Apparently Johnny Depp is set to play Willy Wonka in Tim Burtons adaptation of Charlie and the Choclate factory.

Depp would be perfect for the role. It should be interesting to see the direction that Burton chooses to take.
Any thoughts on who should play Charlie? Hopefully its not Haley Joel Osment or that silly **** from Phantom menace.
I love the original. Johnny Depp ... hmm.
They should find an unknown for the role of Charlie.

The Star Wars Kid for the role of Charlie.
(and no I'm not talking about that little twirp from Episode One)
The dude who played Mini Me is Austin Powers will be a Oompa-Loompa.
Maybe if the fat kid off Hey Dad has not grown he can play the German Kid.
Bud Tingwell can play Charlie's grandpa.
And for the role of Charlie.........Macually Culkin (or however you spell it) could probably still pull it off.

Bring on 2005. It was my favourite book and movie growing up and I can still recite from memory several of the poems from the book. Johnny Depp would be great as Willy Wonka.

I'm not sure about this.. I loved the book, loved the movie, and I dunno if its a good idea for a remake. No way it can capture the magic of the original movie.
I wish I hadn't of seen this thread. Now I'm going to have the Oompa-Loompa song stuck in my head for the next few days.

Love the book and movie.
I am really interested in Depp and Burton having a go at this one to be honest.
I loved Batman and Edward Scissorhands, but some of Burton's other stuff has disapointed me. I absolutely hated his attempt at "Planet of the Apes" a couple of years ago, but the original is an all time favourite of mine, so maybe I'm just touchy.
Depp's good in most of what he does.
The movie (and book) were both quite sinister at times, so I hope they play off that and maybe make it a bit darker ala American McGee's Alice (the computer game).
Its a great story and there would be a lot to work with.
Maybe if the fat kid off Hey Dad has not grown he can play the German Kid.
No I'm pretty sure he grew up.
Coaches the Dockers these days. ;)

But then somedays it's the "I've got a golden ticket" song.

as a big fan of burton's... i'm very interested in this project...
yes.. planet of the apes wasnt too good...
but i think 'charlie/choc factory' would be ideal...
would love to see burton's take on the classic movie...
(james/giant peach... nightmare before xmas.. type quirkiness)

Hope Manson's old tune 'Dope Hat' makes it onto the soundtrack!
They should get the original Charlie to play the role again.

Exactly. It might be better done technically or with better looking people etc, but you can't beat the history of the original. It's cult stuff that lives without being beaten up. Who is gonna bet this is a flop?

Worst idea since the remaking of Rollberball
Can't possibly be better than the original.

Wouldn't that be Willy W.anka and The Chocolate factory ? :D
BTW,
How does Michael Jackson know when it's bed time ?
When the big hand meets the little hand. :p

What can't they just make up NEW ideas for NEW movies, instead of remaking movies that were perfectly good the first time around??

hmmm...
well.. its originally a novel...
its just another interpretation of that dahl novel....
if they re-wrote that book,
with new chapters/characters..
that would be another story..

*snigger*
I was thinking Michael Jackson would be perfect for the role as Mr Wonka since its an imaginary world (like Neverland) where kids come along and play.

The new film is not going to be a remake, and will differ a fair bit from the first movie. Apparently, this new one is going to follow the book more closely and I read that it's not going to be a musical this time.
Also, this one, like the book is titled "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" while the original movie was called "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"

Dunno why the don't do the next book as a movie, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. With today's special effects they cuold have a lot of fun with that story.
Hmmm, I see the guy who plays Dudley in the adaptions of the Harry Potter books being cast as Augustus Gloop.
Should they cast Patricia Routlege at the start as Charlie's mother?

I'd imagine that the Tim Burton version will turn out quite a bit darker than the original.
Possibly in a similar way to the remade version of Batman starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholsen, as compared to the campy 60's version with Adam West and Caesar Romero in the major roles.
