I'm still keen on a pub crawl around Fitzroy-Clifton Hill to visit all the sites of Fitzroy memorabilia that are still around the shop...
Whose shout is it anyway?

We used to drink after match at the Clifton Hill BEFORE it became some Irish hang out. There were some great old timers there who confessed to smoking dope during the war - they were working on the docks and some guys sent it back from New Guinea. A new angle on the digger legend.
They've all died now and their stories are lost. They were mates of the Baron's - he had the pub in Smith St.
Another great story, OldLion! Tell me, is Clifton Hill now called "Irish Murphy's" or something like that? I know a chick who lives right near there . . .

Well, Phil, it was a sad day when the Markillies closed down. That dive was a great Roys pub, down under Flinders Street. I always stopped in there for take-aways when heading from the city down to Lakeside Oval to watch training. The bloke always made me have a beer there before I left, and refused to charge me.
I had to sneakily leave money there to pay for it.
Not long before it closed, myself and a couple of mates headed down and said goodbye with a fair drinking session, starting at the Great Western Hotel, then the Markillies, and stopping in the Waterside on the way home.
As fitting a tribute as we could procure!

I think that Irish Murphy's used to be called the Gasometer. A mate of mines knew the bloke who owned it who was also a bookie. I think they opted out when some bloke offered them dollars so he could turn it into an Irish pub
Kev oops Mobbenfuhrer Markillies used to be run by peter Mitchell and Dick (he's the rather large barman) that's where the players had their final piss up before going there seperate ways, Peter was a Fitzroy board member and a bloody good guy I drank there for ages never ever paid for a beer, was there drinking when Butch Gale passed away, Peter also has the Bristol in Willy, and is a Director of the Casino, other pubs in Fitzroy area, The Rose has Fitzroy Memorabilia see Dave bloody nice guy ex copper and tribunal member, also The Napier,
The Old Colonial 127 Brunny Street where Fitzroy was formed (not the Rob Roy as Craig Willis suggests)still has the plaque inside, The Standard in Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy, Haskins near Brunny Street Oval, of course the Lord Newry, Provincial "The Barons" last pub. That will last you 1 day and then find someit to do on the Sundy.
