Welcome to North Melbourne #18. Shaun Atley.

Taken with North Melbournes first round pick in the 2010 November Draft, Atley was a shock pickup at North Melbourne, rated as high as a number 4 draft pick and expected to go to Essendon with their top10 pick (#8). Instead Atley was picked up at pick 17 by North Melbourne, a team who had (admittedly) not given the youngster a full interview due to the belief there was no hope that he'd last to that pick.

When Atley was still around at pick 17 North overlooked promising 21 year old Isaac Smith to pick up the exciting youngster.

Inside and outside midfielder and half-back with a lot of grunt and a turn of speed. Big reason why Vic Country won the championships. No tricks to speak of, but a terrific type whose build suggests endurance.

Kevin Sheehan says: Exceptionally agile player with great speed and endurance and twice runner-up in state hurdles, which highlights his athletic ability. All-Australian team member in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 19 disposals and six tackles.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
An inside and outside midfielder who likes to run and carry the ball.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Chris Judd - can win the ball in a contested situation and feed it out to team mates.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
The ability to get out of the traffic with the ball, clean hands, run and carry.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Becoming a more effective kick.

Which AFLteam do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
St. Kilda. My old babysitter convinced me they were a good team.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Dad, just because of the advice he has given me growing up.

He reminds of Jesse Smith a little.

Bit concerned about his kicking, that video wasn't a great showcase for his kicking skills.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about his kicking. It needs some work, no doubt, and is one of the reasons he slid to 17, but it isn’t all that bad in reality. He hits most of his targets at training and it is something he can work on. He is very committed to improving this skill. Once this improves he will be the complete midfielder. He can play inside and out, is evasive, quick, hard at it and is generally a good decision maker and a fantastic size. Give him a few years in the system and he will be a real player I reckon.

His best game for the club so far, today.

The kid is getting better by the week.

No one reviewing Shaun?

I thought his best game was against Freo, but he is improving week by week.

Running power is improving, looking a bit more confident and is hitting the scoreboard. Could have had 3 goals on the weekend. Particularly like the way he kicks long. Gains metres from a stoppage and kicks long.

Really excited about Shaun after he completes a pre-season or few developing his strength and continuing to develop his explosiveness. Look out.

I thought his kicking was actually good tonight. Given the other attributes he has, anything average or above is a bonus. 20 disposals at 85% DE is an outstanding return.

His best game for the club IMO.

Agree entirely, I recall once when he blazed away (not the only one by any stretch of the imagination) but he had a very good game. His dash is outstanding and he seems one of the few to take the game on when we're kicking out in what is otherwise very stagnant. Linked up well, ran, hand balled, backed himself and broke tackles. Very good game from Shaun.

Shhh! :thumbsu:

Evident again was his burst of speed toward the end of the game.

He burnt off Motlop at one stage and his run and carry will be a huge feature of his game when he hits his peak.

He was very good last week with his little bursts out of the backline.
He didnt try to do too much but I was hoping he would use his legspeed with a long run.

Playing his role beautifully.
love his work

I get the feeling we'll be saying this a lot this year. He was a standout today. Was clean, quick as always and used the ball well. 26 touches.

True Daz. Enjoyed watching him again today.

Easily in our best 3 and although Harley played an extremely good game, Atley was impressive both defensively and offensively.
