A disappointing loss last week will see a hungry Hawks outfit desperate for a hard fought win against Coburg on Sunday.
With the Easter Weekend upon us, for all those who aren't taking part in religious celebrations or holidaying, what better chance than to take the family to footy in the suburbs?
Who is playing? We'll find out Thursday night when the teams are announced but no doubt there will be a number of Hawthorn listed players taking the field. Join me and the crew on the fence or terrace, just meters from the action.
Happy Easter Hawkers!

How reliable would the Dev Squad line up be?
I only ask because it is interesting to see Mahony named as a follower & Litherland as FF.
Good to see Thomas Kickett named as well, or am I just assuming that?

They always name the bench and extended bench players in the Box Hill team. Hence the 10 interchange players.

Breust.
Box Hill dominated from the onset, and it was only their inaccuracy the lead was not blown out to an even bigger margin.
Like last weeks Box Hill pressure in the forward half was excellent and this week was no different. The only difference was the opposition who tried to be to cute with small kicks out of D50 which cost a lot of turnovers. Tigers offered very little run from defence as opposed to the Hawks who ran more and had many more interchanges.
The main instigator of this in the first half was Puopolo. Pleasing this week was that he put in a full four quarter performance. He does provide a lot or run and speed out of the back half and is tackling is excellent. Along with his spoiling were at times he was able to spoil even the taller forwards. Played up forward in the last quarter and was good there too. He won the medal today but I thought he was second best on ground.
Bruest I thought was best on ground. He kicked four goals, include a couple of spectacular snaps, one which he burst through a pack of half a dozen players and then quickly snapping from 40m out. His pressure in the forward half was first class, as was his second and third efforts. He got good reward for his effort today. Shows his hard to tackle, makes good decisions and puts a lot of pressure with sheperds and tackles himself. Goes in hard.
Sierakowski was also very good today. Seems to be growing going in confidence. Was taking some good marks, but also tackling and pressuring around the ground was good. Released on the wing a few times and his disposal by left foot was probably the best on the ground along with his captain Gibson. Gibson was all class today and was in the top 3.
Cheney was probably on the Tigers most dangerous forward in Carnell. We didn't see much of him as he was keep a close check on his opponent all game. Provided run when needed but was impressed with his ability to curb his opponent with jostling, good positions and good positional awareness. I don't think Carnell touched the ball more than six times in the first half. Then Murphy when on him and Carnell kicked a couple of goals.
Don't know what to make of Murphy. Made some good decisions in reading the play and taking marks, but was beaten in the contest a few times and seems like he was struggling with fitness. I guess the interrupted pre-season is hurting him.
Schoenmakers played up forward and then was moved in defence in second half. Showed he has good athleticism for a tall but his kicking generally let him down. Not so much with technique but more with decision making.
Was very impressed with Schneider today. Is not fast or agile, but he makes up in football smarts. had probably around half dozen rebounds from 50 and the same for inside 50s. Was surprised he managed to get so much of the ball both in the back half but also in the forward half, considering he is barely an athlete. What I noticed mainly is he makes all the right runs and the right times. Very composed player. Just made good decisions all the time. Scored a couple of nice goals.
Lisle kicked three goals today even though he didn't get much into the game. Although when he wasn't taking mark of the year (he jumped nearly a metre over Astbury), he was at least getting the ball to ground. What's pleasing is his kicking for goal. Becoming a reliable set shot; couple that with been the best contested mark at the club and he will probably will get an opportunity soon.
Whitecross was very quiet in the first half. In the second half he worked into the game with some good disposal and kicked a nice goal. But even so won little possession. Was used as forward/winger today.
Last week Minson was BOG against Box Hill and this week again Browne their ruckmen dominated. So I'm not sure if it's because Lowden and Bailey are still not up to scratch or they ran in two very good opponents two weeks in a row.
Lowden shows he has excellent agility for a 207cm ruckmen, getting involved in slick 1-2's is very impressive stuff. Unfortunately he doesn't do it enough. He is definitely an athlete first and Aussie Rules player second. Seems unsure at times where to position himself, unsure at working out the drop the ball - gets caught out a lot. His ruckwork is good when as he wins a fair few tip outs but hardly ever to advantage. He needs a while before he becomes a player.
Bailey on the other hand spent a lot more time on the pine. His ruckwork was pretty and got a few hitouts to advantage but is offering little around the ground. It's a shame because when he tackles or gets the ball he generally does good things. Saw him barely able to run off the ground in the last quarter, almost though he was limping off the ground through injury but it was only just cramp. I feel it might be a while, if ever we get to see a Bailey who can compete at AFL level.
Smith was better this week but it was helped as Hawthorn dominated. His more of a "niche" player. He was involved in more play this week, kicked a couple of great goals on the run from 50, but apart from been an outside running player offers little else. It's a pity because I saw him take a very good mark in defence at one stage and wondered why with his height he does not do that more. He just needs to either work harder, build a tank and make smarter runs as well.
Hallahan was pretty good today. Won a lot of contested balls and helped out around the ground. His disposal is not great but is ability to win contested ball is.
Williams saw little of him. Didn't get much into the game.
Duryea was in the same boat but at least he was providing some good pressure up forward. Found it hard to find the ball.
Of non-Hawthorn listed players I have already mentioned Gisbon who was as usual outstanding. Mirra looks like the best out-and-out defender at the club. Does not get beaten. Hogel and Kiel are very good in and under players. Kiel is the better user of the two but Hogel provides more grunt. Imrpessed with Jackson of half-back. Was very good with disposal and decision making.
Very hard to be negative to today as it was an easy win. Hopefully the boys will gain confidence with this win and start carrying some momentum into the season.

