KEY Swan Districts play-maker Wayde Twomey is having a third straight outstanding WAFL season, this time with the added responsibility of stopping roles as he prepares for Sunday's second semi-final with Claremont at Claremont Oval.

Twomey arrived at Swan Districts from VFL club Werribee and over three seasons has established himself as one of the most creative players and best users of the ball coming out of defence.

While more time in the midfield might be something he craves, he has made the role across half-back his own and after being able to basically roam free in 2008 and 09, he has done some good stopping roles on dangerous forwards as well this year.

Twomey was able to spend more time in the midfield in last Saturday's 110-point win over Peel at Steel Blue Oval and picked up 36 possessions and kicked three goals as a result.

“I’m a ‘sparky’ by profession, and I was setting up a powerpoint at the time while watching the draft on my iphone,” said Twomey, who was wiring a house in the Perth suburb of Caning Vale.

“These are exciting times and I couldn’t be happier. It (the drafting) has quite literally all come out of the blue, although I did get a call from (Carlton’s assistant national recruiting manager) Shane Rogers last week and had a little bit of an inkling.”

Twomey expects to fly out of Perth tomorrow to immediately embark on the latest phase of his football life, and renew acquaintance with the Blues’ other Swan Districts imports Dennis Armfield, David Ellard and Jeff Garlett with whom he has previously rubbed shoulders.

The only remark I can make with any qualification about Twomey is that he is an extremely elegant runner.

Very fluid and covers ground very quickly.
Was doing multiple 200 metre sprints and didn't let up on pace at any time.

The former Werribee VFL player, who switched to Swan Districts in the WAFL to further his career and effect a "change of lifestyle", is hoping he can make a similar impact to that of Michael Barlow and former teammate James Podsiadly, who have led the way for mature-age recruits.

"I hope so because I reckon I'd be only there for a year if I don't play a game and I'll be back in WA," Twomey said. "I definitely have to play a senior game or else there's no point of me being here.

"I'm under the impression that I have to prove myself. They [Carlton] haven't put any pressure on me, but I just needed an opportunity. As a 24-year-old, I was lucky to get the opportunity."

He had been juggling his trade work as an electrician with the slim prospect that he may get picked up by an AFL club since he left school.

"I was actually setting up a place as an electrician and I grabbed the power point and threw it at the apprentice and said, 'Suck eggs buddy I'm outta here' and then went home and started packing … I was pretty happy," he said.

So where is he going to play?

As they said in the article he changed his game from a midfield role to a HBF. We now have an abundance of running HBF so the competition is going to be tough.

The one thing that may go in his favour is the fact that he can play as a midfielder as well, which gives us the needed versatility with the new sub rule.

Having watched Twomey in the WAFL live a few times over the last few years he could easily line up at half back with the ability to join the midfield rotation if needed.

Being a mature aged rookie he already has the bigger body that would allow him to slot straight into the seniors if needed.

Amazing how many players from swan districts have been drafted over the last few years, something Carlton have taken full advantage with Army, yazz, little jeffy and now Twomey all coming from Bassendean Oval.

If you can get your hands on a copy of last years WAFL grand final it is well worth it. A cracker of a game with some awesome individual performances from both sides including former blue Luke Blackwell.

To be honest, I'm not really expecting much from this years Rookie Draft crop, apart from Curnow. However, I could see Twomey becoming something of a Heath Scotland type of player in that he can play half-back and midfield, uses the ball well and can create opportunities for us. With that said though, unless he shows up and blows people away, I really don't see him getting many games given the depth we have in the midfield and now on the half-back flanks. I wish him all the best though, and if all he becomes is a depth player who spends most of his time in the VFL, I wont be too let down.

Very happy to see him be given an opportunity at AFL level, he was with us at Werribee for a few years but couldn't crack it for a regular senior VFL game as most of the spots were taken up by Western Bulldogs players.

Moved to WA in search of a great opportunities to play regular senior football and played some great football in a premiership side last year that also featured Andrew Krakouer.

He's been a bit overshadowed by how well Curnow had been performing until he got injured, so hopefully an opportunity opens up for him soon.
