 7 even though some of these sequels ended up tame because of the MPAA..

Resident Evil.
Looking forward to the upcoming 4th 3D installment.
The Evil Dead's are classic.
Nightmare On Elm Street a little patchy, 1 and 3 i think are the best out of that lot. I liked the Freddy v Jason done a few years back.
HG Lewis with his splatter gorefest's are good for their time, Wizard Of Gore, 2000 Maniacs etc... inspiring other work's.
Saw.
1: Brilliant
2: Really good
3: Not bad
4: Ew
5: Nice!
6: Pretty decent
7: ?

I agree that 1 and especially 3(Dream Warriors) are the best. So many good deaths in 3.

I can't go past the Evil Dead series, myself.
I'm not really a fan of any of those franchises, they all seemed a little soft and bland to me and most of the sequels were nothing more than weak copies of the original.
I'm going to go for a series Zombie films that came out of Portugal in the early-mid 70's, Amando De Ossorio's Templar series. It consisted of four films, "Tombs of the Blind Dead", "Return of the Blind Dead" (both 1973), Ship Of Zombies (1974) and Night of the Seagulls (1975). The stories are original, the make-up, especially the Zombies, are excellent and although not as gory as any of the franchises mentioned they manage to hold you in suspence better than any of them. And the eerie cinematography (dark, diluted colours, soft focus) that seemed to be the staple of all 70's horror flicks is very good.
Jean Rollins' lesbian vampires and Jess Franco's naked vampire series' deserve special mention as well. :D

Pretty much agree, but Dario Argento's genius pretty much ruined modern horror for me.
If I had to vote for an entire series I might go with The Omen. Had a soft creepiness about it without going for all-out gore and they remained fairly consistent. (Although the first one was undoubtably the best).

Evil Dead was a comedy . . .
I like the Necroscope franchise. Should be turned into a TV series.

Great Horror, when the first one came out, scared the crap out of many of us. Mix of humour which most good ones have.
George A Romero's Zombie flick's are excellent as mentioned. Argento obviously.
Thanks for the tip DEVO, will search them out :thumbsu:

Love the original Texas chainsaw Massacre films. Anyone who hasn't seen the original TCM and is a horror fan needs to see it.

ABSOLUTELY. From his early Giallo's (Bird with the Crystal Plummage & Four Flies on Grey Velvet) up to Opera his was without peer. Stylish, graphic and with a wonderful use of sound and visuals, he made the horror genre for me and no one has really come close. He was disappointing after Opera, but I still enjoyed The Stendahl Syndrome, and Mother of Tears showed signs that the old Dario style was there. For me his high point was Tenebre, if only for the one shot over the flats with the gorgeous piece of music to accompany it.

I really enjoyed the original Omen, but like The Exorcist, Halloween and Friday the 13th I thought the series went downhill with each sequel.

That would be Romero's Night Of the Living Dead.
Inspired by Romero but not his, as was Shaun, Return is brilliant. Directed By Dan O'Bannon- The original writer was a former Romero partner.
The soundtrack is awesome too.
