View Full Version : Trade Teaser

Just quoting from the Herald Sun today on Hawthorn's report card, they had a trade teaser in there, and I was wanting other's to post their thoughts.....

*Nick Holland and Daniel Harford for Travis Johnstone*

"Finances say something, or someone has to give. The grapevine says that Jade Rawlings may be offloaded to ease salary cap pressure, but it’s hard to imagine the Hawks letting him go after his best year.

Nick Holland, at 29, maybe the tall that the Hawks have to, rather than want to, let go. He can still play good football and will continue to present himself, bung shoulders and all, but it may not be at Glenferrie.

What do the Hawks need? An outside running midfielder who can take a few bounces would do. Who can do that? Melbourne's Travis Johnstone.

Throw in Daniel Harford and the Hawks may even save a few dollars."

What do others think?

Melbourne aren't that stupid!

Every one of the trade teasers I have read in the Hun have been an absolute joke.

Didn't Melbourne get rid of Shane Woewodin and Stephen Powell?

That's what I was thinking too, Jacqui. Was wondering why the Herald Sun thought we needed a midfielder, I thought we were doing ok in that area...I was thinking more a key forward, to help Thommo out??

As for Johnstone, he was picked just before Croad back in the 1997 draft, remember?

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum.

I'd like to agree one aspect of the report card in todays Herald Sun. We need a midfielder who has pace vision and most importantly skill. It's my opinion our game plan has floundered at times is because of lack of execution, too many turnovers etc.
That midfielder will be L Hodge, so long as he keeps off the beer and fast food in the off season and comes back for preseason in shape.
If we can get one more midfield type who has exceptional skill and pace i think we can potentially push for a top 4 spot in '04.
As for Johnstone, no thanks.

Yeah due to salary cap problems so how would the high-priced duo of Holland and Harford help their situation?

I'd say becuase the Hawks would pitch in and pay part of their contracts...an idea that's been floated around in the past couple of weeks.

I personally don't think the idea is realistic...another scenario would be to trade to Carlton, who can afford to pay them (more so than Melb), and we may be able to scam a draft pick or a three way trade with another club involved??....

Two out of three ain't bad I suppose.

Hodge isn't quick mate.

Do you think Voss is quick? I do and Hodgy is quicker than Voss. So long as he stays off the KFC & beer this summer, we should see a much improved player for next season.

I would prefer Jhonston to Harford and Holland anyday. We would get far greater value out of the former than the other 2 duds who are just about shot.
However Holland and Harford may be the go for a club like Melbourne they like getting the recycled hacks.

Basically it comes down to - If they have to 'lose' a tall to keep Rawlings, then it'll be Dutchy. I don't particularly like it but that's the way I reckon it'll go.

That was a shocking trade teaser by Jon Anderson.

Harford = dud. Holland I would have taken a couple of years ago, but he is past it.

Johnstone is 23, and about to enter his prime.

In return for Daniel Bell and Chris Heffernan plus salary cap relief.

I'm aware of that. Point is, it shouldn't have gotten to that...

We'll just see how Hawthorn go: Whether they go down the same path and lose good players, or whether we can do better in the same situation and somehow manage to hang on to these guys...

I think you can afford to lose Holland.

He is a talented player, but he is approaching 30 and would be on a pretty big salary.

If I was a Hawk supporter, I would much rather keep Hay and Rawlings. Holland and Harford would eliminate a huge chunk of your salary cap, and wouldn't be huge losses on the field.
