In his own words
What type of player are you?
Defend first, attack second. A defender of big or small forwards, I spoil the ball on the lead and then work it out of defence.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Harry O’Brien. Fairly large with good athleticism and an attacking defender.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My pace and closing speed, bringing the ball to the ground, and close man-on-man defence.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
My kicking and handballing skills, and marking in defence.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I don’t have a team, but I like the way Bulldogs run and carry. I also like the way Essendon attack hard when they play against St Kilda.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Jamie Lockyer, my Aquinas coach. He got me to play defence and had faith in me early in my time at Aquinas.

A couple of articles on the young man:

Hawthorn tyro greets big time

"HAWTHORN draftee Angus Litherland could be forgiven for having trouble remembering the names of his teammates and coaches"

Battler Litherland makes his mark

"There were more players, coaches and trainers in Claremont's quarter-time huddle than there were at Angus Litherland's primary school. West Coast and Fremantle have more people working for them than live in the teenager's home town, Ongerup."

He's just going to be a player that needs time to be worked on. We got him a lot later than we expected, in fact there was talk about taking him with our pick 38. (Mitch Hallahan). Won't see him on the park in a while yet though, Schoenmakers still proving himself.

2010 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round selection, No. 55 overall.

Height: 190cm
Weight: 86kg
DOB: 12/10/92
Club: Claremont (WA)
Position: Defender
Guernsey No: 42

Yet to debut for Hawthorn. At Box Hill, he played 3 games for the Development team and 1 Senior game.
Development - Rd 1 V Port Melbourne
Development - Rd 3 v Williamstown
Development - Rd 4 v Coburg tigers
Seniors - Rd 5 v Werribee

Take two, the future starts now

Drafted as a tall defender from Clarement who represented Western Australia at the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Unfortunately, due to a foot inury, Hawthorn supporters only caught a glimpse of his on-field work. The injury kept Angus out from Round 5, and was placed on the LTI list in June. His season never really got going.

The word on Litherland around draft time;

“Quick, hard running defender who rebounds strongly from half back and is equally adept taking opposition talls or smalls. Has risen to all his footballing challenges in the past 12 months from PSA football at Aquinas to Claremont Colts to State 18s. Plays the rebounding defender role, which has become so important at AFL level, extremely well.”

Is athletic, with good speed. Maybe not a gorilla defender, but still shows good body strength in a contest. From the handful of games played at Box Hill the Development team looked to be his level. Just needs to be given some time to develop and get into the pace of the game, and to fulfill his potential as a defender.

Hopefully, 2012 will bring plenty of game time and the opportunity to show his talents.

The next Trent Croad right there. Mark my words! :) Same height, same positions at CHB and perhaps a similar build to a young Croad, Give him another couple of years of development and wait until you see how good this kid will be. He will be just like him just you wait and see. :thumbsu:

Angus had his first hitout for the season against the GWS down in Tasmania. He came on in the second half and played across the half back line. Had a relatively quiet game and 3 disposals. He will be hoping to build on that this week hopefully playing for Box Hill given the return of senior players this week

After playing well for the development side the week before Gus was promoted to the Senior side and did well. Gus had a reasonable good contested game this weekend and hope for further development through the season

here is a link to the article about the Game agasint Collingwood and Gus gets a mention

Angus Litherland was more solid than spectacular, but he is the sort of player Box Hill coach Damian Carroll is after - uncompromising and will do anything to win the footy for his team.

Litherland played again for the Box Hill side. Above is the official description of the game he played. Here is the full description of the game and the other Hawthorn Listed Player's games

Gus had a quiet game against Frankston.

Angus Litherland: Just four touches across half-back for Litherland this week, but he oozed the courage defenders require in the wet.

Gus had a reasonable game this week had a lot of the ball which was hardly surprising given the amount of times it was down in defence. Still was on of our best

Angus Litherland: One of Box Hill’s best. Stood up in the absence of Gilham and Boumann in defence and finished with a game high 28 possessions for the Hawks.

Gus was his usual dependable self this week. Didn't get much of the ball as we dominated possession and won by 13 goals.

Angus Litherland Litherland’s ferocious tackling was a highlight in defence. Didn’t collect as much of the football as last week but still managed 16 possesions.

What are the thoughts on Gus going forward? Assuming he will be coming to the end of the initial 2 year contract from drafting, do you think we will re-sign him?
