We have 5 double passes to give away to the new horror Let Me In (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_Me_In_%28film%29).
It is an American adaptation of the 2008 Swedish film Let The Right One In (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_the_Right_One_In_%28film%29).
Twelve-year old Owen is viciously bullied by his classmates and neglected by his divorcing parents. Achingly lonely, his only friend is his new neighbour Abby, an eerily self-possessed young girl who lives next door with her silent father. A string of grisly murders puts the town on high alert and Abby's increasingly bizarre behaviour leads the imaginative Owen to suspect she's hiding an unthinkable secret.
Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Matching Jack), Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).

Remember high school? Some of you may still be there!
To receive a double pass, briefly compare and contrast a foreign film and an American remake. Maybe comment on what you liked or disliked about one or the other, or how they each had redeeming qualities. Hollywood does a lot of remakes and I'm sure many of you have seen a European film and it's American adaptation.
No need for an essay, just offer up an interesting observation or two.
I'd love a double pass please. :)
Trying to come up with something tho in the way of remakes....
Man just cannot think of anything.. usually I've seen one version but not the other. The main one I can think of is the British movie "Death at a Funeral"- absolutely hilarious (yet sometimes serious and touching at times) film set, yup at a Funeral. Who knows why America felt they needed to remake it, i guess the Yanks just dont "get" british comedy. (Fun fact- some terminolgy and dialouge in "Bend it like Beckham" was changed for the American audience- i guess this is a common thing???). DAAF was brilliant the way it was, and yeah no need for a remake imo.
Does that count, even tho I havent seen the American version? :D
Edit: seems like Imdb agrees with me, there is no point seeing the American version. British is rated at 7.3 and the American one 5.2.

Any others? I've only seen the American remakes of those.
I've only seen two of the original films mentioned (although seen a number of their American counterparts).
For mine The Grudge is the better of the remakes from the Japan versions.
The Grudge I felt really just about out-did Ju-On. There's quite a few really stunning parts throughout the Grudge and while many didn't rate it that highly I personally found it to be fantastic and if watched in the right environment VERY scary.
I think that what sets The Grudge apart from a lot of remakes was that the original director of Ju-On did his own American remake, so therefore the vision remained much the same as well as that crazy theme that so many Japanese flicks can have was continued as well and there wasn't a lot of Americanisation going on.
A few of the performances in The Grudge were a little stale at times compared to some of the Japanese performances (of which I'd never the actors/actresses in a film before) that were a lot more believable than in The Grudge.
But I personally felt that where The Grudge managed to succeed over Ju-On was in the scares department, I think with the time that the director had to look over from his previous version he managed to ramp up the scares and turn them up to the proverbial 11.

Ju-on / The Grudge - I still dont get why people just backed away slowly until they died (in both from memory)... Surely youd at least try to kick the pale ugly thing in the face or something before it would kill you...

To get rid of the tickets, probably need to make the giveaway a bit easier. Those that have already responded are probably a good chance to get a double pass.
To everyone else, complete this sentence: I want a double pass because ...

I want them to let me in without paying
I want a double pass because I have seen the original and thought i was an amazing movie. It would be interesting to see if the Yanks can even get close to it.
In particular the two young actors were pretty amazing, but i thought the setting in the gloomy Swedish winter and the cinematography helped to give the movie a really dark atmosphere.
Also the pool scene was epic.
I want a double pass because I need to win points by taking this girl to the movies and I'm too poor as all my money goes into my schoolies fund :).

Lol, you dont need free passes to do that. Two words: sneak in. Another two words: exit door. ;)
I want a free pass because this movie is not Harry Potter. (Sorry i hate HP. And my bf is making me see it when it comes out. Oh the horror. :()

I want a double pass because I already posted and I want free stuff :D
I want a double pass because if I don't see this in the cinema there is a chance I could download it via torrent. And what if I got caught and fined? Could you really live with yourself if you know that you couldve prevented all of that from happening? I think not, so just ask yourself - What would Jesus do?

Sorry smiths - helping a young lad get with a girl in a cinema beats stopping you going to prison. Fact.
How do you collect?
PM me your name and mailing address and I will pop your passes in the post.
Now for the Buried comp...

