Him and Sammy Wright really give our forward line the excitement/X-factor we have lacked. Will be brilliant to watch.

He's aligned to us at Werribee, so will definitely be keeping you all informed of his progress.
Reading this thread just makes me want to see him play.

Assigned to Kieran this year and as Ben stated he is aligned with Werribee.
He will line up for his first game this weekend vs Williamstown on Saturday night.
We wish him all the best. With my own football, I'm sure Ben will assist me with his progress down at the Tigers throughout the year.

Bennys Carbs' write-up:
28.Harper- first game back from injury and got through unscathed, his kicking on both feet really impressed me. His work-rate as well especially in the one percenters was a highlight as well. Playing in the middle, he finished with 20 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and a 1 spoil.

Clean user, loves to drive his man into the ground in a tackle, just looks to have that 'star quality' to his game.
His kicking was really good in that game

Absolutely loved the explosiveness he provided at around 1:00, even though he sprayed thekick, he just has some real go about him. FINALLY SOME X-FACTOR!! wouldnt mind slotting in another simialar type this coming draft and having a side with a bit more of that class.

Too true. But at least when he toe pocked it, he got it straight back and the next kick was perfection. I like the idea of giving him some time so when he comes to the ones, he can make an instant impact. We've enough finding their feet as it is.

Firstly, thanks to Benny Carbonaro with his rundowns of Kieran's performances in the 2's at Werribee and OE for the footage.
Werribee
vs Williamstown (02/04/11).
Disposals - 13. Marks - 1. Tackles - 4. Goals - 1.2
Was in the midfield as per last week and did some nice things, he proved his worth as another goal kicking option booting 1 goal 2 behinds. He will continue to improve and have been impressed in the two games I have seen him in so far.
vs Geelong (10/04/11).
Did not play.
vs Collingwood (16/04/11).
Disposals - 20. Marks - 3. Tackles - 5. Goals - 0

vs North Ballarat (23/04/11)
Disposals - 17. Marks - 1. Tackles - 5. Goals - 0.2
Tacking in particular was solid around the ground. Also was good in a number of forward thrusts, his midfield play is what excites impresses me along with his kicking on both feet.

Kieran Harper - Debut vs Port Adelaide (30/04/11)
I was able to make it to the game to watch Harps play live this week and he looked relatively comfortable in the warm-up.
Kicking to the Coventry end, he lined up at half forward alongside Chaplin.
For me, growing up and playing now as a footballer, your first contest is the most important contest, and one that can set the tone for the rest of your day.
Therefore, it was Harps' first contest I was keen on seeing. It was a good one. Had to lay a tackle on centre wing, which he did with good application, was fended off high and received the free kick.
Individual contests are important, and this resulted in our first goal with Ben Speight.
Had a clanger early on by foot, which was expected.
Although you seem to get the uneducated in the crowd still yelling out "what's he doing?", or "he's bloody useless". It was his first game for **** sake.
Took a mark with the flight of the ball in the first quarter as well, which required some courage for a first gamer.
Applied adequate pressure throughout the game, particularly the first half.
Being at the ground, in the second quarter I thought Kieran was a bit tentative when he could have applied some body contact and went up for a mark, but a few minutes later, he met the ball on the lead with a good jump and better intent, 'through the ball', which was pleasing.
In the second half, he slowed down a little, and was on and off the ground a little more. His highlight in the second half was his goal which highlighted his finishing skills.
A quick turnover had more than a few lining up to have a ping at the sticks, and when Thompson flicked the ball to Kieran, off one step he calmly snapped his first goal in AFL Football from 30-35m out.
Overall, Kieran acquitted himself very well. He had a nice return of 12 touches, but more importantly didn't look out of his depth, which was a big positive.
Pressured well and used the ball well although the side had a pretty comfortable win, and I will be keen on seeing Kieran play against the Cats next week.
A bigger bodied, more intense tackling side who will push us to the limit.
Good Luck to Harps.