Good stuff roby a few more games like that from bruest and i am sure he will be seen in the side this year
Must say, as today was my first Box Hill game I'd ever seen (given I live in Perth) was a great game to watch. Just a couple of things that caught my eye:
Sneider will be a player. Positions well and generally uses the ball well. Seemed in and around everything.
Schoey looks to be a great athletic forward, looks to have the ability to lead and lead and lead again. Interesting that he played the majority of the game as a forward, given that you would think that his best bet of playing for Hawthorn would be as a defender.
Puopolo was excellent. Provides grunt and gave it his all today. Was interesting to watch in the last quarter, as he was forward and seemed to provide a lot of options. Will definately be putting pressure on the seniors.
Hallahan is a unit. See him as a bit of a cross between Sewell and Mitchell. Definitely one to watch. Would hope to improve on disposal, and he can seem a tad slow, but still think he would be the heir apparent of the next generation of midfielders.
Murphy was an interesting one. Got into mostly the right areas but seemed to shirk the contest at times, and at others disposal let him down.
Browne and Derickx are units. I personally thought our majority of ruckwork with them was fairly good and competitive, but around the ground Max and Lowden were found a bit wanting. Lowden has a massive upside, and I think when Max gets his body right, could be a huge gain for both Box Hill and Hawthorn.
All in all was a great game to watch, sadly it's the only Box Hill home game I get to see whilst I'm here, but I'll be at Werribee oval next week again.

