Anyone else catch this on 9 earier tonight? stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman from the Office as Watson. Ripping first episode to what should be a great series. Cumberbatch has a brilliant take on Sherlock Holmes and i am intrigued by the introduction of arch nemesis Moriaty into the picture. I'm hooked:thumbsu:
downloaded it a while ago. really good series
already a thread on it somewhere iirc but I can't be bothered finding it.
how much did they actually show on 9?

^They showed the first episode last night. Second ep is due to air tonight.
I watched all three eps last week and I'm in love with it. I think the modern adaptation is done very smoothly and I love the fact that Watson and Lestrade are not incompetent fools, as is so often the case.
9 showed the entire hour and a half episode?
I'm impressed

It's on 8.30 tonight and Sunday 8.30 for Ep3.
The ratings were pretty strong so I'm sure they'll pick up the next series from the BBC.
Yep... I caught the 1st episode on Sunday night and the 2nd episode last night. Both went for 2 hours (adverts included). 3rd and "final" episode in this series is on next Sunday night... looking forward to it.
Interesting take on Holmes... sort of like the entire CSI team rolled into 1 character with the personality (pros and cons) of House.:thumbsu:
I wouldn't mind seeing Watson's character actually be a bit smarter (or interactive with Holmes), but I think that will come as the show develops.
Top show so far... 1 of the few I set-aside time and put my XBOX down to watch.

personally, I think the 3rd ep is stronger than the 2nd.
Has a touch of Die Hard 3 in it though...which isn't a positive.
You will however meet Moriarty...who is one the more interesting arch enemies you're likely to see.
I dare say, there will be another 3 episodes off the back of the BBC and on Nine next year.
Could this start a wave of British drama on commercial TV?
They've been inclined to not risk it until now...could be interesting.
I hear good things about another BBC production 'Luther'...anyone seen any of it?
I have often wondered about new and interesting plotlines screenwriters could come up with for Sherlock Holmes. "Murder by Decree" saw Holmes do battle with Jack the Ripper, "The Seven Percent Solution" saw Holmes meet Sigmund Freud, and "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" saw Holmes come up against monks, midgets and a version of the Loch Ness Monster.
How about Sherlock versus Dracula?

I liked it, but if anything deserves to have a large audience it's Life on Mars.
I think Luther is airing on ABC.

Jumping on late, but was damn impressed. Moriarty was freaking crazy brilliant. Freeman was great, as always, and so was Benedict Cumberbatch, which is probably the best name ever. Looking forward to the next three, out later this year.

I imagine, will be part of the launch platform for Nine early 2012.
Actually did pretty good numbers for them last time sitting between 1.2 - 1m
which for British drama (excluding Downton Abbey) is pretty impressive on Aus network TV.
I couldn't watch this on Nein. Once you put ads in it becomes a marathon.
I imagine, will be part of the launch platform for Nine early 2012.
*lol* At waiting for nine to 'Fast track' it a month or two after it's been in the UK. If it's not on within a couple of days of the UK then they are getting my business to view it.

Fair enough, they sure have the power to fast track if they wanted to. Most of the new US dramas last month were played 1 to 2 days after the US airing. Seems like a strategical choice, as ratings year is pretty much gone and Nine have no chance of winning any of the remaining weeks.
but hey - they don't do much right do they.

Is the new Big Bang Theory screening on FTA yet?
Also Grey's Anatomy (shhhhh) has been back for 4-5 eps but undoubtedly won't be shown until next year.
And Downton Abbey (not US, I know) has been back for five eps and as far as I'm aware won't be on FTA for some time here. But that's why I love the internet...

I thought it was better than the first 3, did seem a bit disjointed though. That said I've never been a fan of Moffat as a writer, completely tanked the last season of Doctor Who.
A great start to season 2. As enjoyable as season 1, but a slightly different feel. Without the need to give the background of Holmes in the 21st century it did jump around a bit more and took until the first 15 minutes in until it felt settled.
Enjoyed Holmes being a bit more of an action man himself though. 'How many times did he fall out the window?'. :p

I read a good one over on Whirlpool... it's a fair stretch of the imagination given the whole scenario as we saw it, but I really can't do any better.
Long story short medium: Sherlock predicted the endgame from a mile off, had Molly procure a dead body from the morgue to act as a fake Sherlock corpse, deliberately set St Bart's as the meeting location, tells Watson to stay back from the building and just to look up at him, jumps off the roof into the back of the truck waiting at the kerb which is out of Watson's eye-line, morgue helpers throw/place the dead body from the truck onto the ground in his place, Watson gets drugged/gassed by the cyclist who is in on the scheme so he won't pick up some wonky details and Molly fudges the death certificate.

A few are saying we're missing Sherlock crying, and how out of character that is. That it's actually because of something else.
I also think Moffat's calling back to other episodes - the delusional drug from Baskervilles used on Watson, the episode one DNA and body switch used by the upmarket hooker. Plus the flowers supposedly have something to do with it. I also think there was a reason he had to keep chatting to John - there must have been something he needed to time in the fall.

I think that's pretty much it. Molly is definitely his accomplice. If you look at the hand of 'Sherlock' when Watson picks it up to take the pulse, it's already blue which seems to indicate a body that had been dead for quite a while already.
Also wouldn't be adverse to the idea that there was no substitute body but instead Holmes drugged himself and played dead. Same result, essentially.
Mint Condition
25 Mar 2012, 19:08
The only possible hole I see in that is that a long dead body would be cold and that Watson as a doctor would certainly notice when he checks for the pulse.
Possibly not if he was drugged by the cyclist, which he seems to be.

The 'Sherlock' that John sees up on the building looked obviously like a dummy to me.
The paramedics and the cyclist are all part of Sherlock's homeless network I think. It is Sherlock who jumps, as that is person jumping off the top, but it is the jump of a person about to have a soft landing, not a person committing suicide.
On Moriarty killing himself, I think it fit in perfectly with what a narcissistic psychopath he was. Life has very little meaning for him, including his own. He is all about the great game and killing himself means that Sherlock loses.
getthefooty
26 Mar 2012, 10:37
I didn't fully understand that though. What did Sherlock actually say apart from the "I'm not ordinary" spiel that made Moriarty think the only way he could defeat him was by committing suicide?