Do you see Kieran as a mainstay forward for most of his career with his goal sense Obba?
Or as most with our game currently, more stints in the midfield in the years to come?

Kieran Harper vs Geelong (07/05/2011)
After a solid debut against a team that was not at full strength and in a runaway win, it was with keen interest I watched Harps go about his business against a mature bodied, strong football side in Geelong.
I was glad to see Wojcinski head to him early on, and knew he would force Kieran to be accountable.
He was able to find a bit of space early on, but was ultimately quiet in the first half.
Kieran pushed higher up the ground in the third, although he seemed to struggle with his disposal of the ball which is what I expected this week.
I believe perceived pressure played a part in his output this week, and it reflected in his 40% disposal efficiency (the lowest in the side - even worse than Anthony at 55%).
Kieran snagged his second career goal with a nice piece of improvisation to snap a long goal drought for the Roos.
Overall, he did some nice things in a side that was comfortably held. He was out-bodied by the more experienced Geelong players which was a theme for all our players on Saturday.
I also thought he lacked a little defensive pressure when the heat was applied.

Kieran Harper vs Melbourne (14/05/2011)
Started on Davey and played on him pretty much throughout the entire game.
His intent early on was good, which was pleasing as I thought he lacked a bit defensively against Geelong. His forward pressure was more than solid.
Particularly evident against Sylvia on the wing that resulted in a turnover and his tackle on Frawley was also good.
He turned the ball over pretty poorly once early on, although he improved his efficiency this week at 88%. He had a limited output possession wise, although he hit Daniel Wells with a nice searching pass Inside 50.
Goal to Wells.
Kieran kicked a classy goal late in the game when we got well on top.
Overall, he was solid this week, but the most pleasing part of his game was his forward defensive pressure, and frontal pressure on the ball carrier. Laying 5 tackles was another positive.

Great stuff HH.
Harper has impressed me greatly. He struck me as needing quite a bit of development earlier on. Either I missed something, or he has allready come in leaps and bounds. The stats for this game may indicate he was down on other weeks, but I think quite the contrary.
We all see different things in a game of footy, but Harp's defensive pressure left me in awe at times, and can't recall seeing that level of pressure sustained throughout a game from one of our first year players. Hopefully this serves him well at the selection table, with all the returning players and other players in form.

Cheers Gustev.
Overlooking his statistical output, I actually thought that it was his most solid game. As I stated after the Geelong game, it seemed to me that he lacked defensive awareness and pressure.
I have no doubt that Brad would have noticed something similar and put it to Kieran to rectify vs Melbourne. Played his role well.

Still, Cunnington was missing last week and McIntosh is in the best 22.
If all were available it would be interesting to see if he was selected.
Predict that Harps may slot though multiple goals for the first time on the weekend.

Kieran Harper vs Adelaide (05/06/11)
Kieran was included after a break against Sydney in Round 10.
He only had 72% game time against the Crows, after he spent most of the first quarter on the pine.
When on the ground he had an immediate impact with a nice inside 50 to Leigh Adams who could only manage hitting the woodwork. Graham Johncock went to him in the second quarter and paid him little regard but Kieran was unable to get his hands on the footy and hurt him the other way. Kieran found it increasingly difficult to get involved only managing 5 kicks for the game and being brought on and off the ground.
Kieran managed to finish off some good work further afield from Swallow and after a clever tap from Petrie snapped a good team goal from 40m out.

One thing we can be comfortable with is the fact that Kieran takes his opportunities in-front of goal when they present themselves.
He has kicked 4.0 this year. We just need him to find a bit more of the pill.

Kieran Harper vs Port Adelaide (26/06/11) (SUBSTITUTE)
Kieran was back on Sunday afternoon after Sam Wright was a late withdrawal and for the first time in his short career he was the Super Sub.
Kieran was subbed on at just before three quarter time and was given a shot early on in the fourth.
Harps' fresh legs were evident and he was involved immediately with a scrubbing clanger kick, which actually moved the ball forward and resulted in a goal thanks to Pedersen's quick hands to Anthony whom converted.
Kieran's only other significant involvement was a contested mark on the wing and quick dish to LA which was a chain that lead to a goal from Levi Greenwood.
He did well with limited opportunity and is another step in his development.
He may struggle to find a spot next week however against the Saints.