I was at the game and here's a go at a report.
It was tight early on but once BH for some momentum, Coburg were never a chance. Their Richmond players didn't offer much today. Their only positives were the 2 ruckman, Browne and Derickx. BH dominated everything but the ruck but still weren't killed. Their midfield and disposals were far superior to Coburg's. The small forwards were very damaging working as both leading and crumming forwards. Lisle was solid all day creating a contest at worst every time.
Whitecross - Played mainly in the backhalf and didn't seem to do much. Was involved in a few switches to the fat side as well as kicking a lovely snap goal from about 40m. Other than that, didn't seem to do much.
Cheney - Kept the Coburg Captain quiet as a mouse all day. Was hard at it and intimidated the younger, softer Coburg players. Disposal was good and decision making was good.
Williams - Didn't do much from what i saw. A couple of nice kicks and defensive work was passable. Needs to impose himself more if he wants to play AFL.
T.Murphy - Was good but not great. A got beaten a few times but also beat his opponent just as much. Would have been dominant if he didn't try to mark instead of spoiling. Pushing for a Haw. spot.
Schoenmakers - Was out best early on and kicked 2 1st quarter goals. However, he was an also ran after that. Has no physical presence and seems to just cruise around the field. Looks like he could play a lot better but he's still coming back from injury so i'd overlook it for this week.
Puopolo - What can i say about this bloke. Should be in the AFL. Was rarely beaten and couldn't be tackled all day. Played the 4th in the forward line and looked a little lost but his fight and aggression is something the Hawks need. Disposal was good but still looks to handball instead of kick. Won the BOG award and very much deserved it.
Sierakowski - Was outstanding. This guy has a future. Composure was excellent and his in and under work was top stuff. Was dominant around the half forward line intercepting the opposition kicks outside of the defensive 50. Can still get better which is exciting for Hawk supporters.
Bruest - Was superb working at the feet of Lisle and Schoenmakers, kicking 5 goals. Kicked the goal of the game by roving the ball and bursting through 5 Coburg defenders and snapping truely. Looks a strong unit for his size and worked well with J.Hoegal.
Lisle - Quiet early but worked well into the game. Still doesn't look ready for AFL just yet, but look for him later in the yr. Took an absolute screamer in the 4th and kicked truely. His size and stature is quite imposing on opposition defenders and he is slowly working on using that throughout the WHOLE game.
Duryea - Did nothing. Shouldn't be on an AFL list. Needs to be in the BHH 2nds.
Bailey - Him and Lowden are massive units however Bailey didn't impose themselves on the game. Looked too scared or too restricted to jump in ruck contests but his tap work was good. His around the ground stuff was ok but didn't do enough. Still got a way to before he is up to AFL level.
Smith - His pace and agility was on show today. As the game progressed he got more into the action, which included many a run from half back and the center of the ground. Kicked a ripper goal from the 50m on the boundary (wrong side for a lefty) and a running goal from 50m. His pace was well used today and he looked unstoppable when he got up running. Not ready for AFL yet as he needs to show this more often.
Hallahan - This guy is a good old-fashioned footy player. Hard at it and loves the body contact. His in and under work was top shelf today especially early on. One of the main players who set BHH on their way. Drifted out of the game and will need to work on it, but he is a top prospect for the future.
Heogal - Had a good one today working in tandem with Bruest. Played as a crumbing and small leading forward today. Kicked 2 or 3 goals and his pressure and ball skills was something i liked. Could be a smokey in the draft this year.
Kiel - Usual game by Kiel. Tough, hard bodied player who used it to his advantage. Skills were at a solid level although he tried to do too much at times. One of our most consistent today.
Thompson - Was a quiet achiever working around the half-back line. Did his job but didn't do anything to stand out. Because of this its hard to judge his performance.
S.Gibson - Great Captain's performance. Hard at it, smart and led by example. Should be in the best players and his skill level combined with his smarts were at his best today. Was the only other player to get a vote for the BOG Medal.
Mirra - Did some real natural defender stuff in defense today. Showed a lot of courage with his spoil and read the play well quite a few times to help his teammates out. Thought his skill level was quite surprising in a good way today. One for the future.
Lowden - 'Potential' is the key word for him. Showed a lot of good signs today but also showed a lot of things he needs to improve on. Quite a few times he made good position in marking opportunities and got both hands on it cleanly but dropped the mark he should of taken. On the contrary his work around the ground was outstanding, which included going on two memorable bursting runs down the wing like a midfielder.
Cust - This kid 'the 23rd man' is a good looking player. Young with really good skills. Lacks composure but that will come with experience. Rushed a few kicking into and around the 50m when he had more time to steady and deliver better. As a result, could of had a couple more goals to his name.
Jackson - Worked well around goals but needed to do more, although that was hard with Hoegal and Bruest on fire.
Boumann - Slow start but worked well into the game. His opponent got the better of him early but he fought back and finished the day on top. Traditional defender in that he doesn't worry about getting the ball but instead just stops his opponent from getting it. Needs to put on more muscle.
Schnieder - Best player in the 1st. Got BHH going and saw plenty of it. Drifted out of the game. This seems his biggest downfall. Drifts in and out of games. Has good skills and decision making and if he can work on his endurence, he could be the pick up of the Draft for Hawthorn.
Also saw the last 3 Q's of the 2nds' game. Players that stood out were:
Grimley - This kid has great athleticism for his size. I noticed that BHH looked a lot better when he was rucking. When he was rucking BHH looked like a strong side. When he was taking a rest, they looked a bottom side. Didn't get much of it but it was his ruck work that was the key. Pretty good tapper of the ball.
Litherland - For those calling him to be in the Hawthorn side, you might want to see him play before you make that call. He is a long LONG way of AFL at the moment. He is as raw as Sushi. At times dominated his opponent but at times was easily beaten. Can sometimes be caught out not being accountable for his opponent and in the AFL this will be made to look worse.
Wanganeen - He needs to be in the 1st ahead of Duryea. He is lightning around the ground and won about 3-4 holding the ball decisions from chasing down Coburg players from behind. Looks like a very raw Cyril. One weakness is that he drifts in and out the game and doesn't look to have a great tank as he was interchanged more than any other player. One for the future.
Monkhurst - Monkey jr. doesn't have the height of Dad but he's got a ruckman's physical presence in the forward line. Took some great contest marks and marks on the lead and looked the most dangerous player on the ground. Also has the most stunning looking girlfriend i've seen. Went to where he and dad were sitting to get a coffee and she was sitting with him. Went to get up to come get a coffee and as she turned around, my jaw dropped. :p
Thats my report, hope its insightful. Oh and umpires FFS BOUNCE THE BALL STRAIGHT UP, NOT SIDEWAYS.
Well that was fun, a 76 point thrashing. And a game to make you feel optimistic about Hawthorn’s future.
By the last qtr, players were just adding to their highlight tapes. Jordan Lisle was going for mark of the day, it took about three attempts, but he got there. Rose high above the pack for a lovely speccy.
Beautiful sunny conditions for the Seniors. Watching the BH team warm up it stood out how strong bodied they looked, few skinny kids. New draftees, Puopolo, Schneider & Hallahan are already quite solid, while older players like Sierakowski, Duryea, Breust & Jordan Williams have had time to fill out.
And that was how the game panned out; it was like men against boys. An easy win to BH. And players like Breust, Smith, Hoegel all love to kick a goal if given half a chance.
Schoey & Lisle were the twin towers up forward. Schoey provided a contest, but probably could do with some more time at BH.
Breust – goal of the day. Forward pocket, a pack of players on the ground fighting over the ball. Breust goes in with intent, rips the ball away from everyone, dodges a few more then snaps a goal.
Smith – loves a run, loves a goal. Does both very well. Speed in abundance. Skinny, but puts his body in a contest. Getting closer to a promotion.
Puopolo – ‘Poppy’ started in defense, finished in the forward line. Little but power packed. Excellent pressure in the forward line. Provides a giggle as he contests in the air with the big defenders and leaves them sprawling on the ground. Great leap and pace.
Hallahan – has a very strong physical presence. Tackled a player to the ground, who didn’t like the attention and retaliated, giving the free to Hallahan.
Sierakowski seemed to be playing a role to stop the loose ball coming over the zone and stopping those easy goals. Coming along nicely.
Saw some of the Development Squad. BH came out 13 point winners, in a game with plenty of niggle.
Mahony, Langford & Wallace didn’t play. Young Ben Monkhurst kicked three, with two of those at an important part of the game. Is a strong mark, and, mostly, a straight shot at goal. Plenty to work with.
Ben Kennedy seems to be a Mr. fix-it type of player. Spends most time in defence, but shifted up forward to kick a few timely goals in the third. Nice leading type forward. Was moved back later, to help hold onto the lead. Smart player, with plenty of all round skills. Bit of a natural, might run in the family.
Wanganeen - playing round the packs. Kicked one beauty from perfectly reading the crumb right in the goal square. Also displayed his pace with a blistering run down the wing, burnt off his opponent and then ran some more. Shame the forwards couldn’t quite convert.
Litherland – plenty of pace and a beautiful kick, but not quite Strattonesque in body on body defense work. Is better with the ball on the ground than one on one with the ball coming in high. Might be that he doesn’t read the ball so well, and more follows the play.
Sam Menegola was watching from the stands, no brace on his arm, must be close to a return.

