Saw on the news last night that there were still 6 Dockers and 10 Eagles who haven't re-signed yet.

I only got a quick glimpse of the Eagles list and the first 3 names were

Matera
Sampi
Wirrpunda

Did anyone see the whole list?

Why hasn't Wirrpunda signed?

Thats what I want to know. Something tells me that there is more to this than meets the eye. MDB, have you heard anything?

There's no hurry just yet, lets see what cards are layed out on the trading table first.
Plenty of options still available before we need to worry about them putting pen to paper.

I know for a fact that Wirra is building a new house at the moment. Not that it in itself means that he wouldn't move, but at least it indicates he's thinking of hanging around for a little while.

I'm pretty sure All the 2001 draftees are out of contract. Judd has been re-signed which means Sampi, Seaby and Hansen would also be out of contract. I know Haynes is also out of contract. Thats all I can think of at the moment...

Only one Im really worried about is Wirrpunda. You would expect Haynes, Matera, Sampi, Green etc to re-sign.

Wirrpunda is the biggie. Can't see Sampi or Fido moving over east.

Haynes was put on a 1 year contract last year and will be uncontracted from the 30th September - although he had a great first half of the season I wouldn't be suprised if the club considers him as trade bait if the right deal can be stitched up.

It was rumoured that we would swap Haynes for Cameron Mooney.

I remember mid way through the year, someone from the Eagles said we had a very low number of players coming out of contract at the end of this year - 11 or 12 it was, so I doubt we still have 10 guys yet to sign...........unless we've only signed Judd and Cuz??

Trade Fido.

I never thought od it as a possibility but top small forwards do tend to get traded eg Ronnie Burns, Jeff Farmer.
And there may be a trend to play without specialist small forwards eg Brisbane, Bombers

Just a thought

If we swapped Haynes I'd rather it be for a draft pick.

As for Fido, don't think we'd ever trade him. The Matera name is part of our club, and he's been just to damn good for us over the years.

What do these two words mean to you when talking about contracted players: Trent Croad...

So would you trade Kerr for Lloyd and Hird?

Every player is tradeable if the right deal is offered.

2 Down 7 to go. :D

"The West Coast Eagles have re-signed young defender Darren Glass and unheralded half-forward Rowan Jones."

"The Eagles still have a host of players out of contract, including Phil Matera, Jeremy Humm, David Wirrpunda, Ashley Sampi, Adam Hunter, David Haynes, Kane Munro and Callum Chambers."

Club chief executive Trevor Nisbett was confident all would be re-signed before the club champion awards early next month.

Mid-fielders like Fletcher are dime-a-dozen. Small forwards who can kick 50+ goals a season aren't.

Once again you prove that you are a fool.

On 10 tonight, Gossage was suggesting that Wirrpunda was offered a contract that was a lot less than he was asking for. For the clubs sake I hope we don't lose him.

dreamin buddy! hirds too old and lloyds a ****!

as for fido, why would you trade the best small forward in the game when one of our major problems in the 2nd half of the year was a lack of goals, where is the logic in that?

i also think you're dreaming if you reckon we'd accept ANY offers on cuz, gardi or judd (while judd wants to stay)...

josh wooden for lloyd i mite consider....

Does this mean Carrol has a contract for next year?

Don't be surprised if Wirrpunda is offered up as trade bait.... he is injury prone.... he is only 24... but has been in the AFL for 8 years.. and he even said himself he feels like has the body of a 30 year old.... so he may only have 3 or 4 years left in him. As he is now the Eagles could easily get a top 10 pick for him.... and pick up someone like Kepler Bradley.... I would easily swap Wirrpunda for Kepler Bradley.

Well, I guess it all depends: are we trying to win a premiership in the next few years or are we trying to rebuild? If we are rebuilding, then sure, go for it, but if we are trying to win a premiership then we will need Wirra.

I honestly don't think Bradley is going to be the next best thing since sliced bread. He is too skinny and to beef him up we would need to put him on steroids and feed him a cow a week. Could end up being like Munro, heaps of talent but won't have the physical attributes to make it.

Wirra is one of those guys, like Cox, McDougall, Glass and Gaspar who are going to have very very interesting 2004 seasons.

iirc, Wirrpunda has never got through a full preseason in his career- but that was because he was waiting on the foot operation which he couldn't have done until this year. His lack of fitness limits his ability to play up the ground, and makes it a virtual certainty that sooner or later he'll do a hammy.

At his peak fitness level, he's brownlow-esque. Anyone remember those first few years after he burst onto the scene? Now, there's nothing to suggest that he won't do the full preseason this time around yeah? I'd like to see what effect that has on him before we trade him- barring any more calamities, he should go into 2004 fitter and better prepared than he has ever been before in his career- its worth seeing what sort of year he can put together when fit before we gift wrap him, I'd say.