Kieran Harper vs Western Bulldogs (17/07/2011)
Firstly, I was too annoyed to re-watch last weeks game vs Collingwood, although he was somewhat of a shining light in a dull performance last week. He fought against good opposition valiantly, contributing a career high 15 disposals and 5 I50's. I was pleased with his effort where others left a lot to be desired.
vs Bulldogs; 65%TOG.
To date, Kieran's best and most rounded game in his short career.
Started the game on the bench.
First contest on the wing, he positioned himself perfectly front and centre but failed to give the first option which resulted in a turnover being brought to the ground.
He made amends with what was a beautiful spearing ball to Edwards who couldn't convert. But he showcased his foot-skills yet again.
His tackling intent and work-rate was impressive in the first half, getting back to provide the defence with some support.
In the 2nd, Harps beat Gilbee in a 1 on 1 contest within our F50, to give us an opportunity at goal and again played further up the ground pushing back into defence to provide support down back laying two top tackles on Gilbee and Griffen. Courtesy of a turnover, Spud fed the ball to Harps in the middle of the ground, and he gained important metres with his turn of foot and put the ball to the top of the goal square (which will sail through the sticks in a few years) for Matty Campbell to finish off.
Goal. Shortly after, Kieran was able to yet again convert when his opportunity arose, and after receiving the ball from Spud again 45m out deep in the pocket, he calmly slotted the goal like a Vet.
Bonus points for the wink to Boomer after the celebration.
2nd Half.
Harps had a solid 1st half but started to noticeably blow up in the second half a lot more quickly. His game time in the second half also suffered, however there were many encouraging signs.
1. Having the ball kicked over his head on the wing, he turned and hit the ball at full tilt and exhibited a beautiful step at pace to evade an opponent.
He was chased down by Cross, but with a few more pre-seasons he will burn him off and hit the scoreboard more often.
2. He will learn from a mistake where he allowed Boyd to lead back toward goal into the pocket late in the third that lead to another Hall goal.
A lack of experience saw him guard Boyd running into their F50, and he chose to guard space directly in front of Boyd to cut off the hit-up lead, but without effective touch, allowed Boyd to slip out the back and set up a critical goal.
3. With less than a minute on the clock, it didn't stop Dalhaus' last second goal, but he laid a strong tackle on Griffin for holding the ball.
Harps has exhibited sound tackling technique from his U18 days, and he has been more than solid in the AFL with his tackling (Laying a career high 6 tackles against the Dogs).
Finally, Harps lowered his eyes very well in what could have been a "I'll turn, blaze at goal and win us the game moment here", and hit up McMahon in the square to just about seal the match.
Overall a pleasing and solid performance. He tackled well, pushed into defence like he did vs Collingwood, plying his defensive output further and contributing offensively yet again. Pressured well, as was evidenced with his chase on Higgins late on in the game which affected his shot for goal. It dawned on me at the game that he has a cleanliness to his game similar to a Bastinac (in a different aspect), with his disposal and decision making.
He knows football this kid and will be a player.
Good game and good signs.