Perhaps I was not at the same game as Roby. I agree that Pops was very good today. He won the medal for BOG. He ran hard all day, attacked the ball and was very efficient in using it.
I thought Smith played a ripper of a game today. Ran to good positions, used the ball by hand and foot very very well. He is quicker than Young and kicks it further.
There is a kid who played today that did some fantastic things. He is down on fitness due to an ankle reconstruction but when he gets fit....look out. Hallahan is his name. His ethos is....see footy, get footy. Got the boxers shoulders, a real footballers brain, one step and bang 50 mtrs to a teamate. His hand balls are to be seen, but only if you watch closely, they are quick This kid is a keeper.
Schoe played a good game and was very good early. Good grabs, good position and mostly good execution. He has missed a lot of training and is currently, according to a source at the game today doing a pre season. Another 4-5 more weeks and he will be in the Hawks side, as a CHB. He started forward today. Went back when his fitness gave out.
Murphynot a good game. Doubt if he is really fit and has not overcome the ankle injury. Generally poor when lateral movement was required.
]Lowden played a good game. He had surgery over the early pre season. Did only 20% of the pre season but is fit, happy and healthy. This kid is a footballer. Max was serviceable. He did a few things that showed a football brain but needs a lot more game time to get the timing right. Both he and Luke suffer from a generally undersized mid field. Max and Luke hit the ball to them but they are small and are often knocked out of the way and the work of Max and Luke is undone.
Very good game from Punky. The goal Roby described was a beauty but only 15 - 20 out. Not 40. He led well and his leads were honored, in the main. Yes, he showed more defensive endeavour today.
Schnieder was good early but is not quiet fit enough as yet. Can play footy however. Siera has really come on. Great disposal, and gets to the right places with deceptive efficiency.
Cheney did a good job all day, Williams a few cameo's as too Duryea and Lisle
Litherlandin the early game was serviceable. Wangers did a few flashy things and shows he can play but needs lots of time. He is bloody quick !!
Since you mentioned my name I will reply.
Perhaps I was not at the same game as Roby. I agree that Pops was very good today. He won the medal for BOG. He ran hard all day, attacked the ball and was very efficient in using it.
Most people thought Puopolo was BOG. I preferred Breust's game. Small forward kicks four goals, (someone says five), involved in several other goals, involved in leading the forward pressure, won a lot contested ball and used the ball better than Pup. Forward pressure was why we won the game and he was best up forward. This only made defending easier and therefore Pups and other defenders game were easier.
I thought Smith played a ripper of a game today. Ran to good positions, used the ball by hand and foot very very well. He is quicker than Young and kicks it further. You though he had ripper of game? Many times I was watching Smith, he seemed unsure when to plug a hole, where to lead, or even creating space. You think he kicks it longer than Young, but I saw no kick over 60 meters. So today he did not show he kicks it longer.
Largely agree, there's one.

