View Full Version : Possibly some truth to the Hay rumours
Not sure if this has been brought up before, but McIntosh in his post game interview mentioned Hay, here is the excerpt.
Asked who could or would fill his defensive role, McIntosh said: “Well, that’s up to the club to work out. I missed eight or nine games in the middle of the year, and it was filled by Trent Carroll and Darren Glass.
“I’m not really sure of the club’s plans but I’d probably choose those two out of the players on the list, but it would be nice to get a Jonathan Hay (Hawthorn) back or something like that, so we’ll see what the club does about that.”

Or maybe Ash is just stating the obvious.
It would be nice to a get a Jonathan Hay or something like that.
I just found it interesting how he specifically pointed out Hay.

there is definetaly some truth that he may be heading to West Coast - the club would be mad if the Hawks are considering trading him to relieve salary cap pressure and we didn't go for him......
I also would like to see us make a bit of a go at Ashley McGrath from Brisbane, as they would even further sure up our defence I reckon. I was speaking on the Brissy board to some of their guys, and a few seemed interested in Glass plus picks......but obviousbly that may not be how the club is thinking..

If we traded Glass for another defender it would be stealing from Paul to pay Peter.
We should trade a draft pick and one of our second tier midfielders. If Hawthorn are trading for salary cap reasons they will not take a player of Wirrpunda's quality, because he'd be on just as much if not more than Hay.

yea that is true, but we'd be trading a mid of the road KP backman, for a top of the road talented 20 year old small defender. He is the most talented young defender in the competition IMO - including Johncock. Quite a big rap that one.
BTW, I mentioned trading Read to get McGrath to them, which they were luke warm too than mentioned they Glass.....

That is one school of thought, but they'd look at our top range players who aren't on much money. Guys like Embley and Fletcher wouldn't be on much, as they were still inconsistent, yet talented guys (particularly Embley) when signing they're last contracts.....

Except Johncock plays forward now.
Trading Glass would just be stupid, we're in enough **** with key defenders now without making the problem worse.

true on both counts, but as I said to them, we could only afford to trade Glass if we managed to trade from Hay, and even than it would still be risky business....

I couldnt see us being able to afford to trade Glass even if on the off chance we got Hay.We need more than one key defender to solve the problem.

yea definetaly see we're you coming from, and I find it quite ironic that probably the least skilled player in our strongest 22, is one of the least tradeable players in our club.....

Glass can be as good as Hay IMO. They are both somewhat similar... both good defenders, both not very good when they get the ball and don't have the best decision making. At this stage, Hay is a bit more polished but Glass has shown enough improvement to suggest he will be a top quality FB. What you need is an athletic rebounding CHB.
Glass will be an excellent FB, probably as good as Mcintosh. The only time Glass has been found out is when he plays on a bigger bodied CHF type which will not be his match-up next year... assuming we get Hay.
RE: McGrath. He might be too good for a back pocket and want to play up the ground. We need to get someone that is a born back pocket like David Hart or Roger Hayden. Good skills but will never be used up the ground. Someone like Humm would have been good to see for 5-6 games this year. But lately it looks like Selwood is favoured option.
I heard talk that St Kilda is talking to Cox's management. Maybe a 3-way deal with them to get Hay.

That's a huge call - Glass as good as McIntosh!!!!
Personally, I can't say I have as much confidence in Glass as that. I'd like to say I do though....

Yea that's another good point too, McGrath did kick 6 goals the other week, so he may have decided his days in the backline are over...........who knows.

That's interesting, but is very much a possibility.

Hrmm.
Hay will come with a huge asking price (most likely your first pick and someone like morrison or Cox),a price I wouldnt want freo to pay considering we already have the likes of Hadrill,Polak and McPharlin down back.
Though if I were an eagle supporter I wouldnt think twice about handing over my first pick and cox.
Other than the obvious, that the eagles are in dier need of a key position player. The other reason is frankly I dont rate Cox at all and I think his value is at its highests point.

I don't know if that is a serious point, or just more good ole sabre Eagles trolling :p but Cox is a good footballer - hence the reason we are not taking the decision lightly about letting him go.
I would've thought if any club thought he was a gun, It'd be Freo as he was probably our B.O.G in Round 22.....
Cox is somewhat limited in what he can do around the ground, but does occasionally cause a massive thorn in the opposing teams side, but his ruckwork is generally very good for a good of his age.
He has moer than eough ability to hold down a first ruck post at AFL level, but probably needs another year or two before he can do with a fair degree of success, and needs to add a bit more consistentcy to his "around the ground" game. But there is nothing wrong with his tapwork, and his natural improvement in that area will make him one of the better tap ruckman in the AFL during his time at the top.

Bah, his highest point, even if he has reached it is still better than both Sandilands & Simmonds. Cox would walk into the starting lineup of at least 10 AFL sides.

How about 6 then ;)
Hawthorn (Everitt spends more time injured)
Sydney (Ball is a part-time ruckman)
Kangaroos (Spider's retired)
Carlton (Allen will be gone)
St. Kilda (No-one)
Essendon (Hille isn't up to scratch yet)

Hille has been magnificant this season... really improved heaps.
Everitt (when fit) is one of the best ruckmen in the league. Some of his tap work towards the end of the season (see Sydney v Hawks game) was simply amazing.
Carlton, St. Kilda, Kangaroos and Sydney... yes.

if the leaked allaustralian side is the real deal Cox wouldnt walk into Sydney's team as apparently Goodes is All Australian ruckmen...

I would hope that the club would consider putting Cox up for trade if it meant securing the services of a quality KP back. I'm not saying that I don't rate Cox highly because I do. A team such as Hawthorn would find more value in him than us not only for his skill as a ruckman but for his leadership qualities.
We have a potentialy better option than Cox in Seaby who with his latest growth spurt is now as tall if not taller than Cox and behind him we have Beek, the top 2 young ruckmen in the WAFL. So IMO it would be poor form of WCE not to at least look for a suitable trade that would benifit us in our drive for a flag.

If that's the case then All-Australian selection is a joke. Goodes barely rucked at all this year until Ball got injured late in the season.

Latest news is that Wirrpunda HAS been offered a contract by the Eagles, but he has advised his manager to hold off talks until the end of September.
