Didn't do a heap today but there's something about McInnes that tells me he'll make it one day at AFL level as a defender. He is a rangy type who is deceptively quick and has an excellent frame to stack muscle onto.
McInnes is also pretty composed on the ball and doesn't panic, and seems to have neat enough skills. He looks well-suited to a third tall role, although given the glut of flank/third-tall types on our list currently jousting for spots in the backline, he might not get an opportunity for some time.
Definitely something to work with though.
Thought Hendo moved the best he has all year today. Just kept presenting and looked like he'd regained a yard of pace. Reckon now is the time to bring him back in...
Lucas was pretty awful unfortunately. As was Watson, who appears to have zero defensive smarts. Which is a worry in a defender...

Just wondering about Lucas. I know that this year is all about development for him as we start getting him ready to be our replacement for Scotland but do you think that the club, like Smurph, already have an agree in place with him and are just waiting on the TPP figures to come through from the new media deal before filling in the $$$ and cents.
Also, could he be playing like crap in an attempt to discourage serious interest from GWS?

I hope i am missing sarcasm here, because that's a pretty stupid thought.
Players tanking because they don't want interest from other clubs. Eventually they get sacked, and go for 1/10th of the original offer?
I seriously doubt it

What?
Surely it'd be much easier to just sign the bloody contract? If he's so keen on staying at Carlton, why should any interest from GWS faze him?
From the bits I saw of the game, Henderson looked as good as he's been all year. Work rate was up and he was leading well up the ground. Reckon he'd be very close to a recall and we could do worse than bringing him in next week.

Why would you want to discourage interest from another club? If you want to stay, you stay regardless of the offer from another club. If you want to entertain offers, you play well to enhance the offer.
Unless Lucas wants to stay but fears an offer he can't refuse so would rather not receive an offer at all .... in which case, he's got some real problems.

I think he's about 23-24. He does okay on the VFL level forwards but he would only be big enough for a flank at AFL level IMO. He's a relatively good kick of the footy and has decent speed. He's done some shut down jobs at FB from what I've seen.

Sharks, surely this is the first time you've seen Watson play because that is the dumbest thing I've heard.. He had a real off day today. I've seen him every week he's played this year. The boy will be a star.

As b4f said, why on earth would GWS interest matter? It's not too hard to say 'no' to an offer.

Gotta agree with you, something just looked off with him today.
Every time he gets the ball he uses it magnificently whether it be by hand or that stellar boot of his.
His defensive work has been great most of the time but it was lacking today. He's going to be a great player, that I have no doubts on.

Really? He's excellent offensively but struggles one-on-one and often gets burnt on the lead.
I'm not writing him off, I just think his has a lot to learn about defending.

McLean may finally get his chance with the Blues (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/mclean-may-finally-get-his-chance-with-the-blues-20110514-1enle.html)
Houlihan injured his calf in a practice match in January and then again in March before the start of the season.
''The plan will be to increase his game time the following week [against Werribee] as he builds his game fitness to a level that will have him ready for selection for Carlton in the coming weeks,'' Icke told Carlton's website.
Kreuzer remains a chance to return for the round 11 clash against Melbourne at the MCG on the following Friday night.
''We'll just have to see how he trains during the week and hopefully he plays with us [the Bullants] next weekend,'' Harris said.
''Who knows what the plan is with him with that. I think it's just a matter of playing a game again to see how he goes.
''He's training really well and he's up and about so he's very close to playing and then it will just depend on how he gets through those games and pulls up.'

17/1/86 so 25yo. Had some time at the 'Pies before the 'Ants. Excellent VFL player but probably not quite AFL class. Only 181cm so a flank/pocket would be his only role at AFL level you would think.

Hendo was good and did some really productive things. Twomey was OK, Hopps had a really good second quarter but looks like he's going to take a while to regain fitness and Hampson was good in patches but unless he can hold his marks unfortunately will not make it....
Terrible performance from the Bullants - almost losing to the worst side going around and no urgency.
BTW and it pains me to say this but unless Watson gets some urgency in his play he will also spend all year in the Ants. Can't believe he doesn't have the hunger of some others...his opponent almost won the game in the 3rd quarter single handedly!!! Looks lazy and disinterested and hope there was something not quite right with him otherwise it is a worry!!

Thanks for quenching my curiosity. NB seem to have some star VFL footballers in Saad, Iaccobucci, Gianfagna, McCorkel, Arrowsmith etc.
Saad could go really early in the draft. Class footballer. We probably have too many of the same players, but a team like Brisbane would be in desperate need for a player like him

Great find SC.
Love Henderson's speed, his contesting and his long kick to Hampson who clunked it one out. By my count, Lachie contributed at least four goals to the scoreboard after he blocked for Houlihan's first goal.

I loved Hendo's run and carry for his goal in the second. Just backed himself and took off... nice work.
I reckon that the club might be slating a few names to come into the side around round 12. McLean has had to be brought in early because of the injury to Curnow, but he should be right.
Come round 12, I reckon that we will see Hendo, Lucas, Hoops, Bower and Kreuzer come back into the side. Will be interesting to see how much of an improvement those guys make to the side as soon as they come in.

That sort of goal is why Henderson will play CHF with Waite and Mitchell (long term) playing closer to goal. He's almost as mobile as Kreuzer with his endurance and repeat sprints. Faster and better on the deck than Kennedy who is more a mark and kick type.

I've always wondered about having these walk-up starts getting form and clearing injury in the twos. Our firsts are winning and of course 8 is a given but does it always follow that having these past senior players coming into a winning team immediately makes us better? Stability, cohesion and the current winning formula all have to be taken into consideration. Geelong think they are a better side with Mooney coming back for instance. Just saying...