He started forward today. Went back when his fitness gave out. What do you call "good execution". I said he showed good technique but poor decision making. I can recall four kicks which were turned over. He can certainly kick the ball with good technique but he just doesn't do it well.
Murphynot a good game. Doubt if he is really fit and has not overcome the ankle injury. Generally poor when lateral movement was required. That's two.

But he lacks footy smarts, I've already explained what they were. Agree about Max.
Very good game from Punky. The goal Roby described was a beauty but only 15 - 20 out. Not 40. He led well and his leads were honored, in the main. Yes, he showed more defensive endeavour today.
I was right there on the fence in the second quarter when it happened. 15 meters would suggest he was just 10 meteres from the top of the goal square but I was 5 meters in from the 50m line. The throw in was 20m from where I was. The shot was on a slight angle, about 30 degrees, and he had to run almost 10meters backwards through a pack in order to get a shot out. Would have been at least 35 meters.
Schnieder was good early but is not quiet fit enough as yet. Can play footy however. Siera has really come on. Great disposal, and gets to the right places with deceptive efficiency.
Not fit enough? Ran more than Pup and that is saying something. Was rebounding from defence and then up forward with F50 forays and kicking goals.
Anyway, its good you came down. Nice to see Clarko there. Seemed impressed with Breust.

Only saw the last half but what a glorious day. Compared to previous years it is amazing how many HFC guys are playing.
Pup must have ripped it up in the first because I thought he was just going in the second half.
Sirra was my BOG. Did not put a foot wrong and did some amazingly long running. Another one for the HBF queue, he has a nice boot. He got to a lot of contests and was pretty handy overhead spoiling. Best game I have seen from him.
Another sneaky game from Bruester. He has time with the footy as he has such clean hands. Not ferocious at the contest but reads the loose ball quicker than most. Not sure what he is missing.
Lowden got well on top in the ruck. Some very nice tap work and he was still jumping strongly late into the game. Needs to do more than ruck work both he and Max should be taking more marks. Both get to enough contests but dont mark the footy. Good to see Max cramping up late in the game.
When/if Schneider gets fit he will walk into our team. Just picks the right option every time.
Hallahan showed some Sewell like intensity in close, his second, third, fourth efforts say a fair bit about the way he plays. He is a better kick than Sewell. Looked to be carrying an injury but played through it. Lot to like.
Lisle as FF - dont like it. He can take a hanger but struggles on the lead running head long at the footy.
Bourman looks the most likely of the talls. Lacks 10kgs but shows some dash and he is a tall defender - sign him up now. Send him to a West Coast training facility then draft him.
Williams showed some genuine speed. Does not find the footy much but who knows at least I have seen a small glimmer of hope.