Kieran Harper vs Brisbane Lions (23/07/2011)
Could he improve on what I thought was his best game to date.
Short answer: Yes.
Why? Well he simply backed it up and improved in some key performance indicators.
I watched him closer than I have in recent weeks at the game and firstly, his work-rate has markedly improved since the game vs Adelaide.
He laid 9 tackles for the match. Second only to Ziebell who had 10 for the game, which says something about Kieran's mental aptitude as a footballer.
He has the tools.
____________________________________________________________ _________________
He had a more significant impact in the first half of the game again, which I'll attribute to his tank.
Harps 1st quarter was very good, laying tackles inside F50 and at the other end of the ground on Hanley which resulted in a turnover and goal? I think it did for memory.
With pace he burned inside F50 to narrowly miss a goal during the 1st which was his 1st behind for the season. Simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
However, he made amends in the second and kept his dead eye tag, with a good crumbing goal on the left boot about 15 out from goal.
His next goal was more fortunate after a dubious advantage call to the Lions allowed Harper to lay a strong tackle on Hawksley who did not dispose of the ball correctly.
However, put simply, his work-rate and ability to lay a strong tackle gave him another opportunity on goal. Very pleasing.
He was quieter in the second half, displaying a nice blind turn on the wing and pace away from the contest and further pressure acts, which included putting Black under enough pressure to put it out on the full which resulted in another F50 entry.
Another good game, and first time he has multiple goals next to his name.

Kieran Harper vs Carlton (29/07/11)
Slightly under-par but solid night for Kieran.
When he got onto the ground I noticed Touhy went to him, and Harps had trouble burning him.
It may have been the Friday Night lights but he struggled to get involved for a better part of the first half of the game.
Showed glimpses in the first half, with some evasiveness but turned it over by hand. He seemed to settle in the third and looked more involved further up the ground.
He was good just after half time, stepping up his pressure and defensive work-rate, and he became more involved in offensively.
He was wrongly unrewarded for his tackle on Armfield and then pinged for holding the ball himself when it was wedged between his legs shortly after, that resulted in a Carlton goal at a crucial time.
Displayed good foot skills in the second half again, with a short chip kick to Boomer and a darting bullet I50 to Petrie who couldn't convert.
Harps couldn't hit the scoreboard Friday but he made a solid contribution after half time.
I'll be keen to see how he goes against the Hawks, and to see if his body is holding up. I feel as though he will be one to really benefit from the bye and give the last 3 rounds a real crack.

Kieran Harper vs Hawthorn (07/08/2011)
Kieran struggled to get involved against the Dawks in very windy and wet conditions in the Apple Isle.
Played through the middle on occasions but struggled to get his hands on the ball. Showed some silk with his foot-skills (which has been a feature all year now) into the wind.
He seemed to have one of those games where you run around aimlessly, to the wrong spots, and although your work rate is fine, it's difficult to get involved and impact the game.
He had only 6 touches for the game and a couple of nice clearances.

Kieran Harper vs Fremantle (20/08/2011)
Harps was solid, a game of glimpses.
As FG stated in the game-day thread;
Harper is going to be a filthily good footballer.
Took about 5 minutes until Harper was on the ground Saturday night.
He started higher up the ground and his first two involvements were handballs at half-back which included a 60m+ unrewarded run which was good to see.
It was during the second quarter that Kieran had most of an impact.
Harps was involved in some good forward defensive pressure that lead to a Joe the Goose from Spud, which allowed Kieran to put the blind turn on Mzungu, that left him scratching his head in wonder as he slotted through his first goal of the night.
Being at the game, I was impressed shortly after with Harps' ability to stand his ground in a marking contest and jump vertically to take a strong mark under all sorts of pressure.
The replay of the game does not do it justice. At the game, he literally soared straight up to take that mark. That got me excited most Saturday Night.
Shortly after, Kieran snagged his second goal of the night with a nice step inboard, turn of foot with a touch of arrogance and slotted a goal on the run where Campbell had missed seconds earlier.
That goal being right in-front of me, he really put his foot down, puffed the cheeks and slotted the goal calmly.
He was largely unsighted in the third quarter and it wasn't until the last quarter that he was switched further up the ground playing on a wing. The one highlight being his pressure on the wing, where he blocked a handball, where we won possession, then he received a handball that he also dished over the top to Mullett who ran to 50 and narrowly missed.
Overall, he found a lot of the ball, and a higher amount of uncontested possessions suggests he worked hard yet again. He tried to chase down Ballantyne for memory on the outer wing late in the 4th quarter, but he ran on absolute empty. Can't wait for his tank to improve. He has a lot of guts.
Good game.

