View Full Version : All Australian
Congratulations to Leppa and Lappin on their all Australian selection, and special congrats to Vossy on being named all Australian captain.
Still find it very hard to believe that Joel Smith got in ahead of Chris Johnson. The stats are very even, but Johno just comes out on top.

I agree.
Johnno missed a few games this year but he's one of the best backman in the comp.
I thought he would've been an automatic selection.
And why would you put players like James Hird on an interchange bench?? Gardiner on the bench when he's clearly been the best ruckman all season.. Lenny Hayes on the wing?
Lappin's selection kinda shocked me same with Leppa but well done to them on their selection.
Crawford should've been in the team same with Johnno.
I reckon the only Lions players who "really" deserved a spot were Voss (centre), Michael (centre-half-back) and Johnson (back pocket).
Power, Leppitsch and B.Scott would have have been next in line, but as far as I'm concerned, didn't quite have as good a seasons as others in their respective positions.
Lappin, Black and Akermanis were considerably down on their best, over the entire course of the season, apart from showing some good form in patches.

3 out of 3 stockman.
Voss, Johnno and Mal....they were the 3 that deserved All Australian honours.
I think Lappin and Leppa got a run based on performance in previous years, not 2003, which is wrong.
Not sure about Mal.
I didn't think his season was as good as 2001 or 2002 and I think he's been soundly beaten by a few key forwards this year.
Hall, Wilson(WCE) and LLoyd all kicked "bags" on him from memory.
There was a statistical analysis on Foxtel a few weeks ago and I'm pretty sure that he had the MOST (or second most) number of goals kicked on him this season by key forwards on a permanent Fullback.
Anyway, Mal in the AA as CHB?
Don't recall him playing in that position all that frequently this year

Michael had a couple of games where he had a few goals kicked on him, but IMO, that shouldn't rule him out of AA selection. Scarlett would be about the only key defender who played the whole season without having anyone towel him up (from memory).
The vast majority of other games saw him dominate as a defender, in terms of either shutting down his direct opponent, or "generaling" play in defense with his ability apply pressure in all types of contested situations, as well as provide some excellent play making as well.

No, he hasn't. But neither has there particularly been a CHB who has stood out as being exceptional for the entirity of the season.
IMO, Scarlett and Michael were the two stand-out key defenders for the year.