Well done to the winners.
Let Me In is rating 7.4 on IMDb, 79% from Metacritic, 88% from Rotten Tomatoes approved critics, and 79% from Rotten Tomatoes users.
It would probably be worthwhile to watch the remake then go back and watch the original.
Thank you! Has made my day, ta. :):thumbsu:

The Original movie is one of those rare films that stayed with me a couple of weeks after viewing. It was very dark but strangly tounching. I hope the remake does it justice.
All passes are in envelopes and ready to go out on Monday.
jesus smiths, just buy a ticket you tightarse :p

I missed out as I hadn't checked in on time but well done to the winners. The original is one of the best films I have seen in recent times. Very spooky and amazing performances frrom the young actors.
The Vanishing is probably the worst remake ever. I think the original was Dutch and a terrific thriller with a shocking ending.
The Ring was an example of how to make a good remake. The original probably still shaded it for me, but not everyone is going to watch a film with sub titles and it was really well done.
I hated The Dinner Game anyway, so Dinner for Schmuckz could be terrible and still be better.
The Magnificent Seven was a great film that maybe did not live up to the Seven Samurai original but an interesting fact was that Kurosawa made The Seven Samurai as a tribute to the American westerns which he loved and the Americans remade it as a Western!!!!
I would probably have won the comp if I wasn't so busy last week !!!!

!!!!
I remember liking The Vanishing. :o
But then again I was only 13 when I saw it, hence thought it was really scary- being buried alive is my number one fear + I havent seen the original to thus compare it to.

Saw this one on Saturday (albeit smashed at the time) and thought it was pretty ordinary (too slow).
I would probably enjoy it more sober, still think it would work better as a short film though.
Saw it today (thanks Chirfa!). Was absolutely fantastic and has really got me wanting to check out the original (which I've got but have only flicked through).
Amazing performances from Kodi Smit-McPhee (who's accent does not waver one bit, insane for such a young kid putting on the Yanky accent) and Chloe Moretz (who needs to get 3 years older and fast as it's really disturbing finding her so attractive in movies...:o:o:o). The relationship is portrayed fantastically throughout.
From what I can tell it definitely does the original justice and certainly didn't "Americanise" the film as some other horrific remakes have done. Will have to watch the original full through though to really get a grip on how well it did.
It's a bit of a slow burn of a movie, but well worth the watch IMO.
:thumbsu::thumbsu:.
Saw it on the weekend.
On it's own its a good movie with great performances from the cast.
However it was pretty boring for me as i had seen the original a few times and this was almost a scene for scene copy. That includes the vast majority of the dialogue.
Seeing it was such a close copy it still worked very well as it was not let down by poor performances. The one major thing that was changed and that i disliked was that the opening scenes give away one of the biggest surprises in the movie. ***The acid on the face moment*** I guess they thought that they needed some action at the start to keep people interested.
I am still trying to go see it.
Was going to go on this weekend just gone, but I wake up sick as on Saturday!!!!!! Have been housebound ever since.
Hopefully this Friday I'll get to go, its only down to a couple sessions a day, so I reckon this will be its last week.
I was going to go tonight seeing it's the only time I get a break from exams but they're taken it off! Argh! I had planned it and everything.
Finally got to see it last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
First of all there were no ****tards in the cinema, talking, using mobile phones, running up and down the aisles, etc etc... that def helps.
As for the movie, have not seen the original so yeah nothing to compare it to. Can see why some people would think it was a bit "slow", but i honestly didnt notice the 2 hours, it flew by,
The two child actors were amazing, and had some scary moments. AND some really awesome camera shots (which I dont really notice this type of thing lol).... in particular the car crash scene shot. :thumbsu:
7/10.
Oh yeah and thanks again for the tickets!!! :):thumbsu:
I noticed Highpoint its $18 for adult. How the **** can they justify that. Bring back $6 tickets I say. :D

My cinema(Gippsland) sells books of ten tickets for $100. Not bad value. The only thing is that they are about a month behind the city. Only got around to seeing Let Me In yesterday. Thought it was great. I haven't seen the original so had no preconceptions. Must check the original out now.

Lol that is pretty far behind. :p
Yeah tickets are pretty expensive- but usually we do okay, we have the entertainment book (went to the Kino on the weekend- paid $8 each for the tickets we saw there), + my bf has shares in Village or something, has a booklet of "buy one get one free" vouchers that last the whole year. :thumbsu:
