In the 2nd game of 3 for the night, Hawthorn v Fremantle, the young Hawks beat the home team after narrowly going down to the WCE in the previous game.

Young Tom Schneider was named as one of our best in this win. Not bad for a days work. A goal in the early game and listed in the best in the 2nd.

"Re: Hodge to play for Box Hill

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bailey did a couple of things that I thought showed that he's really ok with his knees and the physicality of the game. At least twice he tackled, or was tackled and went to his knees as he fell forward, taking a lot of weight as he went. Up he got, and on he went.

When he initially came to the bench in the third the group I was with were concerned that something was wrong, as the body language between the bench and the coaches up the stands was as if Bailey had taken himself off the ground unexpected.
But not to be, he iced both knees and sat there with a smile.....even though half the club seemed to make it's way down to the fence to make sure all was OK.
He did take a nice grab in the square and slot it too.

Hodge just went about his business. Did a few nice things in tight that you'd expect of someone of his standing, but otherwise he just went.
Came off in the third and was seen testing his achilles as he waited to go back on.
Had no trouble returning to the field. Doesn't look even close to match fit though.

Lowden looked good today too. Was in the game early, and is pretty agile for a big bloke. Came off at the start of the last, and sat out the game as he was buggered from doing a bit extra.

Schnieder is a player. He's got some good tricks and has time. Needs to build his tank though, as he was cramping again today in the second half.

Nice work Rusty. I saw Schnieder's game against North in Geelong and was super impressed. Gets to the right places and seems to read the play like a pro. Seemed to be everywhere that game and I was surprised he wasn't listed in the best, although I did spend a fair chunk of the afternoon trying to track down a mythical bar in the new stand at Skilled that apparently had cold beer on tap, as opposed to the warm beer on offer from the downstairs beer van, which may have coloured my reading of the game somewhat.

Anyway, I like the kid...play on.

Bio:
Midfielder who overcame his lack of size to star for Vic Metro in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and win the Oakleigh Chargers’ best and fairest. Models his game on Hawk star Sam Mitchell.

Draft history: 2011 Rookie Draft selection (Hawthorn) No. 36.

Height: 177cm
Weight: 75kg
DOB: 30/09/92
Club: Oakleigh Chargers (Vic)

Kevin Sheehan says: Very smart and courageous fall of the ball player with clean hands and neat disposal skills. Smart around goals and very impressive for Vic Metro in the 2010 under-18 championships, winning All-Australian honours. Averaged 22 disposals at 75 per cent efficiency.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
I am a courageous inside midfielder, that has leadership qualities and I am able to kick goals.

Which AFL player do you most resemble and why?
I believe I resemble Daniel Kerr because I am tough, have courage and am an extremely smart footballer.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My strengths as a footballer are my clean hands, ability to win the ball and hit a target, goal sense and my leadership.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I would like to improve on my acceleration and speed and possibly set shots for goal.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I barrack for the North Melbourne Kangaroos and I came to barrack for them because I used to always copy my older cousin and he went for them.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Sam Mitchell has been the biggest influence on my career because he initially couldn’t make it on the AFL list, but he never gave up, and is now one of the best midfielders in the competition.

"Size not all that matters at draft"

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=104310

His fellow undersized midfielder, Tom Schneider, covered the loss of Prestia so well that he won Vic Metro's best-and-fairest award.

"It was a massive honour," says Schneider, who plays for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup.

Schneider (no relation to Adam) is 178cm and slight. He models himself on Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell, who was overlooked in the first draft in which he was eligible and spent the following season playing at VFL club Box Hill.

Schneider missed out on all the physical testing at the draft combine because of osteitis pubis. He's determined to keep pressing to be drafted if clubs overlook him this year.

Tom Schneider has yet to make his debut in the Hawks seniors since being drafted from the Oakleigh Chargers at No. 36 in the 2010 Rookie Draft.

His first real shot came with the Hawks in Round 1 of the NAB Cup against The Eagles and the Dockers, kicking a late goal as the Hawks made a very late run against the more hardened eagles and being named in the Hawk’s best in a win over the Dockers that immediately followed.

He followed this up with an impressive display against the Kangaroos in the NAB Challenge match at Kardinia Park. After the Hawks jumped out of the blocks on a bag of first half goals by Buddy Franklin, the Roos clamped down on the Hawk’s fast moving style and edged their way back into the match. The Hawk’s ultimately over ran over the Roos with Schneider particularly impressive in the last 30 minutes, winning the contested ball at ground level before drifting into the forward line to kick a goal in the last quarter.

A tough, nuggety inside player who isn’t shy on kicking a goal, Tom needs to work on his speed to break into a midfield group who already have a highly accomplished quotient of tough and nuggety inside midfielders.

In the limited opportunities at (almost) senior level, Tom appears to be a natural and efficient footballer, relying on smarts and decent skills to compete against his opponent, rather than outright athletic ability. Whilst opportunities in the midfield may be slim in the short term, Tom, and his natural ability and goals sense, could find himself up forward if the hawks existing mix of forward/midfielders fail to fire.
