I never even knew this league existed until we played Toowoomba on the weekend.

Springwood??
Yep. Do you play with the Tigers?
Yep. Do you play with the Tigers?
No, South Toowoomba. Tigers beat us by 3 points in the GF last season. Good bunch of blokes as a rule.:thumbsu:

Do these clubs field reserves?
No unfortunately, not enough numbers. Coolaroo and Tigers have floated the idea of entering a combined side with their excess players to eliminate the bye so perhaps something may come of that.
We had the season launch on Friday night and all clubs are optimistic about their fortunes for the coming season. Tigers will go in as favourites with Cougars, Coolaroo, Souths and Warwick being the main challengers. Wide open competition to be honest and any of the above have legitimate claims.

9 teams, i am suprised by the amount of teams in a rural QLD comp, how are things going, is the comp of a good standard ?.
Is the comp still growing, looking for a tenth team ?, not even Cairns has as many teams.

The top 5 or 6 are close but there is a bit of a drop away after that. Lockyer Valley and Dalby returned to the senior competition last year after a few years off whilst Highfields entered the competion after being around as a juniors only club. Dalby has got the strongest juniors on the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley have had to start the whole club from scratch after the club folded a while back. All three are showing promise and will no doubt get stronger over the coming seasons.
A tenth team would be great but we just don't have the numbers to justify it at this stage, better off consolidating what we have and helping the clubs that are struggling. Footy is in a pretty good place here at the moment.

Thanks for that, would the local footy scene be number 2, 3 or 4 in the local football code pecking order, and how far from Brisbane would you be ?.

We are probably third or fourth in the pecking order as far as media coverage goes, not sure we we sit in regards to player numbers. There are around 600 registered juniors and approximately 230 seniors. Rugby league is the clear number 1 with soccer and rugby union also quite prominent, we are chipping away though.
Toowoomba is about an hour and a half west of Brisbane but we also incorporate clubs from Goondiwindi (2 and a half hours drive from Toowoomba), Warwick, Dalby (both an hours drive) and Lockyer Valley (40 minutes). There is a fair bit of travelling involved but most regions have it worse than us.

Elimination Final this Saturday -
South Toowoomba v University
League Awards night was held on Saturday night following completion of last round of fixtures. Warwick's Brendan Iles won his third straight Holman Medal ahead of joint runners-up Carl Horsfall from Coolaroo and Jeremy Leahy from Goondiwindi. Jason Wright from Warwick took out the John Green Medal for leading goalkicker, Peter Millard from Warwick was named Coach of the Year, James Siokos from Highfields won the Rookie of the Year title while Joe Verney from Goondiwindi was named Best Under 18.
I won nothing but kicked on and had a big one and was in the bad books with my wife next morning. Such is life.
1st Semi-Final Result
South Toowoomba 14-9-93 def by University 19-9-123
University were way too good and clearly deserved their victory. The Cougars were able to open up a handy break that the Bombers were never able to reel in. Souths are now eliminated and can look to next year whilst the Cougars get the week off before facing the loser of next weeks second semi-final between Toowoomba Tigers and the Warwick Redbacks. Tigers are the Minor Premiers and will start as favourites however the Redbacks have been building for a couple of years now and are primed for an assault. Should be a cracker, my tip Tigers by 5 points.
2nd Semi-Final Result
Toowoomba Tigers 5-3-33 def by Warwick Redbacks 10-10-70
In atrocious conditions the Warwick Redbacks booked their place in the Grand Final with a superb display of wet weather football. The Redback's have been building towards a serious tilt at the flag for a couple of years now and their performance yesterday will have them entering the big one as warm favourites regardless of who their opponents are.
Tigers now have a week to regroup and ready themselves for the challenge from University who have been in super form towards the end of the season. Tigers coach, Andrew Farr, has been there and done that and will no doubt have the Tigers boys up and ready to go. The defending premiers will bounce back hard and Uni will have to be at their very best to get over the top of them. The experienced Heath Gneil shapes as the man to lead the Cougars into what will be an extremely fierce contest between two ultra talented sides.
My tip, Tigers by 11 points. In other words put your money on the Cougars.:o

Hey Reardo, where is the Lockyer Valley club based at?
Hey Reardo, where is the Lockyer Valley club based at?
The Lockyer Valley Demons are based in Gatton Billy, this is their second year back in the competition after a 15 year absence. The poor buggers got absolutely smashed by the floods earlier this year and have been doing it tough. They are starting to get some good junior numbers, especially in the lower age-groups so hopefully if they can hang in there they have a bright future. They really struggle to get senior numbers on the field but to their credit they always get a side on the park.
As a reward for the hard work they have done to keep their club up and going their President, Tony Bowers, and his wife Donna have scored a trip to GF week in Melbourne where they will be guests of the AFL at the Brownlow as well as being involved on GF day. Keep your eye out for a feature on the work they have done to be screened during the GF. Nothing but respect for the work they have done.:thumbsu:
Preliminary Final Result
Toowoomba Tigers 9-16-70 def University 10-7-67
Very intense match where both sides threw everything at each other. In the end Tigers finals experience proved decisive, their coach, Andrew Farr, made the moves that counted and showed what a shrewd operator he is. Farry has done a wonderful job with this club instilling a sense of purpose and professionalism that was required to take them from from contenders to premiers in 2010.
The Cougars have showed this season that they are more than capable of beating any side in the competition and will no doubt be there or there-abouts in 2012.
This result sets up a Warwick Redbacks v Toowoomba Tigers GF.
Grand Final Result
Warwick Redbacks 7-7-49 def by Toowoomba Tigers 10-10-70
Toowoomba Tigers secured back to back premierships with a committed team performance where they strangled the life out of their opponents. Tigers defensive pressure and discipline proved decisive as they wore the Redbacks down.
The highlight of the day was a fantastic goal from Tigers stalwart John "Box" Wilson midway through the final quarter which sealed the result. Box missed last year's premiership through injury but more than made up for it this season. Best on Ground was awarded to tireless Tigers on-baller Luke Adams who was fantastic all day.
Season 2011 done and dusted, all clubs are no doubt planning their assault on 2012 as we speak.

Thanks for the update Reardo. I would never have realised they had this many footy teams in the Darling Downs. Seems like the Australian game at least has some presence in the region.

Yellow and brown??? What a shit combination that would be.;)
The Lockyer Valley Demons jumpers are predominantly grey with black as the secondary colour and a splash of red around the logo.

years ago gatton was a spud picking town, as well as the other veges. but spuds were good money to good pickers, and pickers would do the seasons, starting in victoria, on to dorrigo/guyra, stanthorpe and on up to gatton.
the spuddie arrival for the gatton leg of the spud season coincided with the start of the AFL season in the darling downs. many of the spuddies were victorians and gatton always fielded a strong team. in fact they were the domminant side for many years, thanks to the victorian spuddies.
back then they were called the magpies, now they are the deamons. im not sure why their name changed? but i wish they would change their guernseys also..
anyway, spud harvesting became mechanised and the days of the seasonal spud picker were over. thats why the AFL folded in gatton. it is only now, with the combined effects of a huge increase in population, increased popularity of AFL, parents concerned about their children playing against gorrilla sized kids in rugby league, that AFL has made a timely comeback.
the gatton dees will become the domminant club once again before the end of the decade....easy.:D probably in the next 5 years..:thumbsu:
