View Full Version : Is Tredrea carrying our forward line?

We all know that Warren is #1 or #2 in `goal assists' (disposals leading to a score) and is in top form. How much of our forward line's functionality comes from his play?

Stuart Dew has been quite coming back from his injury, but as long as he's kicking goals, we don't seem to mind. Is this the way to go? Looking back it seems like he's probably the major beneficiary of some vintage Tredrea play - what do we do when Warren is well held?

Dew, Pickett, Junior, hell even Chad.....they don't really seem to stand up when we're struggling, at all. Am I imagining things, or is this an area Choco needs to address? I know Pagan had a lot of success in accessorising Carey, but Warren isn't Carey.

When Carey was being held or the Roos were getting beaten, Pagan did not hesitate to move Carey to where the action was, and then when the tide turned he would go back to plan A.
Come to think of it Lloyd Hird and Lucas all get moved around as well.
With Tredrea when he is not getting the ball because our midfield is being beaten, he ends up getting heaps of marks on the wing with usually no one to kick it to.
Ends up taking himself out of the game by being in a position where he cannot inflict too much damage.
Again, it is a coaching thing. Lets not blame Tredrea he doesn't get paid to be the tactician.

To answer your question, yes he is our best player, yes he does pretty much carry the forward line, but no he cannot be expected to do it all. No player ever has.

Tredrea is the cornerstone of the offence but he's not the centre of its universe. There is enough individual talent in there that can kick goals independent of Warren and they are usually more than accessories to Tredrea. It's up to them to perform if Warren is held ... and you're right - they didn't (and a couple are serial offenders - altho to be fair to Pickett it was his first off day for a while and his finals rep is sound, and Dewy led our finals goalkicking last year IIRC but is struggling with form and fitness this time round and probably shouldn't be playing) - I don't know what more Mark can do to address that ... not in this finals series anyway.

I wouldn't say he is carrying the forward line, but he is the key to it. Coaches know that Port go to him, and by double teaming him, he has no space to work in, which has stopped him being able to dish off like he was a few weeks back.
They should put him back to Full Forward, where he played a few good games and kicked a few goals a little while ago, and have Cornes play up the ground. They can have 2 on Tredrea in the square if they want, as it will free up the 50 arc for maybe Junior to lead into(he was causing headaches eariler in the year in the role of goto leading forward).
If Cornes is set the CHF task i am sure he will rise to the occasion, as at the moment, he seems to be in the shadows and going unoticed.
Onto plan C, How would tredrea go in the centre??? He is good at using his body to create space and is good at dishing out a quick handpass!

I dont really think he is holding it together. Generally when Tredrea has a poor game (given its only been 1 or 2 games this year) someone else tends to stand up. Pickett has been that player this year. Cornes last year.

Dew is good but im not sure about him anymore. Other than Salopek he would be the weakest player in our squad. Ive never seen someone so well built be so weak before. He has absolutely zero tackling skills....when he goes to lay a bump he ends up bouncing off like a rubber ball and he can never break away from a tackle. As long as hes open then hes fine.

So in answer to the question, no i dont think he carrys the forward line. The main component yes. Brings others into the game yes. Carrys? nope.

All good points. For mine Tredrea is obviously the key man in the forward line but to say he is carrying it is probably overstating it a little. Cornes is the guy that needs to lift, LAde played well against Sydney, but i dont think we can count on him to be what Cornes should be.

What is Cornesy's biggest haul anyways?

Edit: Me fail english, that's unpossible.

If by "carrying" you mean our forward line doesn't operate when Tredrea is shut down, then the answer is no. If you mean does our forward line operate at less than 50% when Tredrea is shut down, then the answer is yes. Teams in all sports over the years have been blessed with a top player, but this blessing sometimes turns out to be a curse when that player is given a bath. If that player is in a key position the shutting down of them may affect players around them, whereas should that player be a midfielder or defender the effect of having them shut down may not be so keenly felt.
