Nine has now dropped the simulcast of the Ashes 1st and 2nd Tests on Sunday November 28, Monday November 29, Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4.
This follows dumping broadcasts from GEM for next week on Thursday 25, Friday 26, Saturday 27.
They will both be broadcast only on Nine in SD, replaced by various repeats and movies.
And the FTA channels are trying to get sympathy against any changes in the anti-siphoning provisions.

Why do they need their HD spectrum at 10am on a weekday morning? FFS>

Wankers.
Conroy probably should give them another $500M.

That's shit. They already have GO!.
Not that my tv has HD (Not FULL HD anyway), but upscaled would be okay.
Team doing badly = lower ratings = more people wanting to watch other stuff on other chanels. Simple. I hate it, but I can understand it.

Mate, if it was any other team I'd agree. But this is the Ashes. People are going to watch the Ashes. Especially the first test and Boxing Day.
Must be saving it for all those HD episodes of The Nanny. F*cking ridiculous. At least I've got a digital radio now so I can listen to the radio commentary without the gap.
I feel like a broken record, but FTA networks don't deserve even the slightest look-in to priority telecasting of sporting events with their continual failures to do them justice. Foxtel isn't the enemy, they get their shit together to offer the live coverage that, really, should be a base requirement in this country. And it doesn't cost -that- much to subscribe.
Absolutley pathetic.:thumbsd:
F U Nein... SD is completely shithouse.
Honestly, how much more moronic can this mob get? A donkey would have been able to tell you that it would have been the best idea to allocate their HD spectrum to the main channel. Instead, we get 60's movies in glorious HD... And secondly, this is the Ashes, I'm sure there wouldn't be better ways to use their HD allocation at that time.
Oh and I suppose there is the fact there is nothing worth watching on their channel besides the cricket anyway (Oh and Survivor, but I get that elsewhere anyway because of their decision not to broadcast in HD).
I don't have Foxtel, but I think that the way that Seven and Nine are butchering the coverage of sport in this country is disgraceful, they have no right to broadcast any sport at all in my opinion. Ten, ABC and SBS are examples of good FTA sports broadcasting though.

We probably should be grateful that Nine still provides FTA coverage of the cricket. Most other countries the cricket is only shown on pay TV channels now, only a matter of time before we end up going the same way.
HD coverage or not, Nine do a fantastic job with their cricket coverage here, you don't realise how good we have it here until you go overseas.

Exactly. While it's dissapointing, atleast it's live. Take this over having to pay for it every day of the week.

Ashes cricket will be shown free-to-air in England after digital channel ITV4 secured rights to broadcast one-hour evening highlights.
Could be worse

ITV controller of sport, Niall Sloane said: "There is huge demand to see England defend the Ashes and I'm delighted that we have secured highlights, free-to-air for UK viewers."
If there's huge demand, why don't they show the whole thing? What else will they show from 11pm until 7am?

i'd pay if it meant getting rid of the ch9 commentary crew

How do they do a "fantastic job" compared to overseas?

Their cricket coverage has always been state of the art in sports broadcasting with more camera angles and a number of other innovations like stump cam, hot spot, super slow-mo replays etc. Most other countries cricket broadcasters were nowhere near as good as Nine's coverage and have now copied what they have done.
Besides all that they have covered most international home matches live and kept cricket on FTA when most other countries have pushed all their cricket coverage to pay TV. The only problem I have is with their delayed coverage of the day/night ODIs in WA, although I can understand the reasoning behind it.
I think nine's coverage as fallen away a lot in recent years, despite the push of technology (besides HD coverage apparently >_>)
More basic things such as the commentating, instead of getting a few decent people in to accomodate the old guard (some which are also mediocre mind you), they have created a boys club of former players. Some of the banter is cringeworthy, and I think the banter is something that is good in small doses, but the whole act sounds like a group of friends talking at a bar. Not a good basis for a commentating team, especially in regards to bias and all.
Secondly, there has been a huge increase in blatant and unwarranted advertising ( probably due to the rights $$$), but this increase in cringeworthy advertising is inversely correlated with the decline in the general quality of nine since Kerry died. Once again, I actually expect this advertising quite substantially, but there is no need to promote underbelly or one of their other shit shows 15 times a session , and to get the great Richie reading out about a show he clearly doesn't give two rats about is just nasty. Keep it reasonable, occasional popups are fine enough.
I'll leave it there I think!
We'll be getting it in HD over here. Sky's Coverage is miles better than what we used to get when FTA had the cricket, not quite as bad as you get in Australia but we still used to lose cricket to cut to a horse race/other sports events. Sky show every ball, the best technology and the best commentators.

They need to sort out the anti-siphoning laws, at the moment, they don't protect the general public, they just allow the FTA networks to do shit like this.

I don't think their commentary is too bad but could do with a bit more impartiality and less of the boys club.
The advertising of Nine's other tv shows during the cricket is a bit annoying but they aren't as bad as Seven during the Australian Open tennis trying to ram their shows down our throats every 5 minutes. Nine are at least a bit more subtle about it, although having Richie trying to pump up shows like Underbelly and Farmer Wants a Wife is pretty tacky, I doubt Richie would watch anything on TV other than cricket

Yeah Sky's coverage in the UK is pretty good. From a technical point of view they are on a par with Nine's coverage but I think their commentary team is better. The likes of Gower, Botham, Atherton, Hussain, Lloyd and Holding provide a good mix of knowledge, analysis and humour. They don't come across as too one eyed or biased towards England either, apart from maybe Botham but even he isn't too bad.
Their cricket coverage has always been state of the art in sports broadcasting with more camera angles and a number of other innovations like stump cam, hot spot, super slow-mo replays etc.
yet they still don't have the sense to put those cameras on the damn crease for run outs