Also,
We will undoubtedly see Harper involved in the midfield in the coming years and kicking plenty of goals up forward...
However, watching him closely, I really do believe he has the capabilities to play off a HBF or wing, setting up behind the ball.
Reminds me of Didak the way Harper plays. The speed and evasive movements he has are gonna make him a very good midfield/forward option.

His first goal was all style. It reminded me of that freak goal he kicked against WA. He loves that blind turn. The second one was a beauty though. Powerful sideways movement.
Using soccer parlance 'technically he is very good'.

Theoretically yes, but the kid has such goal sense, and such a LOVE for kicking goals, that it would be a criminal waste

Without a doubt DOP.
I don't mean I would have him actively pursuing a role behind the ball, but if he was ever needed in such a role, I believe he has the versatility to do the job.
However, you're right, he will play many years up forward and hit the scoreboard often.

Skills as beautiful as the music of his namesake. Agree he would be wasted on the wing or in the midfield. His poise around goal, finishing skills and his goal-want set him apart.

For those interested.
I received some 2nd hand information from a bloke I work with who is also a North supporter and went to school with Kieran.
He spoke to Harps recently after his Utah trip and said that he felt a lot fitter and more capable with his running (which is to be expected), but it's good progress to report.
As I stated in a lot of the player reviews I did, he gassed himself a lot this year, and he will benefit more than most with an increased fitness base and tank.
Sounds as though he is traveling well. I'll head down to see him train on Monday hopefully.
Good to hear he has benefited from the Utah trip :thumbsu: Can't wait to see how he goes next year.

Observed Harps closely throughout the pre-season. (Hey, he's a good looking boy!)
As has already been stated, Kieran has put on some significant bulk in the upper body and through the hips. But most importantly he gets another preseason under the belt and improves his conditioning and engine.
Extract from Champion Data's Prospectus (2012):
"Harper played 14 matches in his debut season, starting in Round 6 against Port Adelaide when he recorded 12 disposals, one goal and one score assist. He finished the year well, playing every match from Rounds 16-24 reaching double figure disposals in all but one game as well as ranking fifth for scoreboard impact at the club in that time. He finished with an above average kick rating for a forward, impressive for a first year player especially considering he won a high proportion of his possessions in a contest. He also had an impact on the scoreboard, booting 12 goals at an elite accuracy of 75%."
I was a little surprised by his disposal efficiency rating by foot sitting on 63% for the year, after being more than impressed by his disposal by foot both short and long. Must have been the scrubbers he threw in, during his first few games.
2012 should be a consolidating season for Harper. I'm sure Brad would have set goals around ensuring his consistency from game to game is maintained, and he impacts the contest in the latter stages of the game with an improved fitness base. From a reliable source, he will enjoy more midfield time and will continue to apply solid defensive pressure which was a positive feature in his game for a young player.
There were a few kids with the 23 on their backs over the course of the preseason and for good reason. The future looks bright.
All the best for 2012 Kieran.

