haven't got a chance to see much of this test, but what i've seen this has been one of the biggest pastings i've ever seen.

5/556 and day 2 has been abandoned from here on in for rain, and the score at one stage was 1/400+++++

Graeme Smith is going to be one of the champions of this decade.

Anyone who has seen more of it care to comment.......

I didnt see as much as I would have liked - reminded me of a few innings that our guys did over there - it will be interesting to see if England can respond and at least avoid the follw-on.

On Smith - a great knock - highest ever from from a South African - he seems to have a good attitude to batting and can concentrate well - i will reserve my judgement on his potential standing in the game until i have seen more from him - but he certainly looks good.

No they've just worked out that he's crap, he had a pretty poor one day series, hasn't made many runs at county level & I think people have cottoned onto the fact that he is only happy on the front foot.

I've watched most of this game, the England bowlers were awful on the first day, absolutely terrible but it was a featherbed pitch in good batting conditions plus some of our pacemen hadn't played any first class cricket for about 45 days(bad plannign by the boys in charge).

I'm not that convinced by Smith, he's obviously strong upstairs but there's faults in his technique that are quite apparent.
Get McGrath bowling round the wicket to him , giving him nothing to be hit on the leg side & then see how he goes.

When I left the telly about an hour ago on the 5th day England were needing about 270 off about 50 odd overs with all 10 wickets left, it's a big ask & the draw is favourite but if Tresco & Vaughan stay in you never know, off course a couple of wickets & we could be in trouble.

I'm sure our bowlers will be better for the 2nd Test on Thursday but once again we look poor when bowling on a flat pitch, we really need a bit of swing it seems.

As for SA except for Pollock their bowlers weren't up to too much, so we'll see how the rest of the series pans out.

Don't anyone ever complain about Brett Lee getting hit for a lot of runs.Maykaya Ntini was slaughtered last night,in particular by Threscothick. He hit 5 succesive 4's in one over.

Dumb move by Pollock to bowl Ntini first up.England needed 21 runs to avoid the follow-on and got them easily thanks to Ntini's bowling.

As much as a I dislike the ginger headed one I think it's a bit harsh to blame him for bowling Ntini when Graeme Smith is the captain.;)

I have to say though I totally agree with you, it was pretty stupid as Pollock was giving away hardly any runs at all on a good batting pitch whilst the other SA bowlers weren't as tight.

With an England last 3 of Gough, Harmison & Anderson the chance of bowling us out for less than those 21 runs must have been a very real one, especially when you consider that those 3 made about 1 run between them, albeit after the follow oin target was met.

Pollock probably wanted him out of the attack, it wasnt up to him. remember, he was ousted after that monumental WC stuff up.

So Smith is an idiot for bowling Ntini first up. :D
