View Full Version : NAB Cup - 19th Feb at Blacktown. Be There.

As a warm-up to GWS's entry into the AFL in 2012, a GWS team will be playing in the NAB Cup next year. It's a new format, three teams playing each other in 20-minute halves.
GWS's team will consist of their signings to date, and will be a similar team to the one that will compete in the VFL or Northern league next year. And for the curious rugby league types, it's likely this will be Israel Folau's first competitive game of footy.

GWS has been drawn in a group with Sydney and Gold Coast. We've been drawn with the home ground advantage, with the games being played at Blacktown Olympic Park on Saturday 19th February.
First game will be at 7:15pm, with GWS taking on Sydney. Sydney v Gold Coast will be next. Then at 9:25pm, GWS will play Gold Coast.

Save the date in your diary; and get out to Blacktown that night. While we don't expect miracles on the field, with a young VFL side taking on senior AFL lists; a strong, vocal GWS support base in the crowd will make a statement to the league and to the doubters that there is plenty of support for our club.

I'll post ticketing information when it becomes available.

I'm more excited about the GWS / GC / Sydney matches than I am about my own team!! It's going to be an epic night and I also hope they have some GWS merchandise available for the fans too!

Should be great, already got it pencilled into my diary. We're going to get flogged within an inch of our lives - given it's Sydney vs kids + Gary Ablett vs kids after all, but it should still be worth watching.

Anyone know the easiest way to get public transport out to the park, or should I drive and park there? How much parking is available?

Even though Blacktown Olympic Park backs on to the railway line, it's between Doonside and Rooty Hill stations. Rooty Hill would be the closest station, but it's still a fair walk and the trains only run every half hour on weekends.
They'll open up the playing fields across the road as parking, and charge $10 for it. Get there early - it was a bit of a fiasco when they had the Swans v Carlton trial this year.

Agree with G&F that you need to drive. BEts option would be to drive an old car, park about a k away, walk and hope it is there when you get back (smiling as he writes it). At least you can get out quickly.

These games are a must see. I am locked in

I think the GC v GWS game will be tighter then most people think. Expect with GC having the gap of about 70minutes in between games players such as G.Ablett, C.Brown and J.Brennan to be rested to ensure they do not encounter soft tissue injuries.

The gap is a silly idea, it will be hard to keep the players warmed up, without over doing it and exhausting the players.

Cheers, that should be easy enough. Depends on whether the wife plans on tagging along or not - I can get there early if it's just me, but it might be a hard sell to get her to sit around beforehand. :D

I'm looking forward to this day already, but i'm a little concerned about our readiness for this and if a big loss will damage not only the young players but also the momentum the club is building. Looking forward to others opinions.

I think the team is going to have to go in with an assumption of big losses and regard anything else as a "win". Regarding public momentum, it depends on how much publicity these games are given in the lead-up. If there's a lot of non-AFL followers showing up, it could be a negative to be flogged but otherwise normal AFL followers would have to be expecting it.

Given that there is the prospect of the first game for Ablett in a Suns jumper, plus Folau v Hunt, I'd be amazed if they couldn't sell Blacktown out twice over.

Get in early!!

According to the email I got yesterday:
Adult $23.30
Concession $14.30
Junior(U/18) $6.30
Junior(under 7) FREE
Family(up to 4 juniors) $46.60

Not sure whether that includes booking fees or whether Ticketmaster will add extra....

The test will be in the first game of the evening when the Giants are playing the Swans......

Yes they will, unless they finish ahead of the Swans and Suns and make it through to the knockout stages of the NAB Cup.

Wow, I just bought my GF a GWS foundation membership for her birthday. I got her into footy, tried to get her to follow the Cats (even bought her jumpers etc), but she is a Milperra girl at heart. She wil have 2 teams, but I think the Giants will be No 1. I have finally accepted it and support her in the choice!!!!

So, looking at those prices, I wonder whether it is just worth me getting a foundation membership as well. Instead of paying 23 for the 1 day entry, pay $50 for the membership, with free entry!

Cant wait till the NAB cup, that night will be epic. I get to see Gazza (who I no longer have hard feeling towards) run around for the Suns. It will be a huge night!

Pretty sure membership doesn't come with free entry to the NAB cup (true for all clubs I think).

Anyone willing to make predictions on how we will go against the Suns and Swans?

We'll get flogged. If you're going there expecting anything else, sorry to disappoint. We're going to have a bunch of 17 and 18 year olds playing against a team of 18 and 19 year olds with a handful of AFL stars (GC), and a team of probably half rookies and half real AFL players (Sydney). If we beat either of them it'll be a huge boilover and though I hope to hell it'll happen, I'm not going to hold my breath. :)

There have been some pretty one-sided games in the NAB cup already.. I would definately expect the Giants to lose both - maybe just by 20 against the Suns, but I think they'll be lucky to get a goal against the Swans.. The Swannies played finals last year. The Giants'd probably get a couple of goals against the Bombers coz we seem to have a terrible defence, but that's always been one of the Swans' strengths.. That could be 40 points to just a couple of behinds..

GWS are $51.00 to be the pool winner. I just put $10.00 on them on Sportsbet.

Stranger things have happened, and if you're looking for some logic...

You'll be playing one game against Gold Coast, who have already said Ablett and Bock wont be playing. Essentially, it could come down to your kids vs their kids.

Sydney arent notorious for caring about the NAB Cup either.

I know its a long shot, but at $51.00 its worth a flutter in my opinion. :thumbsu:

I'd agree, in a three horse race those are nice odds.

AussieFTW

Worth a flutter indeed..

But even without trying, I think Sydney'd have the wood on us. And ahven't they got a new coach, and don't players always wanna do well in their first game for a new coach?

With a development team made up mainly of kids up against AFL professional footballers, it would take a miracle for GWS to win either game. No-one expects GWS to win, but hopefully our boys can be competitive.
It'll be a sensational development opportunity for the GWS players, they should learn a lot from this.

Good luck tonight Giants. Hampton and Ugle are going to super exciting players in the future, and some of you may have to fight me over the position of #1 Jimmi Savage fan.

Here's hoping for a competitive showing tonight, and maybe an Isiah Stevens hanger too.

I went. Still a long way to go for them but the experience will help them in realizing how tough the game is! On a positive note the number 34 scored a fantastic goal against Gold Coast which looked Liam Jurrah esque.

Still a fair bit of work to do to get that ground up to any sort of AFL standard but they don't play there permanetly so that shouldn't matter much.