Round 1 2012.
North Melbourne vs Essendon (31/03/2012).
Being a groomsman at a wedding on Saturday prevented me from attending our first match of the year, which stopped me from analysing Kieran the way I would have liked.
However, watching the full game on replay, Kieran showed some really positive signs 1st up and looks to have picked up where he left off.
First involvement was good in the forward pocket, and shortly after Harps registered his first goal with a front and centre handball receive from Adams from 10m out directly in front. Throughout the rest of the first quarter he pushed further up the ground delivering to Edwards perfectly, and presenting on the lead to take the mark 70m out, and delivering to Petrie with a pinpoint pass to his advantage. If you recall Heppell going back with the flight of the ball with very little intent and copping some flack for it. Well only moments later, a hospital kick was put up sky high for Kieran to run back with eyes only for the ball to take a courageous mark! He had a real purple patch of scoring involvements in that first quarter.
Throughout the second quarter, although he was quieter on the stat sheet. His forward pressure was solid. Evidenced by a 50m chase on Lovett Murray and another chase down pressure act which resulted in a shot on goal.
In what was a poor 3rd quarter for the team, Harper continued to put his body on the line and get the hard ball, and win contested footy (9CP's for the match) and a couple of Free Kicks For, as a reward for effort. Vision on display again, with a nice pass to Wells whom couldn't convert.
In the last quarter he struggled to find the ball. But when the heat was on with only a few minutes remaining he found plenty and was involved in some important plays that nearly got us the win. In particular a front and centre involvement where he gathered the ball and stood up in a tackle to dish out a handball that was the beginning of a forward/inside 50 thrust with minutes remaining. Then from an Essendon 'Rebound 50', he took a great contested mark and pumped the ball back inside 50 but couldn't find a target.
Overall, Kieran was solid and gets a pass mark. Should have had two but finished with one major. Won 9 contested possessions but was able to break away from packs and wasn't caught frequently ala Ryan Bastinac for example whom had 10 contested possessions but was caught with the ball on many occasion. Like others he was visibly tired, but got a good rest during the fourth and recharged for a final stint and looked to run out the game well. Which was a notable improvement on last year, although being at the game would've been a better gauge.
A flippin' loss, but onto Round 2 vs GWS.

Round 2 2012.
North Melbourne vs GWS Giants (08/04/2012).
It was a field day for most of the boys against the GWS, and in a 129 point victory, Harper was solid without really getting on top of the opposition.
He was involved early in the game with a direct goal assist to Edwards who started very well, and missed narrowly moments later with a behind bursting into the forward 50.
Generally he struggled to have an impact in the way he normally does (with his run and carry and ability to break the lines). Although he continued to run and work hard on the spread and even gave Wright a shot on goal that he could have easily slotted himself. He has only ever missed out on scoring a goal in 5 games throughout his career and courtesy of some nice link up play from Bastinac, he received the ball in the middle of the ground, put the afterburners on and ran inside 50 to slot a goal from 35m out.
Along with Flash, he had the highest amount of 'direct' goal assists with three and a total of 4 goal contributions. Continued his underrated tackling game with 5, and with 6 inside 50's he was solid in a thumping win.
He wasn't his clean self on the day, and overall he was serviceable.

Round 3 2012.
North Melbourne vs Geelong (15/04/2012).
Substitute
Kieran was the substitute on the weekend against the Cats.
A nice option considering he can provide run and carry and an injection of speed late in the game.
Clearly a player who is sub, has to have an immediate impact to be considered a success, particularly if they're subbed on in the second half of the game.
Kieran was subbed into the game at around the 7 minute mark of the 4th quarter. He certainly looked fresh and pushed himself into the midfield rotation almost immediately, alternating between the middle and half forward. He looked ominous with his first involvement and put the step on his opponent on the wing, but was wrapped up for holding the ball, as he was too slow with his release.
Geelong got within 17 points and looked like making a final run at our winning lead. Step up Kieran Harper.
We won a free kick at a centre stoppage, and as the handball was moved backwards to Sammy Wright, Kieran 'took off' along the wing, and as the ball went from Flash to Wellsy, Kieran provided the extra link in the chain, where he stormed onto the footy at full tilt, and with pace, put a step on Gillies that Wellsy himself would have been proud off, and drilled the 2nd last nail in the coffin.
CLUTCH.
Showed his foot-skills with a lovely piercing (inside 50) pass to Edwards with 50 secs remaining that he should have marked. Then pushed into space with seconds remaining to take a mark and have a shot after the siren which resulted in a behind.
Overall, I rated his cameo a nice one. It took him a few minutes to adjust to the pace of the game and become involved. But as Sub, you must have an immediate impact. Some players can, others cannot. He kicked a clutch goal, pressured well on the defensive end and nearly finished with a second to rub salt into the wounds of the Cats.
A solid performance again.
I would expect him to be moved into the starting 21 vs Sydney (as Brad will look to rotate players through that position), but wouldn't be surprised if he stays sub either.

