Have to specify the format.

Viv and Border were before my time.

You'd take Waugh or Jayasuriya from the rest of that list in a one dayer. Both on ocassions changed the shape of the game with their bowling.

Test wise you'd take Bevan, only because he would be the most threatening and the most wicket taking deliveries. The others are containing bowlers really.

Another one to chuck into the mix would be Lehmann.

Viv or AB, I think. Those two regularly got a bowl and always surprised people. Viv is in the Chris Gayle mode but better.

I always thought of Carl Hooper as a part timer. But his stats would have to suggest he was a genuine all rounder.

Lehmann was more consistent than M Waugh I reckon. A bit like his batting, Waugh had a tendency to fall asleep and dish up some crap in his usual laconic style, where Boof could be counted on to be reliable.

Of the current day players, Michael Clarke would be right up there, if not for his dodgy back.

Viv was very handy in the one-dayers, more so than Waugh, Bevan, Katich etc.

Seeing as leggies are much harder to perfect than offies, then your best part timers tend to be offies IMHO.

Marcus North is a better spinner than Clarke, just a pity he can't bat.

I disagree - your best part-timers are the ones most likely to snag a wicket (if we are talking test cricket)

More likely to get wickets with leggies than offies - it's just that you are more likely to get pasted.

But if you are up against a 250 run partnership - you'd probably wear 30 runs off 4 overs to get a wicket.

For mine - right now - there is no more threatening spinner in this country than Simon Katich*. Just a pity his shoulder is rooted.

* Warne would still walk into the side with a fortnight's training.

Not the best ever but I really rate Katich from the few times I've seen him bowl. Dunno why he doesn't do it more, does he have an injury concern like Clarke or?

Injury is the big one, dodgy shoulders (I think). I genuinely rate Katich as a spinner, I'd honestly put him in the top 5 spinners in the country.

I remember watching a match a year or 2 ago where we had Hauritz operating from one end, and Katich the other. Katich was just making Hauritz look foolish as the supposed best spinner in the country. The fact he came in to roll his arm over for a few overs, he was flighting, dipping and turning the ball. Everything a good spinner should do. Meanwhile Hauritz is throwing darts that turn no more than 5cm's at the other end.

An average of 30 and a strike rate of under 50 is pretty damn good for a part timer.

Agreed.:thumbsu: I spose it just depends on your definition of "part-timer". I was thinking of someone who could regularly bowl 7-10 overs in a one-dayer, not someone who is simply a partnership-breaker.

North, Clarke, D Hussey are all batsmen who could all be relied upon to tidily bowl repeat overs in the one-day game.

As for tests, then yes, a surprise leggie would be good.

Steve Waugh at his best was a fantastic part time bowler. He will probably be better known for his death bowling in one dayers which he perfected.

He was the first bowler to use variation of pace in such a way and is probably the best bowler of last overs that I have seen in one day cricket.

Agree about Bevan. Very difficult to pick and if he was a more reliable batsmen at test level, it would be fascinating to see how his bowling figures would have ended up for a whole career. Of course, he developed most of this skill in his time at Yorkshire !

like katich as well, but i do remember his 6-fer... which was against zimbabwe. probably influences his figures to some degree. nice to see him pick up some wickets in SAf though.
