Any chance of the cricket club finding another venue so the ground would be available for Box Hill FC?

Unfortunately not Rudi - One of the top grounds for Sub District cricket - finals were played there last season and maybe again this season.

BHH v Casey now at Pakenham

The practice games scheduled for Saturday 5th March will now be played at Toomuc Recreation Reserve, Princes Highway Pakenham. The Development Team play at 11.00am and the Seniors play at 1.30pm. Based on what I have observed at training I think the Mustang Hawkers are set to have a very good season so come along and see our exciting young players in action.

Last week there were 28 players listed in the squad to play North so my guess is 28 players will be listed to play Richmond, 9 to 12 players will be rested or not fit for selection therefore 9 to 12 players will play in the BHH practice games. I can't wait to see the talented young BHH recruits playing in the senior and development teams. The development team won the 2009 and 2010 premierships so come down early to watch the team prepare for a crack at three premierships in three years.

If there was a practice match today, which there wasnt, my prediction would be a Coburg win by about 29 points;)

Club didn't want a crowd due to the lack of public facilities etc, hence it was officially cancelled. Nothing more sinister than that.

Bradway Knows ;)

As I was at the fence, I can't give you much of an overview of how the match played out, but I will share some of what I saw from my position.

Was at the bench when Coburg's physio/doctor spoke with Musto, who injured his ankle at the 18 minute mark of the first, not good signs for the lad, I won't share what I heard, but it sounds like he'll miss a few games in the season proper due to the injury.

Lowden may be nicknamed Sticks, but he's a big unit, needs more muscle, but he doesn't have to do laps in the shower to get wet any more.
Also showed some pleasing signs today, aggressive and committed, if a little sloppy at times by hand.

Mitch Hallahan copped a stinger, ran around with a limp right shoulder for a short period, refused to come off, must have had a warm cup of concrete stashed in his shorts, impressive specimen.
He was also very vocal from the sidelines, a leader in the making.

Tom Murphy was another that had plenty to say, not backwards in coming forwards when some of the young blokes didn't work hard enough to get the rotations done.

Speaking of rotations, they were all set at either 3 or 5 minutes, depending on the quarter, regardless of how the game was unfolding, reminded me of a time long gone at Hawthorn.

Some more to add, will be back later.

Is that all the margin was? I saw the second half and it would have been close to 12 goals to 3 in coburgs favour or thereabouts. They smashed us.

Ahh the practice match that wasn't,don't know why there was so much secrecy about this match being played at Waverley, with both officials from Box Hill and Coburg denying that there was going to be a match at all.

But anyway Box Hill did look good in the first half with hard running and creating play around the ground but for some reason completely turned off and started to chase players, their handballs were very poor especially in the 2nd half and failed to press up.

But i think once they get settled they will have a good year ahead.

Coburg won by 29pts. after being only 2 pts up at 3/4 time.

Thought Box Hill would overun them as they had the use of the wind in the last qrt. but unfortunately ran out of gas.

Quarter by quarter scores:
BHH 2.4.16; 6.9.45; 7.10.52; 8.11.59
Coburg 1.2.8; 2.3.15; 8.6.54; 13.11.89

BHH second half was very poor however I will cut the players some slack because we had one less player on the bench at the start of the game, lost Muston in the first quarter, Lowden and Morton were playing their first games and Murphy was returning from injury. My role meant I could only observe minimal game time so I can't post any thoughts on individual players.

To set the record straight BHH did not indicate the game was cancelled however they did ask that only players and staff attend the game. It appears there is some confusion because the post on the game was cancelled.

A council thing.....we don't have the ability to play games and host "crowds" it would seem due to lack of public facilities (ie loos). Hence the game was cancelled for public viewing. Sorry to look like Stalinist Russia and it wasn't our intention or Box Hills to not allow you in otherwise but atleast it gave the boys some match practice.

You can imagine leaving reference to the game and then telling supporters not to attend would be like waving a red flag at a bull.

And thanks to those who obviously have telepathic skills to be able to post from a game they were never at ;)

Anyhow, I've moved on from Stalinist Russia and am now happy to play the role of Colonel Gaddafi :D

I can see your point of view and the reasons why,

but i still thought that you shouldn't have titled a thread to say that the practice match was "cancelled "

The reason being because you created so much confusion and i know of one particular parent ( you can sms me if you want ) of a senior Box Hill Hawks player who lives in the country was also confused after being told by his son that the match was being played at Waverley and then he read the thread that the match was CANCELLED.

So unfortunately he rung up his son late at night to confirm ( if the match was cancelled as he had to make a trip from the country to see his son play.)and woke him up to an irate son i beleive for waking him up.

End of story.

I had a dream last night that I was watching the second half of the Box Hill v Coburg game.

As with dreams sometimes you can't quite recall all the detail so I can't remember what ground they were playing on.

I remember that Bruest, Schoenmakers, Duryea, Grimley, Menegola, Langford were not playing from what I can remember.

Goldhawk was in my dream (his avatar doesn't do justice to the flesh) and told me Schneider wasn't out there either.

Those who were out there (and remember this was only the second half):

Lowden - looked pretty underdone but a lot to like about him. A couple of brilliant left-handed taps to advantage. He is a big boy height-wise but still has some filling out to do so he can hold his ground at the boundary stoppages. Nice mover. I hope we give him a little bit of AFL game time later this year so he gets a taste of the next level.

