Shannon Hurn extends contract until end of 2014. Very good news.

Round 1 vs North Melbourne - Review

Stats
Disposals: 16
Marks: 5
Tackles: 0
Inside 50: 1
Supercoach: 95

Opponent:
Spent roughly half of his time on Edwards and the other half on Wright. Neither really had much of an impact while Hurn was on them (2 of Edwards goals that I saw were when Hurn was off the ground or manning someone else).

Skills:
Once again Hurn's skills were impeccable. Some of his kicks were beautiful to watch as they were weighted perfectly over 40-50m to hit a player on the lead.

Thoughts:
While he had a good game as defensively he was pretty good and his disposals were top notch I still feel disappointed. From my observation he does not get involved in the play enough. He tends to hang around the centre of the ground near the defensive 50 line. West Coast tends to play down the wings so he does not get used. Furthermore when we run it out of defense he does not run with but rather stays within the defensive 50. I cannot say what the Coaches have asked of him but in my opinion we should be making greater use of his kicking qualities. Whether this is a work ethic issue or fitness issue or a coaching decision I cannot say. I think the stats confirm this - not enough disposals, no tackles and only 1 inside 50. He has a tendency to sit some 20m behind the play. Incidentally, that one inside 50 hit Kennedy on the chest and should have been marked. It wasn't but we got a goal via Shuey anyway.

Rating:
7/10

Needs to get more of the ball. It's the only thing holding him back imo, he really struggles with and I don't think he'll ever be getting 30 touches regularly but 25 would still let him dominate.

He'll never be a big ball winner though as opposition teams know to tag him and not let him loose.

Need to lift Hurn otherwise I won't finish my video of you. Approaching 80 games now in your 6th season. Need to step up in Waters absence.

Can hardly comment on his whole game yesterday, only caught the last 5 minutes due to playing myself, but in the last 5 when the game was up for grabs he was immense! Took a couple of great grabs and kicked well off half back to set up attacks.

Hopefully he can keep this up and translate it into whole games.

Interview with Hurn at recovery:

Good to hear him saying Melbourne weren't really flat but it was our pressure which made it look that way.

Had a good game did Hurn. Showed a bit more intensity and had same great kick outs and switches of play.
