This week's match for the Greater Western Giants is against the Tuggeranong Hawks at Blacktown Olympic Park.
The game starts at 2 PM on Saturday the 16th of April, and is the Giants' first home game of the season, so come along and show your support!
Last week the Giants beat Ainslie by a decent margin, kicking a huge 16 goals. The Hawks had the bye, so it's anyone's guess how they'll come out and perform against the mighty Giants! Hopefully the Giants can record their second win in a row!

Anyone have any idea how Tuggeranong went last season? Ainslie were the premiers last season, were Tuggeranong far behind them?

Tuggeranong were the bottom team last year and have been for many years. They did show some improvement last year and actually have a comparatively good record against the Swans reserves.

The way GWS handled Ainslie, I'd see them notching up a decent win agaisnt Tuggers.
GWS can come to Canberra with dozens of support staff, a team like Tuggers would arrive at Blacktown with only a handful.

So does everyone think the Giants can keep the good form up and beat the Hawks? I'm hoping so..

You realise the games are on the same day and BOP is not exactly close to the SCG

There's two and a half hours between them, good enough.

Another great result to the Giants!
They might be needing a team song sooner than the board had realised!

Well done to Tuggers for making a real match of it, I thought they were going to lose easily.

Sounds like some good signs heading forward, a good learning experience playing in the wet against bigger bodies.

Agree, VW.
Wet weather football is really tough for teams to do well, and often favours the bigger, stronger and more physical team, so full credit for the Giants working hard and pulling off the win!

This was a really solid win after a tight first half.
The Hawks really stuck it to us in the 2nd quarter, with many of their in-and-under players running amok. They had no set full-forward, instead relying on a forward flood to confuse our backline, resulting many times in Hawks players finding themselves wide open, with no Giant within 25m of them.
Strangely, the Hawks went with three spare men in defence in the 3rd quarter, with a monsoon and gale BEHIND them. Our lads started to win the 50-50 balls, going in just that little bit harder than Tuggeranong. Our ruckman Giles won countless hitouts against an opponent who was at least 5 inches shorter than him. Giles has excellent skills below his feet and looks like he will ready go in Round 1 next year.
It was great to see our lads really tested by blokes with men's bodies and experience. Our fitness told eventually, but to see the boys man up, go in very hard and come up trumps is positive for the future. Having Coaches like the Boss, Chocco and Craig Lambert means that the lads will HAVE to be able to get a hard 50-50 ball and then back up for seconds and thirds.
Good to see 420-odd hardy souls at Blacktown Olympic Park (note; our ground will be renamed Blacktown International Sports Park in May 2011).
Curious that the pitch was not covered overnight. Hopefully this will be rectified in the future. Otherwise, the ground held up well considering how much rain fell. The rain will actually help, as the surface looked a bit brown and would have been very hard underfoot if it had been a clear day. Jeez, it's a big ground on the flanks and in the pockets; DEFINITELY a place you have to look to play down the spine as often as possible.
Onto the MCG and the Northern Bullants in the Foxtel Cup on April 30, a massive test for the Club. Go Giants!!!

About 500 attended the opening Ainslie v GWS game.
These are really good figures for local footy in this part of the world.
The NEAFL and participation of GWS already making a bit of a splash.
On the downside, we all saw Ainslie get a bit of a flogging against West Adelaide in the Foxtel Cup. Shows that there is still a massive difference between NEAFL and SANFL.
So what type of league are these guys playing in? Is it the same as the VFL or the AFL in Sydney/Canberra?
So what type of league are these guys playing in? Is it the same as the VFL or the AFL in Sydney/Canberra?
The NEAFL was formed by the merger of the QAFL (Brisbane/Gold Coast/NT league), now the northern conference, and the Canberra AFL comp (+ GWS/Sydney reserves), now the southern conference. So basically a team in either conference plays almost all their games against the other teams in their conference, save for a couple of cross-conference rounds and the grand final, which is between the winner of each conference.
So GWS will play most games against AFL Canberra teams, but will also play two games against each of the Swans, Lions and Suns reserves.