I must have had an inkling that he would remain sub at the SCG. I don't mind the decision to use him as sub on the smaller ground.
I'll be looking for him to impact more contests than usual today.

I've been really busy with work and my own football commitments that I haven't had a chance to get the reviews up.
So I'll collate his last month of football in a brief summary.
Round 4 2012.
North Melbourne vs Sydney (22/04/2012).
Was sub for the second week in a row against Sydney. Didn't impact the game as he did against the Cats.
Was used through the midfield and as a high half forward to ensure he was in the game. Had a few kick clangers and like most of our players, struggled to handle the ball and use it cleanly in the slippery conditions.

Round 5 2012.
North Melbourne vs Gold Coast Suns (28/04/2012).
After two weeks as substitute, he started the game and probably had his best game to date.
Again Harps played further up the field, providing run and carry but more importantly, he hit the scoreboard with two key goals and probably should have finished with 3 or more.
He kicked a goal against the run of play midway through the second quarter thanks to some really positive offensive running from just before centre wing (100m effort).

After Petrie got the first goal of the 3rd, Harper put us two goals up with a nice goal from 50 off 2 steps.
I thought he impacted the game just as he should. Had enough of the pill up forward and through the middle.
Had 15 touches, but his 4 Inside 50's and 6 tackles were pleasing.

Round 6 2012.
North Melbourne vs West Coast (06/05/2012).
It seemed as though Harps couldn't back up his solid performance from the week before against the Eagles.
He struggled get free on the forward line, and really engage in the contest. There were times he was unrewarded with his running, but he made some errors that proved costly (one being a missed handball from two metres away, at half back when we were on the counter).
Was able to slot one goal from a set shot, but he really struggled for most of the evening.
Slightly disappointing considering I thought he might be able to utilise his pace and get away from being an inside player on the vast spaces of Patterson's Stadium.

Round 7 2012.
North Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs (13/05/2012).
He had plenty of mates, but Harps was one of many that just didn't influence the game "in the contest".
He was by no means poor or disappointing, but he was below par again.
He kicked a ripper in the 2nd when lining up on Bob Murphy, in the one on one, he was able to hit the front and centre and switch direction to gather the ball, put his foot down and drill it from 40m.
His contested possessions dropped to 2 for the match.
His tackling pressure was solid, and his defensive pressure was still there.
In his short career, I haven't recalled too many noticeable mistakes from him in one game. Probably because his mental application is pretty good for a youngster. In saying that he allowed Sherman to get goal side of him when he was at half back from a centre clearance and he kicked a goal he frankly shouldn't have got, after we had just kicked one at the other end. Sherman, of course, ran hot like the prick can and he slotted another one minutes later (note: Harps wasn't on him, but MacMillan also made the mistake of not covering him goal-side).
His other mistake, was the kick across the face of goal, which was chopped off and slotted home. Dogs pressed right up, and he may have had nothing further afield, plus with no-one supporting him to give the hands, he was forced to spot up a difficult target. Still a mistake nonetheless.

I watched Kieran at training the other day and I would have to say that he is a great kick. He hardly missed any of his practice shots from about 45 out, close to the boundary.
I would happily back him over a lot of the other boys if you needed a kick to win the match. He also seems to be a very good kick on the run as well.
My question is that whether he would be a better playing closer to goals. To me he doesnt have the body size to be expected to do a huge amount of tackling work.

My question is that whether he would be a better playing closer to goals. To me he doesnt have the body size to be expected to do a huge amount of tackling work.
His defensive minded work and tackling has always been good for a kid his age. He averaged around 3.5 tackles in his debut season and is around the same mark again this year.
The most discernible difference this year is that he has spent some more time further up the ground and in the midfield.
At times, it has worked (eg. the link and run goal vs GC), at other times he doesn't impact the contest.
