Note: this won't be of interest to teenage delta goodrum groupies or most eminem wigger fans.

98.1 Eastern FM, if you like the classy 60's cd "Room Service" you will love this radio station, especially during the day. Has the most original play list of any station in Melbourne, I've hardly ever heard the same song played twice all year. Dean Martin, Engelbert Humperdink, Shirley Bassey sort of sounds, plenty of jazzy funky sort of stuff, also some classical, not everyone's cup of tea I guess but if you like this type of music then this station is worth giving a listen.

Sounds very mellow, I know my sister is into all that kind of stuff so I'll have to let her know. Cheers Deej. :D

I've always felt that the role of radio stations is to introduce to new music.

If you're into ancient music, buy the damn albums.

For example, sometimes I like to listen to country and western, not the new stuff but the older 70's and 80's real c&w. 98.1 has a c&w show a few times a week, no other melbourne station has anything like that.

Saturday Night Country on ABC 774AM 10:30ish til 2.

Best Country program around :)

I think there's also a country program on 97.4, but I only caught the ass end of it on Sunday.

Which is exactly what they are doing!
If the new generation is constantly listening to commercial radio stations that only play new "music", they are never going to hear any of the classics or anything other than mainstream stuff. You can't just expect people to go out and buy albums when they have no idea what they are buying. Radio is there to give you a sample of all the different varieties that are around, so you can develop your tastes and find out what you enjoy, then you go out and buy the albums. It's all about educating people.

Melbourne does indeed have many a radio station. but the commerical ones are just really annoying now! I was in my car one morning...flicking...and I swear, the same song was playing on three different stations at the same time. I was NOT impressed. I keep at least 10 CDs in my for emergencies such as these.

Also the point was made about the point of radio being to introduce us to new music. well that would be fine except has anyone else noticed that at least half of what's being played these days appears to be a remix, or a remix of a remix?? Latest one: Boys of Summer: the punk rock version

Would definately be interested in trying 98.1 - sounds like it is good background music and a change from the rubbish that's being peddled on the mainstream stations these days.

Unfortunately you have to be within a ten kilometre radius or whatever to get it.

My parents have it on occasionally but can't say I listen too closely.

This is the only trouble with local stations... you have to keep pressing the search button to find them.
