The Sydney chant is unique and stirring when you're at the ground and over 40,000 people are joining in.

Here here sydneyfan

Do remember when the chant was first heard ?

At that epic Round 22 1996 clash with the WCE ?

Anyone who was there would know it was indeed a very special occasion and the feeling and emotion around the ground as we won the minor premiership is something that every person who was there would know what I am talking about.

cheers

Yeah BSA, that was a great match, being there in the near-hurricane conditions with the rain pouring down and the Sydney chant starting up around the ground was really an unbelievable experience.

It is incredible the sound that was generated that night considering the weather had reduced the crowd down to only the real 'die-hard' supporters.

BSA i remember that game!

Who could forget it Mags ?

I got it on video last November (to keep me sane during the off-season !) and have watched the game a half dozen times since then.

It just gets better and better every time, a game for the purists, not spectacular by any means but if you want to see good, hard, no beg pardons footy played out in front of a crowd so passionate they were bordering on the delirious - then this is your game !

Have to feel a little sorry for WCE though - they lost Matera early when Jason Mooney put a knee into his thigh, and a couple of dodgy umpire decisions in the 3rd quarter cost them dearly. But still the game was anybody's at 3 quarter time and the Swans played some pretty gutsy football to kick 3 goals into a Southerly Gale while holding the Eagles goal-less.

Derek Kickett played a bit of a blinder in the forward pocket and for the Eagles Sumich got three of the best goals I think I ever saw him kick (and he didn't get a speck of mud in his jumper or his immaculate mullet hairdo either !)

All in all - a real classic and watching it again over and over makes me agree with Paul Kelly more andmore. He rates this game as second only to the 96 Grand Final as the most memorable he has ever played.

And one last word - the commentary team that night included Don Scott, while his er, 'expert comments' were typically un-intelligible he was moved to say that this was the best game he had seen all season and when the SSSSSSSSSYYYYYDDDDDDNNNNNEEEEEEYYYY ! chant went up in the closing minutes he seemed a little lost for words and ended up heaping praise on the Swans and the passion shown by the supporters that night. From a died-in-the-wool Victorian like Scott, it was indeed high praise.

cheers

I remember the game BSA,

Wet, cold (I was at home, watching on TV of course), and the Swans were trying to get the minor premiership. I don't recall it being a truly classic game, other than the typically hard fought wins that The Swans were accustomed to in that era. I remember the crowd spilling onto the arena after the game, despite the announcer telling them to get off. The loyal crowd just wanted to congratulate the players. If only they were playing for the "top spot" premiership that night...... it would have been quite an emotional moment (it was anyway)

I know I seem to use posts like this to "push my points", but that night in 1996, is a perfect of example, of how the public would care about top spot IF it was given recognition. You can make a valid argument that Round 22 1996, was when the Swans "cemented" themselves as the best team of the season (arguably)

yeah very interesting Dan24

When talking about your pet theory in the past I have always wanted to raise this particular game as a good example of the kind of thing I think you have been driving at.

For those of us who were there that night, the emotion and enthusiasm for the Minor Premiership was plain for all to see - and it was only the crappy old McLelland Trophy we are talking about.

If the Minor Premiership was a really big deal (like you advocate) then you would see much more of these kinds of displays at the conclusion of Round 22.

And that just has to be good for footy I reckon, mores scenes like that wet and cold night at the SCG thanks.

cheers

Thanks BSA.

We also saw a similar instance 2 years later when 68,000 saw Round 22 1998 between North and the Bulldogs. Whoever won would finish on top.

This remarkable crowd between the two least supported team in Victoria still amazes me and shows the potential for top spot if it was given recognition.

Actually, the more I think of that 1996 Round 22 match, the more I remember of what a great game it was. I don't think it was as good as Round 22 1998 (which was the match of the season) However, in 1996, you had pouring rain, and terrible conditions (and a defence oriented opponent) yet the Swans eeked out a typically gritty and disciplined performance.

I don't know what you think, but ever since Eade took over in 1996, I have felt that the Swannies greatest asset was their disciplined approach to both playing and executing their game plan.

My plan.. to start a topic that would get you going, then bring happiness reminding you of those memories. But damn that sydney chant is annoyin for oppostion fans, but for you that should be a good thing!