I think that it may be that extra yard of pace. Until Ozzie no longer get's a game (coming soon), I can't see Punky breaking into the ones permanently as we cannot carry 2 not overly quick small forwards.
If he get's a game where he plays well I believe his confidence would grow and he could develop into a pretty handy senior player.

We need pics of her. :D
But seriously i was impressed by Box Hill domination, they played like a unit and looked real impressive at times today.
There were good players all over the ground but the more i see of Smith the more i get excited he has something about him and has a lot to offer for Hawthorn when he breaks into the team.
Special mention to Luke Lowden coming along nicely. :thumbsu:

Good review in HS:
SEPTEMBER is more than four months away, but a winless Box Hill declared yesterday's VFL battle against Coburg a mini-final. And it prevailed.
After a pair of losses the Hawks, led by Hawthorn-listed draftees Isaac Smith and Paul Puopolo, won every quarter on their way to an easy 21.22 (148) to 11.6 (72) victory at Box Hill City Oval.

I thought Puopolo was BOG, and it's great that he's putting pressure on the seniors and must come into consideration. Would like to mention Hallahan and Smith who showed glimpses of their potential. Hallahan is tough and thoroughly enjoys it, will be a fan favourite I think. He wasn't in the best few on the ground, but for a 1st year player without a real pre-season I was impressed with what he showed. Smith played his best game, but is still raw. You can tell he has a lot of talent and some awesome attributes, but just lacks experience. Should also mention Schneider, who played well and looks a natural footballer, needs to get some miles in his legs but could be a steal, he can play.

Before the BOG was presented - the general consenses of our group I was with was Puopolo was our best player.
On the way home - I gave it some thought and agree and feel that Bruest was a close 2nd with Boumann 3rd place - 4th I gave to Hallahan and 5th to Schnieder.
Max is improving each game.:thumbsu:
Smith and Shoey getting good game time.:thumbsu:
BHH's are a much better outfit playing like against like - unfortunately last week they were outmatched by a strong and big Bulldog contingent playing for Willy.
"We meaning Hawthorn and BHH" need a good supply of 195cm plus players - Lowden and Lisle are a great start - they need a good feed - I'm happy to shed some Killos their way:p

RR, I know that going back a year or so Clarko wanted Breust to improve his defensive efforts. I believe this was probably the thing that has kept him back. I'd like to see Breust promoted, I think he's just the sort of player that would be very useful to our side. Not sure how he would sit in the rotations though, and perhaps the player he would be vying for a spot with is Ossie.
Bring on Punky, I say.

Who is our next ruck option if either Renouf or Hale cops an injury.......
Sounds like Lowden is coming along nicely. Is he ready to come into the side for a few games if either of these 2 go down.
Barring injury to Renouf or Hale, is Lowden likely to be in any position to put pressure on Hale for the 2nd ruck spot later in the year. If so, it would be great to see him get a couple of games for Hawthorn late in the year (pending form and ongoing development), just to give him a taste of it and inspire him for a big year next year.

Lowden had groin surgery over the summer. It is normally a 10 week recovery but Hawthorn played ultra cautious and gave him 15 weeks. He did only 20% of the pre season and hence is not football fit, but he is injury free.
Added to this he has had an enormous growing spurt.....he is now 207cm and 98kgs.It seems he has reached his full height now and can start to grow outwards. Best playing weight will be about 105/106kgs. Any heavier and it may restrict his athleticism.
Because of the summer surgery and the growing spurt it is unlikely he will be played in 2011 but is a monty for 2012

Given all that then Lukey is travelling beautifully. I am genuinely excited about this kid. Easily the best young ruck man I have seen at HFC.
Last year we were rucking Lisle and Dowler - we have improved out of sight with out ruck reserves.
Is there any reason why Grimley is playing in the twos?

I made my observations based on what I saw, the cumulative opinions of respected observers around me during the game, comments and opinions from people close to the players.
As to whether Smith boots it longer than Young, watch ém at training. Both lovely kicks of the footy but strange as it may seem, Smith covers Young by quite a few meters. For mine, I would like both in the side.

