The producers heightened the realism of the actors responses by not revealing Henry's death until right before filming - they were all still in shock.
Scrubs - Ben's Funeral
I reckon the saddest moment from Scrubs is this one:

It was a lot more powerful before Gray's Anatomy and radio killed the song with overplay.

Cold Case had some sad episodes but this one topped them all. Basically about a poor mother who threw herself & her 6yo daughter out of an apartment window in the middle of the night to escape from an intruder. The young girl dies and the mother ends up in a coma.

Jurassic Bark is pretty sad, but I always thought Luck of the Fryish and Time Keeps on Slipping are much sadder.
Time Keeps on Slipping is probably the best episode of anything ever. Hilarious and sad.
The professor's deadpan delivery of "while you were gone the Trotters held a news conference to announce that I was a jive sucker" makes me laugh no matter what.
Luck of the Fryish
That's what I was thinking after the first post, 'Don't You Forget About Me' fits the end of that episode so well.
The Wire does it.

saddest Aussie tv moment for me
I reckon the saddest moment from Scrubs is this one:
RzDoqGGs1IM
It was a lot more powerful before Gray's Anatomy and radio killed the song with overplay.
This. Easily. Cox is crazy good in that episode.
I was gonna post the Jurasic Bark episode when i read the thread title, and then it was the first one :D
I always get sad at that episode :( Poor little Seymour. And the song at the end...

This is a good choice! Back in the day that show always contrasted comedy and serious moments like this really well.
I think the episodes in Skins when Chris gets sick and eventually dies is pretty full on especially with Jal.
Can't really think of any others ATM.
EDIT: Anyone on here watch Shameless? Episode with Mandy's funeral/wake.

Add another to the list who'd have posted this if it wasn't the OP. Always makes me think of my dog I had to have put down around the time it was first shown.
This and 'Luck of the Fryish' are two of the best Futurama episodes.
For some reason animals dying is often a lot more distressing than people dying. Final scene in Old Yeller, for example.
Yeah, very good
Another Scrubs (Geez it was good)
Carla says goodbye to Laverne
Scrubs is sooooooooooooo good
Even the episode before this one - where Laverne gets in the crash - is a great ep and has a pretty sad ending (which ultimately leads into this episode).

The episode of Inspector Rex where Rex's first handler (Moser) dies is amazingly powerful. Just Rex's whimpering as he tries to wake him up and can't get a response is... ridiculously emotional. Never mind the dead guy, I'm just worried about his poor dog!

Seriously? That whole season was a stinker and that moment stunk of desperation.
Top 5 I've seen:
1. Futurama - The damn dog
2. Scrubs - Ben's funeral
3. Six Feet Under - Most of the last 6 minutes
4. Scrubs - Cox's breakdown
5. Lost - Charlie's Death
Also, in Oz, Cyril's first execution. Boy did they miss the boat on that.

I didn't care about Tara's death that much. But The episode where Buffy's mum died was very well done. It was sad and very confronting, it was hard to watch because of how "real" it felt and yet it compelled you to watch it.
For some reason animals dying is often a lot more distressing than people dying. Final scene in Old Yeller, for example.
Definitley, When people die in shows I'm normally fine, but when it's an animal... The episode in Grey's anatomy where they have to put the dog down, that got me. Also marley and me.

Good call!!! I definitely shed a few tears with that final epidsode.
(which then turned to laughter again when you found out what Jonah had done right at the end ;))
I always found the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth to be very sad. Edmund desperately trying to avoid the final push over the trench, his last conversation with Baldrick seconds before the inevitable and the final scene with the cannons blasting and the field of poppies.
Such a great series though.

Yeah it was sad cos it was Cox's fault his friend died.

Agreed. Tara's was meh. She was shot, but really just another supernatural related one. When her mum died and they all suddenly had to be 'normal' people dealing with grief it was very well done. It almost felt voyeuristic - what am I doing watching these people suffer? Considering what Buffy usually was (and I'm a fan) it was by far the best acting through the run of the show.

all of the scrubs ones are missing the saddest moment - the very early episode in the first season when at the start you are told one out of every three patients that come in to the hospital die, and then the three main characters are presented with one, and you follow them the whole episode trying to pick which one would die. then at the end - they all die. such a kick in the guts. i think it's about the third episode, so the show was just still finding its feet, and at the time you think you are watching a screwball comedy, like the first couple of episodes are, and then - BAM.
fav show of all time imo.

How do you end a comedy series about a war?
Well "House" & Mr. Bean with Ben Elton as writer, they found a way in the final episode of BlackAdder goes Forth.

Also agree Mrs. Langinham on the West Wing.
Final episode of 'The Wonder Years' with the voice of mature Kevin talking about what happened to Winnie and Paul. Goes on to footage of Kevin's dad and talking about what happened to him.

Pretty much every death in Lost.. was my favourite show.
Cold Case is a supremely depressing show.
The most depressing show ever by a fair margin which is the reason I gave up on it early in the series.
Speaking of The Wonder Years another one is where Kevin's math teacher dies.
Speaking of The Wonder Years another one is where Kevin's math teacher dies.
And the final ep where the voiceover is explaining what happens to each character- especailly the father and how he passes away a mere few years on.
And this line too: "I was there to meet her when she got back (Winne- from Paris??), with my wife and two children". Arrrrgh so bittersweet.
Loved that series.
Edit: someone already mentioned that. Opps.

Cold Case is a supremely depressing show.
Very true, but I guess it was kind of at its best when it was most depressing. Though the worst thing was that a lot of the episodes were based on true stories. I would never cry over a TV show, but there were times where I came close watching CC.

Mad Men: The Suitcase is a pretty sad one - brilliant, brilliant episode.
Just watched this episode yesterday. I'm not sure I'd quite put it in a saddest episode discussion but it was definitely amazing. It was as good as TV gets I reckon.
In my top 2 favorite sitcoms ever..although it wasn't really your typical sitcom, more a dramedy if it needs to be classified.
If you loved the Wonder Years, you'd LOVE Freaks and Geeks, if you havent already seen it..
Sad moment from that series for me was when Neil's family hold their annual party and the fathers cheating comes out at the end...
Exchange between Neil and his mom:
"Neil whats wrong"
"I cant tell you"
"Why not"
"Cause I dont want to ruin your life"
:(
And another series thats a favourite of mine, Dead Like Me had lots of sad moments, cause the whole series was about death. ;)
IuRE6HZL41U
Not gayI actually found more sad:
- Last episode of Season 1 when Ryan leaves, Seth leaves and Kirsten is left crying holding Ryan's sheets. What made it worse was having Hallelujah playing over the top.
- Very last episode when the Cohens leave their home and Ryan goes back inside to 'say goodbye', prompting memories from earlier seasons.
I may have cried in both episodes. So what. u mad? etc

Sticking with the Futurama theme. I watched 'The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings' last night. The ending, where Fry loses his ability to play the holophoner and everyone bar Leela walks out, is actually very moving.
Such a shame that the series ended on this episode as we thought that finally things were picking up for Fry.

Soon as I saw this thread I thought of an episode of Quantum Leap I saw years ago that has stuck with me all this time.
Al tries in vain to get his wife in the past to wait for him (his past self is stuck in a POW camp but he is presumed dead by his wife).
The final scene where the holographic Al slow dances with his wife (who can't see him) is one of the most moving moments I've ever seen on a tv series.

Second last episode was epic as well. That coming clean scene was brutal, really made you realize that no matter how much you liked Vic he was pure evil without any redeemable feature.
