More info on Ben Jacobs:
Ben was Port Adelaides first round selection at the 2010 National Draft. Ben was drafted after showing ability to hit targets, superior decision making and the potential to play both as a ‘quarterback’ style half back, or as a midfielder.
Ben was in line to debut in Round 1 if it wasn’t for a bout of Glandular Fever which saw him lose a lot of muscle mass and fitness. He missed the first four rounds and played his first game for Port Adelaides reserves team in Round 4. He picked up 24 touches in a half of football and was immediately promoted to the seniors for his SANFL debut in Round 5. He played two matches averaging 25 touches and a goal a game before making his AFL debut against Sydney in Round 8.
Ben played 12 of the next 13 matches at AFL level, predominantly on a back flank with short stints in the midfield. It was a fairly rough year for Ben. Whilst the clubs year wasn’t one to tend towards first year back flankers to show a lot of form, Ben struggled with the pace of AFL footy and also with his foot skills and body positioning. His best game came against Melbourne in Round 17 when he picked up 22 disposals in a strong performance. His second game against Fremantle in Round 9 also showed potential for the future with 22 disposals and a long goal from outside 50.
The club will be hoping that Ben will have a strong pre season to build his endurance and pace up to AFL standard, whilst also working on suring up his foot skills. Potentially, Ben has the base talent to become a very good player at the highest level, and he will be given every chance to succeed in the coming years. Playing every game and becoming a consistent performer will no doubt be his goal for 2012.
