Introducing perhaps the most exciting young Auskick footballer running around the AFL system. They say big things come in small packages, and whilst most girls would disagree, this can be said for Ryan Neates. Fast and skillful, expect to see the dimunitive midfielder-cum-forward dominate a wing/HFF near you soon.

(Note both the glorious Mexican Mo, and the comparitive size of Neates and the football.)

In his own words

What type of player are you?
A small hard-working midfielder with a good turn of pace and ability to carry ball. I have the potential to go forward and kick goals, good hands and I work to bring others into the game.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Sam Mitchell. I work hard at stoppages with the ability to clear the ball, good user of football with good footy smarts.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Footy smarts, leadership ability and pace.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Carrying the ball and breaking the lines, kicking to be more accurate and penetrative.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far and why?
My father. We discuss my game and areas that are working well or need improvement, as well as keeping me level-headed.

In the words of others

Hence that general is skilful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skilful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack. Ryan Neates dominates at both attack and defense.
Sun Tzu (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/s/suntzu399627.html)

Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Ryan Neates is certainly one of those last ones.
William Shakespeare (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/w/williamsha101484.html)

A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. It is the small body of Ryan Neates that can alter the history of the Eagles.
Mohandas Gandhi (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/m/mohandasga160841.html)

Power is not alluring to pure minds. Ryan Neates is the exception...he has both power and a pure mind.

What a goal! And what a player. Showed a lot of dip, dive and dodge in his performance tonight, a lot to like. Let the cult status commence.

The 2nd shortest player in the AFL tonight showed why he is one to watch...if you can see him.

There once was a playa named Ryan,
Whose opponent came home all cryin',
Pav said "Mummy, this player,
He'll be quite a stayer"
He kicked a sick goal without tryin'.

Would love to see this guy get a run this year. He and Hams will get 10 high tackle free kicks a game.

Thought I'd steal this from the Broome thread, the commentator loves him so much he's nicknamed him Neatsy! Cult figure already.

Lynch is deciding on which one to eat.

He actually does resemble a T-Rex there somewhat.

Ryan Neates

"Inside midfielder whose clearance work and ability to bring teammates into the game are his strengths. Has a good turn of pace which allows him to carry the footy. Strong performer for WA at NAB AFL U18 Championships. His 2.83sec 20m was second quickest at screenings Australia-wide."

We all saw his dynamic pace against with his goal going at full tilt. You would think he's the 2nd quickest at the club behind Ash Smith?

It's equivalent to when the Green Power Ranger's Dragon combined with the Power Rangers Man to make that Ultimate Machine :thumbsu:

I actually thought of Gnomeo and Juliet, when the red gnome and blue gnome are fighting and the lights come on and they freeze, making a wheelbarrow!:D

A solid outing for Ryan in his second game in WCE colours. Ran hard and pressured the ball carrier all day, continues to put his hand up for a small forward cum wing position early in the season.

Showed his skill and team-orientated nature when, in the first quarter, he deliberately pulled back a shot on goal to fall short in order to crush a deadly Paterson's Curse Spider that was skulking dangerously near the precious legs of Luke Shuey.

Out for around 8 weeks and on the LTI (welcome, Hamsy!) due to a Hurn-ia.

Will only come back stronger and better for this setback.

We love you Ryan!

According to my girlfriend, the Internets, the name Ryan has several meanings in different cultures.

The Gaelic meaning is "Little King". This is how I will now refer to Him.

The Little King is still around a week away from returning to the WAFL.

All hail the imminent return of the Little King!
