I think that Ponting is our best batter.

He is so good in the One Dayers and the tests and being good in both is what counts I reckon.

Ponting and Gilchrist would be the two standouts for mine because they're at the absolute peak of their abilities as batsmen, and should remain at their peak for another 12 months or so.

All the other batsmen have peaked.

Ahh, the amazingly literate youth of today, hey Nicko? ;)

Ponting for mine, I just have a feeling that he is on the verge of greatness - the next year or so will confirm it, I hope.

Perhaps BigFooty should offer free dictionaries, sort of like the Gideons or something......

I'll vote for Matthew Hayden. Has the runs on the board in both forms of the game.

Ricky Ponting is by far and away our best batsman in both forms of the game at this point in time.

Punter is clearly the best batsman in the team - raw talent wise. He is perhaps not as disciplined as others, and he's a nervous starter...

Best in the team:

Ricky Ponting.

Daylight.

Everyone else.

Ponting has obviously been the best batsman in the team, since his debut in 1996.

Martyn is the most exciting to watch, reminiscent of the mighty Kim Hughes! :)

Ponting also has a lot of cricket left in him.

I think he is only 28.

Martyn I think tends to bat slow at times and can be boring but other times he is great to watch.

I think it's pretty hard to separate Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting and Waugh over their careers. At the current point in time, possibly Ponting has the edge.

I can't see how anyone can be definitive though. The averages for each player aren't enormously different.