Morton - looked very underdone which is understandable given he has been injured. Played forward without much effect - no-one up forward had any real effect given we had 11 goals to 2 kicked against us in the second half. Was nice and vocal out there in support of teammates which is always good to see. Needs some serious match conditioning before he would be considered at AFL level.

Milne - was ruck roving. He is always in the play in terms of being where the ball is which is a good quality but not quite strong enough yet to break out of trouble with the ball so a lot of scrappy possessions. He is a work in progress but potentially a useful utility. He is in the mix for depth at AFL level I reckon but the lower rungs.

Litherland - I would estimate he only had 5 stats in the second half. That looks like the sort of player he is - low possession defender. His kicking is a bit better than I thought. He kicked one spearing kickout past the 50 in gusty conditions. I can see him at AFL level this year. Good speed and doesn't fall over. I reckon we can mould him into a good defender and he will learn to win more ball with experience.

Williams - Played on the far wing for most of the second half as part of rotations. I cannot recall him getting a single stat. Its funny as seeing him in the AFL side against the Kangas at Geelong he looked like an AFL player but at VFL level seems to struggle to win the ball. He is a purely offensive player so needs to win a mountain of the ball at VFL level if he is going to push into the AFL side. I hope he had a good first half.

Murphy - clearly needed the run. Typical Murphy game - hands on hips, run around splay footed. Was pretty vocal out there. Looked a mile off AFL level conditioning-wise. His kicking was poor. Just wonder if his gold card from Clarko has a 2011 imprint on it. Hard to see him playing round 1 on that form and moreso given his state of fitness.

Hallahan - first time I have seen him. Great size, hard as nails and loves to get his hands dirty. Vocal on the field. Looks to be a leader. Ben Nason was killing us and Hallahan ran with him briefly and was bumping him etc so has that in your face attitude which is great. Can see him at AFL level this year but would have to replace a Sewell, Mitchell, etc as definately a medium-paced genuine inside mid.

Wanganeen - only one bit of good play late in the game which was using his dancing shoes to run around a few blokes at a stoppage - very much like Rioli can do. Otherwise looks a mile off in terms of workrate. Prob development squad for him but it would be better for him to be challenged at VFL senior level as he has some ability.

Mahoney - looks like Lance Picioane. Solid build. Imagine he will spend 2011 in the development squad. Not as quick as I would have hoped for someone of his stature. Still very much learning the game.

Siera - moves really well. Is developing at a good rate. Still a couple of good preseasons from being a regular in the AFL seniors but I reckon he will get there. Good anticipation, good speed and really good kicking skills. I reckon he is in our depth calcuations for AFL this year.

Tuck - can't recall how much of the second half he played but didn't feature much in terms of possessions. I have been a fan of Tucky and a believer that he can make it but I am starting to question things just because of his speed.

Ahmat-Watkins - doesn't win much of it which says to me he doesn't quite have the tank at this stage. He is nice and balanced and looks ok with the ball but just doesn't feature much.

Of the Box Hill guys I thought Kiel and Gibbo were good. Jackson was ok other than his red boots. How Patterson has been on 2 AFL lists is staggering but he is honest. Who was No. 2 for Box Hill?

In between a rock and a hard place here mate. As soon as I heard words that there could be issues, I pulled the match thread and created the cancelled one.

Sorry to those who were incovenienced by it all or disappointed to miss the game. But you can imagine how it would have gone down if we got a decent crowd to Waverley and a few council inspectors visiting also.....this was a last ditch attempt by the club to play a pracy game and not something that could really have been foreseen.

4P I do remember hearing Thomo being called out for No. 30 but I didn't have a close look at him. Mirra was ok up back - it was certainly coming down plenty.

No. 2 - Hoegal I thought was impressive.

Can't believe how much of a dead ringer Ben Kennedy is for Josh Kennedy. It is just staggering. He is a big boy like Josh. Looks like he needs a few hard preseasons like Josh did. Is he expected to be a regular at senior level this year?

The Development Team practice match was played at Lalor this morning. In the last two seasons the team has had the ability to dig deep when they are challenged or down on numbers and the effort by the boys today was sensational. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday morning and a lot of the BHH players made arrangements to go away for the long weekend, booked tickets to a live concert and one player had his 21st birthday party last night. As a result we had only 16 players and arrangements were made for Lalor to provide five top up players. Well the top up players may have done a little topping up last night because we finished up with 16 players and the game was played with no wing men and there were four 15 minute quarters.

Coburg kicked with a 3 to 4 goal breeze in the first quarter and the quarter by quarter scores were:
BHH 0.0.0; 2.3.15; 3.3.21; 7.7.49
Coburg 2.1.13; 3.1.19; 7.7.49; 8.8.56

Our 16 players are all worthy of mention for their strength of character to match it against a team with eight (8) players rotating on and off the field. Jarrad Boumann, Aaron Johns, Brent Wallace, Jackson Sketcher, Ben Monkhurst, James Wilsen, Corey Cassidy, Liam Tobin, Jackson Bolton, Josh Ralph, Scott Carroll, Nick Iliov, Andy Ellis, Tom Cunningham, Tom Wilson and Anthony Fagan. There were no injuries although the boys were totally spent after the game as was a mature aged water boy who slowed down significantly in the last quarter. I'll sleep well tonight.