Wow i'm surprised WX got in best players. Also surprised he got 27 touches. One of the Scott Thompson (Crows) games where through purely watching him and not reading any stats, you be like "Hardly saw him. He'd be lucky to have 10 touches" but then you read the stat sheet and he's had 25+ touches.
Lets not do a media thing here and declare his game to be good because of his 'impressive' stat sheet. Stats don't count for everything. He didn't seem to have a great impact on the game... in a game BHH dominated and had an easy time dominating.

The most obvious reason seems to be that Bailey and Lowden are ahead of Grimley and will benefit more by being in the BHH side as opposed to the Development Squad.
Grimley had 35 hit outs on Sunday. He rucked for most of the game and did a good job.
He has a way to go for sure, but is showing rapid improvement. Timing is a bit off in his leaps, but he can leap over a wheat silo, has great pace, can take a grab (but will be better with more game time) and can kick the ball very well.
Showing improved footy smarts. Has started to develop physically. If he keeps up this development, he will be seen as an inspired selection. Look for him in 2013.

I was just shit stirring N24 given your reputation as a grumpy old man and you took the bait beautifully!! :D
Pup was handy no doubt but not sure that he runs back as hard as he runs forward. He wont get found out against blokes who can't get a game for Richmond, but he will in the ones. Needs to show a little more defensively to add to his give and go style going forward.
I thought Shoey showed he has enought talent to take Stratton's spot when fit. Afeter the bye he should be close.
Punky is the bloke we need under Buddy and Ruffy. He is clever.
Either by the end of this year or the start of next Lowden and Bailey will swap with Suzie and Hale.
Shame they are only BHH players but Gibbo and Bourman are very soild players. Wish Bourman was on the list. Would give us the height and dash Gilham doesn't.
Smith was quiet until he lit up the 3rd quarter (as he should given he is a first rounder). He is battling with Savage for an outside spot and may take it unless Shane keeps improving.
Lisle just not mobile enough for mine.
Whitex was neat yet unobtrusive.

Good timing to kick 5 when your AFL coach has been saying in the press for a couple of weeks that we need a better spread of goal kickers.
He can't be far away at all.
As we had discussed on previous threads, his coach came out and said it on the weekend - something happens when he gets the ball. He will cop a battering at AFL level given there isn't much of him but the sooner he is exposed to it then we challenge his development again - particularly his defensive game as you have mentioned.

Thanks to everyone who provides match reports. Please don't get into arguments about whose is best. We enjoy reading a mix of opinions.
Could those who watch the games regularly give an opinion on whether Sierakowsi and Schneider have the pace, in foot and brain, to handle senior footy? How do you think they'd cope with a game as intense as yesterday's Anzac match?

Come on Hawk Squawk a bit of debate is good and people around these traps handle themselves well.
Haven't seen Schneider live at all but have watched Sierakowski the last 3 years and he is improving really nicely. He is a couple of preseasons off body-wise being a regular at AFL level as he still looks a bit like a school boy footballer but he will develop into a nice rangy type perhaps a bit like Birchall in size but perhaps not quite as solid.
His anticipation is great and his kicking is excellent. Low and hard penetrating kick. Speed is good. He is ok overhead too. Won't be disappointed if we don't see him at AFL level this year as it gives him another development year without getting smashed but expect him to be on the main list next season and a regular.

A problem with bringing in Punky, IMO, is that we already have suckling, Sheils and Savage in the side with only a handfull of games each. Another newby will possobly expose the side.
Of course if any od the 3 s's falls away there is room. I reckon however they are keen to get Milne into the team and he is ahead of Punky in the pecking order.
In trems of succession planning things are looking pretty good. Ozie will not last much longer and both Savage and Punky are able to step into his sopt in the team. Sheils looks to me to be a replacement for Bateman as a hard runner with sone pace.
Milne is a similar size as Birch and can run too.
WhiteX and Hallahan will be good replacements for Mitchell, Lewis, Sewell should any of these fall by the wayside.
Stratton will be back and Schoe will be a player. They will cover Gillham. Murphy is gone I think because he seems injured and not likely to press for senior selection, again IMO. Morton is still there and he is an interesting one to compare with Suckling, whom most people thought should have gone at the end of last season and here he is in the side and playing well. So maybe there is something about Morton the coaches see that the average mug punter does not see.
Renouf is young and there is Lowden coming through. I discount Max as he is, IMO, a week to week proposition only at this stage.

I like Schoey, but I don't quite see what he did that excited some people. He was good early, but faded. I really want him to succeed, but sometimes I think people look at him with rose coloured glasses.
In terms of defenders, I think we MUST draft Boumann.
