I'm wondering if we have any reason to be concerned with Box Hill's results to date this season.
Pre-Season some media was tipping a Box Hill flag, even after losing Curnow and Pedersen. We've had an ok run with injuries to my knowledge, although it'd be nice to have Pollard and Musto available. Are we missing some older guys like Kenna and Bello?
Is Box Hill losing Bolton as coach a big factor, and Carroll just not as good?
Dropped Hawthorn players rarely seem to step up and dominate, Ladson a recent exception. Guys like Williams and Duryea don't seem to be progressing. Is Box Hill less competitive than they should be due to under-developed Hawks?
Do the regular Box Hill goers have any ideas they don't mind sharing? Are there problems with game-plan/coaching?
Or given the personel available, are we where we should be?

I also am caught for time but I must say Damian Carroll is NOT the problem.
He has a real future in coaching - suggest you come to a BHH game and check him out personally.
It really doesn't matter what Box Hill does, as long as players are given a chance to develop and play in positions which teach them the game.
A number of players have stepped up into the Hawthorn team and performed well.
Surely that means that Box Hill is successful.
Actual scores mean nothing.

That's good to know re Carroll.
I usually get to only 1 or 2 BHH games a year. Believe me, if I could somehow manage more hours in the weekend, Box Hill would be the first thing that filled them.

I don't want to get shot down for this but there are a stack of people and old stalwarts who do care what Box Hill does and follow other AFL teams.

The loss of senior players like Pederson and Curnow have hurt and with the promotion of Shiels, Savage and Suckling into the senior squad the current Box Hill squad lacks experience. At the moment we are just a young, inexperienced squad, i'd expect us to have a better second half of the season adter some of the new players have found their feet.

I think this sums things up pretty well. :thumbsu:

Yes we have lost some experience not only through players moving on but players getting upgraded and a couple who still haven't made it back from injury.

Naah its not the coach we don't lie down. We came from 7 goals down last week. Could have won but for disposal in the front half reminds you of HFC early on really. We have been in most games this year. We do have spirit and don't drop our heads too often. Coach has a lot to do with that instilling self belief.

Changes... Thats seems to be the problem there are a lot of changes from week to week to the side. Its not like last year where even though shiels was getting big numbers in the middle he didn't get promoted a lot of continuity.
In saying that Young i thought was good last week. Its just his ball handling at the moment. He seems to have put his hand into a tin of grease. He also seems to be slipping over a lot.
Ellis also lifted in the second half i thought but no where near the impact of young and he also needs to check his shoes.
To be honest with you smith wasn't setting the world on fire before he got promoted. He was serviceable in games and in some others was hardly sighted went missing for periods.
Murphy didn't play that well either
There are some exciting players coming into the side at the moment. Wanganeen and Schneider especially. Depending on injuries they could almost get a game later in the year as subs who knows. We having seen young Langers and Menegola either.
One last thing i might add and i mentioned this in my report of the game we seemed to experiment last week and it backfired and the roosters got the jump on us. Once we restructures we dominated and should have won the game.
P.S Neglected to mention that Box Hills best player this year has been Cheney who hasn't seen any game time yet

Cool, thanks. So we're going along ok, given the stage the playing stocks are at. That's pretty much what I was hoping to hear.
More opinions welcomed though.

Disappointing we aren't further up but by the same token Damo has been great so far in my opinion. I'd be arguing that the loss of talent at the end of last year plus a few of the Box Hill lads getting senior games this year sees us in our current position.
Rome wasn't built in a day, I believe come business end of the season we can still put up a good fight.
Damo instills self belief and has a long term gameplan. Believe ye all.

Ok, I'll throw another theory out there.
Perhaps Box Hill are getting coached to play the Hawthorn style. Forward press, rolling zone, no-one in the forward line etc. I've seen match reports mention this quite a few times, and on the radio broadcast also. The problem for Box Hill is that it's a tough game-plan to master, especially with a side that has lots of kids and a large changeover from week to week. It requires no weak links and total buy-in.
When it breaks down, even for half a quarter or so, the other team can kick some easy goals. I think we've seen this in Box Hill games several times this year including yesterday.
So perhaps the problem for Box Hill is the Hawthorn approach. Introducing an AFL approach in an environment where it's going to be very difficult to implement it successfully. Good for Hawthorn, in that our reserves are more ready for AFL (and we've seen that this year), less good for Box Hill winning games.
Just a theory.

Stemline has hit the nail on the head.
The Box Hill Hawks are affiliated with Hawthorn and it follows that they are coached to play the Hawthorn style and there is an emphasis on developing the Hawthorn listed players and preparing them to play for Hawthorn in the AFL. This can involve the game plan, team selection, position/roles played and the time played and can impact on the prospects of the Box Hill Hawks winning games.
I rate Damien Carroll very highly as a coach. DC has an excellent knowledge and understanding of football and is a very good communicator. Importantly DC has a first class relationship with the players and this helps with their development and improves their self belief and confidence.
I think the foundations are being built for a very strong showing in the second half of the year. This season we have won 18 of the 28 quarters played therefore all we need to do to turn our season around is improve our consistency over four quarters of football. Four of our five losses this year have been the result of one poor quarter - Port Melbourne lost by 24 points after losing the 4th Qtr 6 goals to 2; Williamstown lost by 11 points, won three quarters but lost 3rd Qtr 6 goals to 1; North Ballarat lost by 19 points losing the 2nd Qtr 6 goals to 1; Northern Bullants lost by 5 points, won three quarters but lost 3rd Qtr 6 goals to 1.
We have shown we can match it with the top three teams Port Melbourne undefeated with 7 wins, Williamstown won 7 games and lost 1, North Ballarat won 6 games and lost 2 and sixth placed Northern Bullants won 4 games and lost 3. I'm sure our next win is just around the corner and we will win enough games to make the finals and by then we will be ready to take on and beat any team.

Having gone to most Box Hill games and loving the informality of the VFL games, there are a lot of Box Hill first supporters who barrack for other AFL clubs, and that shouldn't be totally lost by the Hawthorn fans. I found that out when parking in the carpark by the diehards at the gate, quite some time ago.
My observations are the team is close to a top 4 team without the definitive results. As already posted the floodgates just seem to burst for 1 quarter of football which has unfortunately determined the final result.
I'd be confident of the "floodgate quarter" issues being addressed in the second half of the year. I've heard that DC has the respect of the group, so that's not a problem.
Promising players like Schnieder, Wanganeen and Hallahan will be even better in the second round.

.....
You are on thin ice there 4P.
You go back last two years and we had very few HFC players available. This year we have heaps so if there is a problem it is a HFC one.
Lack of big bodies does not help. Suburban grounds are heavier than AFL ones. Most AFL guys are trained to run on top of the ground.
BHH play the rolling flood. Like the HFC we are still bedding it in.
Only off my own observations, VFL guys dump the flood earlier than the AFL - due to running out of legs. Once this positional game starts we are undersized so can be exposed one on one.
