Mr Ripper
13th March 2001, 11:31
Date: 27.3.93
Venue: Princes Park
Opponent: Carlton
Time: 1:30 remaining; final quarter

Bruce: "Ball-up, with a minute and a half to go."

Bernie: "Ooh, desperation by Seecamp...real danger there if Kernahan had've taken that mark."

McKenna: "Half-forward for the Blues...the Captain, Steve Kernahan; straight to Seecamp, now Gale...Gale around the corner...Fraser Brown; Ooh, almost a free kick to Armstrong! 'Play on' says the umpire...inside to Armstrong...now it's Morrish...Morrish to half-forward...Broderick...races there...aaaw strong tackle, he tried to beat it...Roos can go...a chip pass..."

Bernie: "Look back in the square!"

McKenna: "Armstrong...look at Lynch on his own...he's found - no it's not, it's Dunstan!"

Bernie: "Dunstan!"

McKenna: "Dunstan has marked! Unbelievable game, this! Dunstan has marked."

Bernie: "He was back there for 15 seconds without a Carlton player getting back to guard him. It was on if Roosy had've actually seen him in the first place. It worked out OK."

Bruce: "Chee, the tackle on McKay was important."

Bernie: "Wasn't it great! Yes, McKay was the player who left...left Dunstan to come charging out."

McKenna: "He had...he had to do it, didn't he."

Bernie: "He had to."

McKenna: "Had to back himself in, the youngster. Dunstan...if he kicks this, they're 6 points in front; if he misses, they're 1 point in front...there's the kick...they're 6 points in front, Fitzroy! Who woulda believed it?! Well, what a comeback by the Roys, 17.16 to Carlton, 17.10...27 seconds left in this match!"

Bernie: "Three goals two to Michael Dunstan, a recruit from Western Australia...and what a comeback; what a comeback by the Lions."

Bruce: "Twenty-seven seconds remaining."

McKenna: "And they've got Lynch in the ruck!"

Bruce: "Fitzroy by a goal...it's been a long time since they were in front. Oh, brilliant, Williams...Dorotich...Zanotti...Kernahan on Matthews...Athorn, brilliantly played...Deiulio; had it taken of him superbly! Seecamp...surely the Lions can hang on now with 10 seconds remaining...Hanna tried to go; Doc Wheildon with him...and what's happening?"

Bernie: "Free kick back here to Fitzroy, Bruce."

Bruce: "Well, that'll be it."

McKenna: "That's it."

Bruce: "It's all over."

Bernie: "It's all over."

Bruce: "Well, you wouldn't have, er, picked this...because...when Heaver kicked his fourth goal, all seemed lost for Fitzroy...and this is the one that the Blues will think got away from them at the start of the year...and for the Lions; what courage <siren sounds> and they've done it! Won it from nowhere! A 7 goal last quarter! Well, alot of people reckon this is the last season they'll be playing in the AFL and they better reckon again after this! They're celebrating!"

That was the Dunstans first game for us. What a game! Always good to come back against Carlton. Does anyone remember Roos giving it to the umpire after the most Dubious 50 you have ever seen? I think the fifty metre penalty put Carlton in front.

This game - the first in season 1993 - was on the Saturday of one of my significant Birthdays.

My wife was expecting about 30 for the function - this trebled on the way back from the ground and a good time was had by all. A few of my friends are 'well known' - as in they're on TV - and it was great to see them trying to cope with 'the general public', well lubricated, on a high and keen to share their euphoria. There were some great double takes , esp. when you're accepting a spliff from ".. oh my god, it's ... I've always liked your program. Tell me, was it true about Jo Pearson and dadadada.."

The price of fame.