True. .. Houla wont be given a walk up start and nor should he be. .. Winning form is good form. .. However if he starts stringing great games together in the twos and a spot opens up in the senior side (either through injury, form or necessity) then he will get an opportunity. ..
Someone like Kreuzer is a bit different, he offers a clear step up as a second ruck and unless Setanta or Hammer find huge form Kreuzer will be brought in as soon as he has the fitness. ..
As for Bower, I think it was clear Ratts isn't going to just gift him a game but if he proves his fitness, esp. with White out, then he will be brought in. ..
All 3, in form and fit, would be important to our chances of doing well come the big games and finals due to both their experience and their ability. .. However that is not to say we couldn't win without them. ..

Kennedy is definitely a stay at home CHF, starting from between FF and CHF and leading out towards the 50m line.
Henderson will work his way back up to the wing and then turn around, like he did for the Ants, and run back towards the goals. With Waite and Mitchell (or Casboult) leading out of the goal square, he will be able to either go for the open goal or pass it to one of the tall forwards.

Not what we need. Waite is not a "close to goal" player and nor is Henderson at this stage. Waite is no good body on body with full backs but he's excellent when looking to lead and get kicks 50+ meters from goal and I think he's doing a damn good job of it. No one is close to pushing Waite into another role.
What we need is someone with some height and a bit of size and good hands to play close to goal. We tried Waite and found him more suited to CHF. We tried Hampson and he couldn't hold a mark. We tried Warnock briefly but he's no good body on body. We are trying O'hAilpin and so far he has been the best. He's giving a good contest and he's a really smart leaging forward. Hands are no good but he's managing to find ways to be dangerous and score a few goals and he always brings it to ground plus he ads a bit extra as he creates goals for others and is good on the ground as well as being a good set shot.
I'm hoping Kreuzer will step in at some stage and give us a good marking option close to goal. He's tall, big and has good hands and is usually a good kick. I was always critical of his body work but I think at this stage he should have learnt to use his body, this is something our new coaches have brought to the club.
I expect nothing of Mitchell but if he plays seniors then that is excellent and a very high achievement. I'm hoping that one day he will fill the spot close to goal.
On another note those forwards who are poor body on body or lack a bit of size are getting found out this year. IMO this is one reason St. Kilda are going poorly. Teams are kicking long to their forwards which means contested marking is required which means you need guys with both size and strenght down there. Guys like Riewoldt are useless in this game style as he's no good body on body. If you try and find gaps and hit up leads, which is how Riewoldt scores most of his goals, you will fail as the opposition have become better at flooding the defence if you chose not to move it quickly and go long to the forwards.
Fact is Henderson is going to need to find another 10 or so KGs to play close to goal. Because he is not going to shift Waite from CHF. I think Henderson will get there, his marking will improve with more size that's for sure. There is just no way he will push Waite out from CHF. At this stage if you are a tall forward and unable to get kicks close to goal you haven't got a chace bar Waite getting injured... A shame Casboult got injured!
Claypigeon
18 May 2011, 23:15
Your right about Waite. .. Personally, it's my belief that Waite has always been best suited to a Wing as he is good both defensively and offensively and makes great position. .. However Henderson is more the true CHF type as he has similar attributes to Waite but an all important extra. .. He can kick goals from outside 50m. .. Waite takes a better contested mark though. ..
Waite seems better than Hendo as a deep leading forward and when Hendo finds form I think Waite will fill the FF role unless we have someone else in form and Hendo will take over the CHF role. .. Waite doesn't have to body his opponent, he can get separation and use his superior athleticism to take contested marks
Two KPF players and the occasional resting ruck, gives players like Garlett, Houla, Walker and Betts a chance to get one on one with their own opponents and do the damage. .. while our mids can chip in too. .. While it would be handy, we don't need a true stay at home forward to score. .. Henderson and Waite are good at fulfilling that release role that a guerilla forward can accomplish through other means. ..
We just need in form talls and time for them to produce a structure (ie. remain injury and suspension free). ..
If Waite and Hendo were to function in the same forward line I would play Waite mid 50 and Hendo highish CHF. .. Then Hendo can lead up the wings and create then when he rotates back then Waite can lead up (a little shallower) and occasionally they can lead to the same space and block and support each other. ..
Our forwards just have to work together to create space and options. ..

Sharp has been playing some good football for us so far this year, his work rate and disposal in particular have been really impressive.
This week also marks his 50th game at VFL level since coming to us after time on the West Coast rookie list.
Tighe has been rotating through our work and also spending some time forward kicking some handy goals each week, this was on the back of some sold form at VFL reserves level.
This game could also see the return of Travis Tuck following suspension, strong word I have heard is that he could play but it remains to be seen.

Anyone else surprised that Watson is our heaviest listed player?
Hard to see how he could weigh more than Kreuzer who is 5cm taller and an absolute monster.
(No head jokes, please).
That's pretty big-headed thinking

Hyphen looks set to burst with excitement pre-game. Go Kreuz, half a game at FF today. :thumbsu::thumbsu:
Kruz looking good, good to see him back, been too long.
I am stuck at uni, doing some work, so no TV. Is this game on any radio station ???

Keeping my eye on Houlihan, Kreuzer, White, Henderson & Watson.

Anyone have that link for Coryne? Kreuzer looks like he's coming back from a bye, in everything early.
God the ground is in terrible condition!

Gee Kreuzer is such a gem, all that extra work he does bumping and blocking, great to see him back.
Turnover by the Bullants.
Scores level again
Henderson must be rotating between CHF and CHB.
Werribee 6 points up.
They are kicking with a 2-3 goal breeze.
Houlihan on the ball, and working very hard.

Cracking game being played at AFL standard. Cachia is a bull.
