View Full Version : Only 2 All Australians

So it looks like the leaked copy on the main board is the real deal. Matera in a pocket and Gardiner on the bench. You would think Gardiner is unlucky to be named on the bench while a couple of our other guys are unlucky to be named at all. Still we can't complain but I do find it strange that the entire Fremantle midfield of Pavlich, Bell and Haselby made the team when they are last in clearances. Obviously, the selectors don't think much of Hank Bulger, who should have been named well before his Hawthorn team mate Joel Smith.

That team is a joke if true. So now Freo has an All Australian midfield do they? ***** me why aren't they in the GF.

Embley should be AA. He's had a better year than Pavlich but his hype machine isn't as good.

The two who made it in are the two you'd expect.

Gardiner starting on the bench is a joke.

You are all assuming that the leaked copy is correct though.

There have been people in the media today saying they were leaked this same side by reliable sources. I hope your right but I suspect its the real deal.

I'm basing my opinion on having watched them both all year.
Embley's has had more influential performances.

Pavlich has been very good all year... his 2nd half of the season has been sensational.

Time for a Pav vs Embers Poll Kenny. ;)

P.S. While your at it better dig back up the Hazelby (AA) vs Kerr (nonAA) one. ;)

Bell and Haselby deserve to be named, not sure about Pavlich, Embley could be considered unlucky but there's just too many of those kinds of players in form

If some of you people look at supporters from other teams and think they are biased, you should probably look at yourselves first.

Embley? Great year, but AA? No. Pavlich was better.

Gardiner on the bench? No big deal. It's not like Goodes hasn't had an excellent year too. With Gardiner being injured for a long period, it isn't that bad a decsion. One of them had to be on the bench. You don't put a ruckmen at CHF because he had a better year than a true CHF.

Crawford? Maybe he did have a better year than Smith, but a number of mid-fielders had a better year than Crawford and not many HBF's had a better year than Smith.

Maybe some peopple should go read some of Yze_Magic's posts. Sort of like looking in a mirror.

Embley better than Pav, you are freaking kidding me, right?

Overall, same story as usual, a couple of surprises maybe, ie (Gardiner not number 1 ruck), but every player worthy of a place.

I agree Pavlich deserves his spot this year, thought he was rather fortunate to get FB last year though. I think Haselby is the lucky guy this year. He had a good start and a great finish but there were times he was injured or had flat spots during the year whereas even other midfielders like Scott West, Nick Stevens and Simon Black were extremely consistent.

Only 2 you say ?

Lets face it, "only" 2 players isn't that bad.

In 1992, we only had 1 in Tommy Kemp and won the flag.

It's just an opinion of a few journos/ex players/who ever anyway.

I'm sure its nice for the player and yeah, I guess its good to see one of the boys get a nod but really, it doesn't make you any better of a player if this handful of people (most of whom are disliked by the majority anyway) rate you amoung the best group of players.

The AA team isnt something I rate overly highly, I hold the Players Association awards in much higher regard as they are voted on by the peers of players in question, and lets face it, if you are held in a high regard by the blokes actually running around on the park with you, not the ex-players or journos who never pulled on the boots, you must be going alright.

I think they should really push those awards and make them much more prestigous (Though I'm sure any player that recieves a players association award would be very proud already.)

THAT SAID (back to the team).

Gardy and Fido should get a go.

Fletch and Embley will miss out because injury robbed them of the chance to finish off the season the way they started. Cousins would probably go close but there have been better midfielders than him this year, he started slowly and was pretty much down on what we know is his best Footy ie circa 2001-2002.

But yeah, I guess we should just wait a couple of hours for the ridgy-didge official word.

I couldn't give a monkeys and I doubt the players do either.

I don't watch enough of every team to have an opinion worth sharing.

It also depends on consistency over a season or "on their best form for the season", which would give 2 very different answers. Gardiner's early season form was clearly Best in Comp, but over the year (through no fault of his) it's arguable.

Yep it is a joke, Pavlich was the FB last year and he never plays there.

I much prefer the afl.com.au team, as voted by the fans

B: Wanganeen, Scarlett, C.Johnson
HB: Barry, Pavlich, R.Smith
C: Hayes, Buckley, Akermanis
HF: Hird, Tredrea, Judd
F: Tarrant, Lloyd, Matera
Foll: Gardiner, Voss, Crawford
Interchange: Goodes, R.Harvey, Bell Cousins
Emergencies: Lucas, Ricciuto, Kirk

Nice ;)

Yep me too!

But obviously they werent taking injuries into account ( ie. Voss/Leppitch- both missed quite a bit of footy)

I thought Williams, Haselby, Leppitsch and Smith were all shocking calls. Should have been replaced by Cousins, Crawford, Lucas and Burns. Just my opinion though.

As for next year, if we get better and finish higher which we should, we could have as many as 8 :D

Eight players have earned All-Australian selection for the first time in the 2003 team, announced by the AFL on Tuesday night.

The list of debutants is headed by Sydney midfielder Paul Williams, who broke into league football with Collingwood in 1991 and who has played more than 250 games.

Other first-timers are Williams Swans’ teammate Adam Goodes, Michael Gardiner, Lenny Hayes, Chris Tarrant, Peter Matera, Paul Hasleby and Matthew Scarlett.

And when Paul Gough is not writing for AFL.com.au he goes by the name of Tony Shaw....

Sera, the fact you did not use a question mark is, in this case, telling.

And to you Paul Gough I do this...
