View Full Version : An Offer on the table, what would WCE Supporters think?

Hey, My first post on the WCE board. Congradulations on Kerr's goal of the year, well deserved, also Gardiner and Phillip Matera making All Australian. Cousins would have been close.
Anyway On our beloved Kangaroos Board we have been discussing trades that may occur, and one which has been floating around is Digby Morrells return to WA. Now Freo does have enough tall forwards, but WCE are looking for a Full Forward, and I think Morrell may be your answer.
This is as simple as the offer could be:
Kangaroos Give: Digby Morrell
West Coast give: Draft Pick #27 [2nd Round]
Now I know they will probably throw a couple of fringe players in to make things more complicated, but I was curious, would you be happy if this happened?
I think both parties would be pleased with this; With Morrell playing a bit of AFL for us, though just landed here the wrong place at the wrong time. Saverio Rocca holds down number #1 Full Forward while Hamish McIntosh [If you dont know 200cm 100kg, pick 9 in 2002 Draft] develops into the role. And With Petrie performing at CHF, Motlop and Jones not short either, we cant fit him in!
But WCE are just screaming for a FUll FOrward target, and sorry to say, Haynes is not your answer, either is big Troy Wilson, but Digby Morrell could really offer some big leads and allow Phillip Matera to really play that crumbing forward role instead of the 'Tiny Full Forward' role. And Morrell has had some stand out performances, 5 Goals against Brisbbane round 3, 4 Goals against WB, 3 in 10 minutes.
How would you feel as a supporter for this trade?
I'd probably say no. If we can pick up someone like Staker so late in the draft, I've got faith in our recruiting staff that we would get a quality player at #27.
I don't think Morrell is our answer.
PS - It seems like you are trying to sell us Morrell. Do you actually think we make the deals or something?

hmm I'm pretty luke warm on Morrell so probably no, we are in more need of defenders.
And I'm keeping the table too. ;)

Where are the steak knives?
I think i raised this a while ago, actually- The general response was a hearty '**** no.'
Personally, I've always been a bit of a fan of Digby, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in a WCE guernsey. He'd be a gamble, but one which i think would be worth rolling the dice on. If nothing happens with Hay or Rawlings, and we hang onto our higher picks, trading off a second or third rounder for Digby wouldn't really hurt us.
He could be a lot better player than he is- might benefit from a bit of Worsfold medicine, imo.
But, i'm guessing most eagles fans wouldn't agree.

I think the issue is one of key forward vs key backman. We have several prospective key forwards who we hope will hold down FF and CHF, and there's something to be said for giving them a baptism of fire next season. Key defence on the other hand is not quite so certain - many of the youngsters who do fall in this category also fall in the other, and fit better in the former. The priority IMHO should be an experienced key backman to pair with Glass.
I agree with MrEagle, we already have a queue of young tall forwards looking for a chance so to take a gamble on Morrell would be pointless IMO. We are however after tall backmen, that should be the priority.

Morrell = Sierakowski = Fewster = Spinks = Jackson = Retzlaffable = Dud
7 degrees of separation

Spot on. Mcdougal and Staker and Gaspar can all fill KP up forward. I would like to see us recruit a KP backman, an experienced one to go with Glass. That, with Wirrpunda, Hunter,Kasey Green and Phil Reid should be a good defence. Not spectacular but good enough to do us proud.

Wasn't it Peter Melesso who contracted cancer of the thyroid glands in his first or second year at the Eagles.

I think so. He's the best I could come up with (probably unfair - but the 6 degrees of separation doesn't quite cut it). The first 5 came off the top of my head, but I really had to think hard to get that last one. It's not like there's an abundance of duds who have played for the Eagles.

He took Mark of the Year one year.
Substitute Retzlaff for Melesso and you're laughing.

Mighty impressive Q.
Agree with you on Watters. It was always the "Magnificent 6" in my book. ;)
Incidently I can see Digby fitting into that list a little too easily for mine. Keep him Benno.

Laurie Belotti was not a bad player in my opinion and I thought it was a little harsh on him being delisted.
Watters was a good player for us. I thought his best game was in the 1990 semi against Melbourne (till he did his groin).
It's his immature attitude towards the club when he was not 100% fit to play in the 92 GF that caused his downfall with the Eagles. It's a pity he still holds a grudge and still spits the dummy about it.

The poison dwarf is so bitter on the radio - half the time I just switch to another channel when he comes on whining about the Eagles.

Morrel for pick 27 would be worth considering, but ultimately not a goer IMO.
We don't need to get other clubs off cuts.
If we trade, I feel it will only be for big names......

I often wondered why Belotti was delisted, he sure did have some talent. I still remember when he did the job on Chris Grant. Still have that game on tape actually :D

Wasn't their doubts over his commitment to football ?
I remember something about that back then.
He ain't playing these days is he, working up north or something ?

I think Belotti was like 26 when he was de-listed. Was quite old (by footy standards) when he was first drafted onto the rookie list. Was never going to be AFL standard, imo.
As for Scotty Watters, well, I'll always remember him fondly for the way he helped us snare Drew Banfield. At least he was good for something.

I think Belotti played one season of WAFL for Claremont after being delisted from the Eagles before retiring from football altogether.
Last reports I heard was that he was working up north in Broome.
