View Full Version : If I Could Turn Back Time
OK! You are granted the chance to go back in time and spend one day watching the Roys. How about one of those early Premierships? Or the last major flag in 1944? Maybe a game at Brunswick Street oval or that VFL record win over Melbourne in 1979. The choice is yours.
Me; I'm off to 1986 and that Elimination Final. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif See you when I get back.

I am off to Footy Park Round 8 1995, that night we beat the Crows with all those GREAT goals in the last 10 mins or so. It's the only game I can recall that I REALLY wish I'd been able to go to. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nice one Ripper.
I'd go way back to 1922 to watch Fitzroy beat Collingwood in the Grand Final.

1983 Qualifying final - I cried myself to sleepas an 8 year old. Super kicked 5 in the last quarter but we still managed to get robbed. This was definitely the year that should have been. We had the double chance and dropped out in straight sets.

Round 18,1989 and the big comeback against Melbourne.

I'd take that '44 Grand Final. A flag and its at the Junction, our future home ground.

I'd go off to two games in recent years which i enjoyed immensely.
1992 Round 8 when Roosy kicked the winning goal with 11 seconds on the clock!!!
1993 would be the second one against Essendon when we lost by 4 points to the team who were eventual premiers!!

I would go back to the early sixties and try to talk the club into moving to Thomastown ( they were looking to buy my opa's property), but moved to Princes Park as we all know.
If that happened, we still would have had a team with a large supporter base and my opa's land wouldn't have became a Blu Tack factory

Dhurringile, eh? Shep area.
I've been collecting info for a while on dead leagues and clubs. Wonder if you know anything about your area.
Did Dhurringile ever have a team of its own? If so, can you tell me anything about it?
Cheers!

Fitzroy was also contemplating a move to Preston's Cramer Street Ground in a move similiar to St Kilda's relocation to Moorabbin. As St Kilda has proved, this move was very successful. You only need to see how many supporters they have from Bentleigh through to Mordialloc. If only the Roys had made a move to the Northern Suburbs!
Damn you Blu Tack, you've lost a customer!

An opa is either
- the sound made from a badly played brass instrument
- the sound made when stepping on a duck
- a Dutch grandfather

I'll vote for C - a Dutch grandfather.

Opa is also used in some parts of Germany near the Dutch border and near Denmark.

The term opa is used in my family because my oma's dutch originally, regardless of my danish surname.
I have not lived in the dhurringile area for that long but I can tell you that Dhurringile never had a football team but nearby Toolamba did have one a long time ago ( there's a picture of the team at the local pub ).
But I do know a bit about the Panton Hill Football Leauge (1947-1987) and the teams that played for it including some that exsist today including Mernda, Whittlesea, Hurstbridge, Panton Hill and so on.
You can pick my brains about this if you like but, I know of some others who could be of some assitance to you.

Thanks Wayde.
For country leagues, if you're interested in any local history, I suggest you check out http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/timelordsfootyclub ... the bloke who runs it has been collecting info for ages, and knows bloody everything!
