Darren Kappler was a dashing, talented, long kicking wingman who gave fine service to four league clubs during a seventeen season, 269 game senior career. He joined South Adelaide from Morphett Vale, and made his SANFL debut in 1982. Over the next five seasons he played a total of 82 league games and was a consistently conspicuous performer in a team that almost invariably struggled. In 1987 he joined another regular under-achiever in Fitzroy, where he played probably the best football of his career, winning a club best and fairest award in 1988, and managing 87 V/AFL games in five seasons.

DARREN KAPPLER

Darren Kappler was a talented wingman who began his AFL career in slashing style after joining Fitzroy from South Adelaide in 1987. He won the Lions’ Best and Fairest award in 1988 - just his second season - and gave the Lions five years of service before moving to Sydney and later Hawthorn. Kappler also represented South Australia in the State of Origin series on two occasions. He played a total of 87 games with the Lions and booted 51 goals from 1987-91.

Peter Sartori and Ashley Matthews traded to Fitzroy for Darren Kappler, as well as draft choices 28 (Cale O'Keefe) and 54 (Leigh Snooks).
Darren Kappler (on-traded), Simon Minton-Connell and draft choice 68 (6th Round) to Sydney for Greg Williams and draft choices 78 (Matthew Dickson) and 109 (Not used)

Darren Kappler was also part of the trade - apparently he was at Princes Park being showed around his new homeground by Shane O'Sullivan when the call came through that Sydney had learned about Kappler to Carlton and insisted on him being part of the trade.

Kappler was a Blue, if only for a few hours.

You spent five seasons at Fitzroy. What are your fondest memories of your time at the Club?

I really enjoyed my time at Fitzroy. We had a great bunch of young blokes who enjoyed some good times on and off the field.

On a personal note, I’ll always remember winning the 1988 Club Best & Fairest. I was only 21 years old at the time and had not long come over from Adelaide. It was definitely a highlight for me and still stands out to this day.
