HAYNES ON A HIGH
Thursday, 31 July 2003

It has been more than two years since Ben Haynes played a game of senior football but all that is about to change. The former Richmond player who was added to the Essendon rookie list at the start of this season was today promoted to the senior list and will play against Carlton this Saturday. "It has been tough trying to get back and there is still plenty of work to do," Haynes said of his promotion.

"It is nice to get this recognition but in the scheme of things it won’t count for much if I don’t play well now I have the chance," Haynes said.

Haynes played his junior football with Melton South before playing under 18 football with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. Haynes played in the 1999 Essendon VFL premiership as an under-18 top-up player but missed out on the National Draft. Richmond selected Haynes in the 1999 rookie draft and he was promoted to the Tigers’ senior list the following season. Haynes played five games with Richmond in 2000 / 2001.

Haynes refused to let go of his AFL ambitions after being de-listed by Richmond. He nominated for the rookie draft and he ended up at Windy Hill as a rookie. Haynes played a Wizard Cup game for Essendon against the Kangaroos at Manuka Oval and played well. But things went horribly wrong the following week in a practice match against St Kilda at Optus Oval.

Haynes dislocated his shoulder in that match and was sidelined for 17 weeks. But upon his return, he has played some very good football in the Essendon VFL side. Last weekend he collected 37 possessions and kicked three goals to ensure he was promoted. The vacancy on Essendon’s senior list was created when Jordan Bannister broke his collarbone recently.

While Haynes’ inclusion was the big news at Windy Hill, it only just overshadowed the return of Essendon captain James Hird. Hird missed last weekend’s game with a tight hamstring. Andrew Welsh will miss with a shoulder injury while Paul Barnard has again been dropped.

Good to see his fine form getting him the promotion that he deserves!

The question is though - will we promote another given Reynolds now being on the long term injury list.

I wouldn't think it would be necessary. Hall and Johns are playing okay but aren't quite making the impact Haynes is.

Toby's played well, but if his brother can't get a game, I wouldn't think he would.

Probably no need to bring them along considering that we have McGrath the elder, plus Harvey, Winderlich, Walsh, Watson (too many Ws).

Honestly Stealthy, I'd be more disturbed if we ever had a team that lined up the way we named it.

And if we put someone else on the list would this mean they would need to be payed more thus possibly putting a little more pressure on the salary cap.

Well done Benny, I'm a big rap for this Kid.

Good move i think - the way Carlton play there might be a lot of stoppages so another ball winning midfielder can't hurt. Good luck to him. Hope he erases my doubts over his disposal!

Seems Carlton are playing games with their side as well:

HB: Lappin, Martyn, McKay
C: Camporeale, Hulme, Prendergast
HF: Beasy, Waite, Fisher
F: Davies, Fevola, McKernan
FOLL: Koutoufides, McCormick, Wiggins
I/C: Campbell, Franchina, Livingston, Murphy

Are they playing any ruckman? (Note Matty Allan is an emergency)
