He's only captain in the ING cup. He's a world-cup winning one-day captain (under-19 world cup last year), and the Vics are clearly earmarking him as a player of the future. Really, the only other choice would've been Hodge. Elliot gave away the captaincy last year and Berry probably won't play one-dayers.
Berry is officially Captain in the 4-day stuff.
Surprising selection, I don't think he's quite cemented his spot yet.
These are his one day domestic stats:
16 matches
77 runs @ 11, S/R 47 (HS 42)
5 wickets @ 65, econ 5.5
Hardly impressive stuff. I'm still amazed he was in the World Cup short list of 30.
He captained the Australian side in the Under 19 World Cup in early 2002. Where his batting shone, but his bowling wasn't much chop.
The more I think about its a poor decision. I hope Victoria have a shocking season as a result. :D
really exposes the depth in the current vic squad. Full strength squad too.
What happens if Warne plays in an ING game for Vic yet they only only want to use one spinner ?

You're right, they're shocking figures. I reckon he really can play & should prove a good captain in time. His WC shortlisting is for mine, a sign that he WILL be a player for the future.
Time will tell, who else is there after Berry goes anyway?

Play White as a batsman.

He is a promising play and I think its fair to say that he is a better player then his bowling stats suggest. Suprising decision I thought but I hope he bowls well and does a good job.
But:
GO TASMANIA!!

This guy could give the most overrated cricketer ever title a fair tilt.

Nuthin like a bit of pressure on a young kid. Hmmmmmmmm...
They had no real choice, he is about the only one gaurenteed to actually get picked.

What about Brad Hodge?

Plenty?
Vics played 10 matches. 10 each for Hodge and Jewell, 9 for Berry and 8 each for White, Inness and Moss.
Berry is threatened in the one-dayers because they want to develop Crosthwaite.
Jewell and Moss are hardly anymore experienced than White. They all have fewer than 22 matches and are basically 2nd year players.
The choice was basically between Hodge, Inness and White.

What about Ian Harvey i mean he would be an ok captain.

They'd probably want someone who is unlikely to play for the Aussie side this year, which would rule Harvey out.
Hodge is stiff not to get the gig.White could've been his vice-captain.

It's a bit like the Graeme Smith selection for South Africa, clearly looking towards the future. It's about time Victoria started producing more cricketers capable of playing for Australia as opposed to what we've been doing over the last few years, signing rejects from other states in an attempt to win the Pura Cup.

You are a blonk. The man is 20 years old. He has great leadership skills as i play at the same club as him (dandenong). I am also a leg spinner and he gives me some great tips. He has accomlished a lot more than a lot of crickets and he is only 20. I was training with him on wensday night when he was anounced captain. He keept it under raps and went about his work. I'm sure he will make a great captain.
the fact that he is a good bloke and helps you with your leg spin, and kept his selection under wraps has nothing to do with him being overrated.

Harvey is only going to get called up to the one day side if anything, the selectors have shown they would prefer to develop Watson.
They could have made him captain and then used White as a stand in for the games Harvey misses when/if he gets called up. There are many players with better records than White that have struggled under the strain of captaincy.

very suprising to see White get the nod, but shows the obvious excitement people have about him.
I'm not so optismitic about him - I think Beau Casson is a much better spinner, but I do think he is talented. At the moment a better batsmen than bowler.
His selection as captain is quite strange, and could bite Victoria in the ass, because I don't think he has even cemented his spot in the starting line-up yet.
If he doesn't do much in the first half of the season, he'd have to be on the chopping block, and it's very hard to play in a team, where the captaincy keeps changing........
He's got a big responsibility now, and no matter what happens, I think he'll be better for it.

With you on this one Un_law, he should have been vice cap as backup to Harvey.
This would still give him the experience needed but with a lot less pressure.
