Was it Michael Reeves?

No, before his time.
Good try though. Reeves wore those gridiron pants, because he was a haemophiliac & wanted to protect his legs against internal bleeding.
I don't know why the other player wore pantyhose. Once we have identified him, maybe someone will tell us why.
This question was asked at the same Coodabeens gig, where I won the videos. The person, who answered correctly on that occasion, was actually the player's mother!

I was pretty sure I heard this one not so long ago.
It wasn't "Baron" Ruthven, was it?
Damn it! I heard the answer to this one . . .

You're sort of right, Olmy. It wasn't Baron Ruthven.

You're incredible. David Wall is absolutely correct.
Do you have any idea why he wore them?
I dunno why he wore them but I know that on the odd occasion I have worn panty hose that they are VERY warm on the ol' legs so maybe it was for the cold (that's why I wore them -for the cold).Really.

Maybe he used to get a bit cold up on the forward line.
He started to wear them at training for whatever to kep out the cold and the mud, long time ago, I actually wore them at Williamstown Teddy Whitten hated them, but shit they kept out the cold.

Thanks for clearing that up. His mother seemed a bit embarrassed by the practice.

Just found this thread.
David Wall was my teacher in 1968 and 1969 at Spensley Street Primary School in Clifton Hill.
He only wore the panty hose at training on cold winter nights to keep warm.
He NEVER wore them during a game.

The lady, who answered this question for the Coodabeens, claimed to be his Mum. I had no reason to doubt her, but if I was him, I wouldn't have admitted it to the kids I was teaching. I reckon he would have been damn cold on the Roys' forward line in those days, so who knows? If I ever meet him, I'll ask.

She probably has a poor memory.
The Sun actually had a picture of him wearing them at training. There was a big hoohaa about it but I was old enough to know if he wore them in the game or not.
We use to take the teacher's lunch during morning recess and he would talk to us about lots of things, even TV programs he had seen the night before, such as Mannix, The Prisoner and The Saint!
Mannix was a Carlton supporter
him and Santamaria - both Carlton supporters
