How we can be so dynamic and flexible with our ODI selection policy, rewarding talented youth and experimenting with different players - which has paid big dividends as evidenced by our continued hold on the top ranking - yet we're an utterly deluded trainwreck when it comes to putting a decent test side together?

Honestly what the ****?

I have also wondered about this. All i can come up with is there are alot of ODI games being played and have more time to play around with the squads.

I think the selectors believe Tests are more important and are scared to tinker with the line up. However it is all backfiring.

You need a settled test side. Can't be chopping and changing too much. But in saying Hilditch and his mob have been dropping the ball a lot recently.

Hussey should have gone two years ago. North shouldn't have lasted this long (ie if you're debuting at 30 hit the ground running or f*** off). A younger player can be afforded a bit more time to adjust to test level.

We need to find the new McGrath and decent leggie sooner rather than later.

There are no Leggies in this country even close to being test level. Smith is a batsmen who bowls a bit and the selectors want way too much from him. Our quicks are fine just need our middle order to hold up IMO.

Pretty simple.

Easy for the selectors to rest old players for the one dayers citing workload, opening up spots in the side for youngsters.

Difficult for the selectors to make the hard decisions to drop and potentially end the career of older players in the test arena, keeping young players on the outter.

This. Though at the same time, the two players under the most pressure in Tests are Hussey, who is still a gun ODI cricketer, and North, who doesn't play in the format.

You are meant to deserve a test cap. There is a reason why there is only 400 odd test cricketers to have played the game. It is the highest honour one can ever achieve. We can't be handing out test caps ust for the sake of it!

At the time was one of the few genuine swing bowlers in the country. Didn't work, but he is hardly the worst.

I've said it before but the issue with our team is as follows:

1/ The bowlers are no longer capable of getting 20 wickets per much on a consistent basis...or even somewhat consistent basis.

2/ Our middle order is not making any runs.

If either one of the 2 was happening in isolation, we would be competitive with most teams. The reason we are so terrible at the moment is 1 & 2 is happening at the same time.

The biggest problem is the bowling as there seem to be a number of good young bats around at the moment. All that needs to happen is for the selectors to give them a go and stop selecting perennial non scorers over the last 2 years in Hussey and North. Clarke also needs to step up as he has been average of late.

Finding a good young quick seems problematic at best at the moment.

North & Siddle would disagree.

North has had a good FC record for a long time before he was picked, many people were saying how unlucky he wa sto not be playing test cricket. At the time, it was the right call. Siddle has potential and that is what they are picking him on.
