Now that the National Draft is out of the way, we have the first 8 selections in the Rookie Draft. I'm interested in how they'll approach this given that they'll need some bigger bodies with experience to help out the kids.

I'd suggest they use 3 picks on the best kids who Stibbard might rate who are left over, and take 5 mature types. Perhaps they should look at someone such as Travis Johnstone who could do a job for them over the next two years.

Interesting topic anyway.

I'd avoid Johnstone. He's the wrong side of 28, and he never had a reputation as a mentor/teacher at the Lions which is what we should definitely prefer if we take seasoned players the wrong side of 28. I'm not sure what delisted players there are floating around, but I wouldn't mind us picking up a couple in preparation for next year.

Probably a few mature aged players out of the state comps like Ed Curnow, Ryan Brabazon, Myles Sewell, Dan Nicholson.

I think Adam Cockie is pretty talented. They should have a look there.

They should have a look there.Agree - and also Collingwood delisting Ryan Cook - just as former Pies discards Sam Iles (GC B&F this year) and Danny Stanley have been great in the VFL this year and could step up to AFL next year, Cook will provide a mature but still young option. He won the Pies VFL B&F in 2009, but lacked opportunities to progress any further.

I think someone needs to tell Kevin to keep his bib out of it ;)

Clearly they need a ruckman, it sounds like Jonathan Giles had an excellent year in the SANFL, perhaps he's worth another chance.

Out of the VFL they'd have to be looking at Sewell, Hibberd and Clifton, maybe even a key forward such as Mitch Thorp, Matt Little or Callum Sinclair.

Then there's the delisted guys.

nick lower is apparently gonna get picked up

Lower seems to be signed, Giles would be a logical one as they really need a ruckman.

Would think Sewell, Clifton, Hibberd and maybe even Cook would be ones they'd look at along with one or two of the delisteds.

Maybe you could also pinch N.Ablett before the Sons get their first rookie pick just to upset the apple cart.

Completely wrong in the end, except for the "no"s.

Paul Daffey:
GWS: Clifton - mature North Ballarat midfielder, deserves a chance.

Rhys Cooyou - speedy bloke from East Fremantle.

J Giles - Sturt big man, on Port Adelaide list for four years, considered the best ruckman outside the AFL.

Jimmi Savage - enormous athletic talent, tall flanker, from Norwood.

Isiah Stevens - spring-heeled forward from Swan Districts. Look at his spectacular mark on YouTube.

Plus Andrew Phillips.

Quick moving ruckman with a big leap. Averaged 17 hitouts a game, also taking 4 marks. Developing ruckman who marks well around the ground and has good understanding with his on-ballers.

So how many players are now on their list ?

Summary of the players we took:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/105968/default.aspx

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
Neville Stibbard, recruiting manager
"We set out to get a balance of old and young. We haven't got a ruckman among our 12 17-year-olds or among our zone selections, so we really needed to get a ruckman. Jon [Giles] is looked upon as the best ruckman outside the AFL and that's why we pursued him.

"We see [Stephen Clifton] as an AFL player. He's still developing because he's never been in a full-time program. We've got all his GPS data and that's all up to AFL standard."

I found it strange that the Giants passed on their final two picks. Why??? Why not pick someone likes Myles Sewell???

Yep, really like their selections here. Actually a couple of boys there I would'v e really liked Collingwood to pursue this year in Cooyou and Savage.

Clifton, well we all know how good he's been at VFL level.

Cooyou has the Stephen Hill's about him. I know that's the "in" thing to say this year, but he really does move a lot like him. With full time development now he could really turn out to be a nice player if he can learn how to find the footy.

Giles looks as though he's really found his feet as a big, strong ruckman. The kicking, like a lot of ruckman, can look a little awkward, but he knows his limitations when putting ball to boot fortunately. He'll be your 12 possession, 20-25 hitout ruckman a game if given the number 1 job. A little infortunate we have to wait another year to see him as he's ready to go now.

Savage is a very nice looking player. Like said, more of a flanker at this point, but with development, and a hell of a lot of weight gainer, he could be an athletic full-forward. I really like this player.

And Stevens is another player in the mould of Jurrah and Patrick. One of those players that gets you through the gates.

Don't know much about Phillips, but they need ruckman.

But gee, as other said, they could've sacrifised one of their last 2 selections for poor old Myles Sewell. The bloke deserves a crack. They could've drafted him and axed him at a later date if no good. But I reckon, as most, Sewell would go well at AFL level. Stinks to be him right now.

From the above article:

Industry sources said the ploy added weight to the suggestion the club's start-up draft concessions were too kind.

What a joke. We pass on two selections, therefore the concessions are too kind. God knows what behemoth we would have become if we'd dared to take actual players with those two rookie picks.

I did a training camp with Hawthorn in 2007, and Andrew Phillips was in it too. Had pretty clean hands if i remember correctly, and a nice kick. His leap was alright as well.

Mostly seem OK. Must be some late pick possibles floating around for the last 2 picks or has the money run out. Sewell has been given no interest so needs a hot VFL season and try again.

Yes, GWS have not copped flack over this as far as I can see. This decision is arrogant, dumb, Sheedyesque or just weird. If there is an explanation I'd like to know what it is.

Passing on your first round picks. I don't think that's going to catch on.

We pick up effectively the 105th to 110th "best" players in the draft, after the ND, PSD and GC concessions (I'm not counting promoted rookies). We pass on the 111th and 112th. I'm not hugely concerned.

Giles will be a good short to medium term ruck for you guys. If he coninues to improve his running ability he may be more than that. Was the highest goalkicker in the Centrals under 17's from memory, so he can play forward.
